Workers in France took to the streets, demanding improved rights and greater investment in public services, as newly appointed PM Michel Barnier delivered his first address to the National Assembly.

On Tuesday, October 1, two different realities unfolded in France. Thousands of people, led by trade unions including the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and Solidaires, took to the streets demanding the repeal of President Emmanuel Macron’s controversial pension reform, salary increases, and broader improvements to their living standards. Meanwhile, newly appointed Prime Minister Michel Barnier delivered his inaugural speech in the National Assembly, laying out a vision for his mandate that was, essentially, everything but what the workers are rallying for.

A year ago, Delhi police carried out a massive repressive operation against the progressive Indian news outlet NewsClick and raided the homes and offices of over more than 70 people associated with the site. Over 500 police and intelligence officers participated in the operation.

NewsClick editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha was arrested and charged under the draconian anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and investigated for allegedly being part of a Chinese propaganda machine. The attacks against NewsClick came in response to an article in the New York Times that sparked a political and media scandal inside India.

Purkayastha spent over six months in jail and was released under bail on May 15, 2024.

As Israel broadens its invasion, health systems in both Gaza and Lebanon are under attack, facing mounting threats and destruction.

Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s civil and health infrastructure continues to shock humanitarian workers who manage to enter the enclave during their missions.
