#PeoplesHistory | Today, 100 years ago, the revolutionary anti-colonial leader Amilcar Cabral was born in Guinea-Bissau.

Cabral was an agricultural engineer, organizer, and political leader who fought against Portuguese colonial rule in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. He became one of the most essential Pan-Africanist thinkers and anti-colonial revolutionaries in history.

Cabral, forced into exile by Portuguese colonial powers, helped create the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and later on would go to create the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).

Cabral was assassinated on January 20, 1973 before Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde won their independence in a plot backed and supported by the Portuguese.

His contributions to National Liberation Marxism continue to inform movements and inspire millions today.

An infamous “Red Scare” case is being re-litigated in the public after the release of a newly declassified document from August 22, 1950 that reveals that the United States government knew that Ethel Rosenberg was not a spy long before her trial.

Ethel and her husband Julius Rosenberg were executed by electric chair in 1953 after being convicted for spying for the Soviet Union during the height of the Red Scare.

#PeopleHistory | Today, on the anniversary of his assassination, we remember the South African anti-apartheid activist and Black revolutionary Steve Biko.

Biko was a socialist and freedom fighter who fiercely opposed the South African apartheid regime. He led the Black Consciousness Movement, popularized the now-famous slogan "Black is beautiful," and took an essential role in the Soweto uprising, where over 20,000 high school students took to the streets and were violently repressed by the Apartheid repression forces.

In 1977, Biko was tortured and killed by the Apartheid South African police at age 30, a murder that was “the spark that lit a veld fire across South Africa,” as Mandela said.

Israel continues to provoke regional war despite Iran’s and Hezbollah’s long-awaited retaliation to the assassination of top regional resistance leaders Haniyeh and Shukr.

Israeli media sources published unconfirmed reports on Thursday, September 12 that Israeli special forces carried out a raid on a weapons facility run by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Masyaf area, in the Syrian central governorate of Hama earlier this week

Refuting Israeli media reports about the attack, Iran’s state-run Tasnim News Agency quoted a source on Wednesday, September 12, saying, “Basically, no Iranian force has been present in Syria in that claimed location [Masyaf], while that region was the location of presence of the Syrian Army. Therefore, the subsequent claim, namely harm to Iranian forces or them being captured, is a complete lie.”

#PeoplesHistory | Today, on his death anniversary, we remember Tupac Shakur. The rapper and son of a Black Panther understood perfectly how war is an inherent part of the capitalist system.

As said by Vladimir Lenin: “Imperialist wars are absolutely inevitable under such an economic system, as long as private property in the means of production exists.”

The dictator’s legacy is celebrated by some and condemned by others. What is certain is that Fujimorism will continue to be a relevant actor in Peruvian politics for years to come.

His legacy is harshly criticized by political actors on the right, center, and left, as well as by many human rights organizations that see in his government a model of political management based on authoritarianism, repression, and the radicalization of a neoliberal economic model that still maintains Peru as one of the most unequal countries in the world.

Thousands of workers took to the streets of Brussels to protest the planned closure of an Audi production site, highlighting broader concerns over the EU’s failed industrial strategy.

Volkswagen, Audi’s parent company, recently announced plans to scale down operations in Europe. This includes backing out of existing social contracts, which undermines job security across the automotive sector. Despite the intention to reduce the number of jobs and employment security, Volkswagen paid out record dividends in 2023—totaling 12 billion euros—according to a statement by the Workers Party of Belgium (PTB-PVDA).
