#PeoplesHistory | Today, we remember the Chilean poet, Communist Party member, and Senator of the Chilean Republic, Pablo Neruda.
Neruda died on a day like today in 1973, 12 days after the US-backed coup against socialist president Salvador Allende. For years, the official reason of his death was that Neruda died due to cancer complications.
However, many say that his death was not natural and that the military coup government killed him. In 2024, the investigations into his death were reopened and investigators are looking into the theory that Neruda was murdered by the Pinochet dictatorship because of his support of Allende's transformation of Chile.

At 6 pm today, the State of Missouri is set to execute Williams for a crime that he did not commit.
Marcellus Williams has maintained his innocence since the murder of Felicia Gayle in 1998. He was convicted of this crime without evidence, with the case against him resting upon two unreliable witnesses. Recently, DNA testing has confirmed that Williams’ DNA was nowhere to be found at the crime scene.
Yet despite the evidence, and despite the fact that Gayle’s family opposes the execution, Missouri Governor Mike Parson has denied clemency to Williams.
With all legal avenues exhausted in the state of Missouri, Williams and his legal team are hoping for a last-minute intervention by the United States Supreme Court.

International health and sanitation networks are growing increasingly alarmed about the public health risks posed by potential floods in the Gaza Strip in the coming months.
Without an immediate ceasefire and reconstruction, floods will almost certainly lead to the spread of waterborne and vector-borne diseases, as well as an increased risk of snakebites and worsening mental health conditions, the network warned.
