Journalist Sam Husseini was dragged out of the State Department briefing room by security personnel during a briefing led by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Blinken was delivering remarks about the ceasefire deal that was reached in Gaza and was interrupted multiple times by reporters, including Husseini, demanding he respond to their questions regarding US support to Israel and Israel’s military policies.
Videos of the dramatic scene wherein Husseini, sitting quietly, is manhandled and dragged out of the room have circulated widely, even on cable news station CNN. According to Husseini himself, before security grabbed him, he had asked Blinken about the Hannibal Directive, a controversial Israeli military policy which aims to prevent the capture of Israeli soldiers “by all means”, including by killing their own people.

🇨🇩#PeopleHistory | Today, on the anniversary of his brutal assassination, we remember the Congolese Pan-Africanist and African Liberation Fighter Patrice Lumumba.

Lumumba was a leader of the Congolese struggle for independence and the newly liberated country’s first prime minister. Within ten weeks of being elected, Lumumba’s government was deposed in a coup and he was imprisoned. From prison Lumumba wrote a letter to his wife Pauline. He said, “The day will come when history will speak. But it will not be the history which will be taught in Brussels, Paris, Washington or the United Nations. It will be the history which will be taught in the countries which have won freedom from colonialism and its puppets. Africa will write its own history and in both north and south it will be a history of glory and dignity.”

His brutal assassination on January 17, 1961 was carried out in collusion with the CIA, Belgium, France, and England.

As Pan Africanism Today wrote, “On this day, January 17, let us remember Patrice Lumumba's unwavering dedication to the struggle for the Congo's political and economic independence. His vision of a united, free, and prosperous Africa remains an inspiration to all people struggling against the shackles of imperialism and colonialism - from the Congo to Palestine and beyond.”
