#PeoplesHistory | Today, we honor Brazilian legend Sócrates Brasileiro, the radical doctor footballer who leveraged his fame to fight oppression.

On the field, Sócrates was one of Brazil's all-time greats. Off it, he fearlessly stood up to Brazil's brutal US-backed military dictatorship. At great personal risk, he used his platform to advocate for democracy, workers' rights and social justice for the poor.

Sócrates showed how sports and politics are inextricably linked. His courage made him an icon of the resistance. Though gone, his defiant legacy lives on.

Palestinian women and girls in Israeli detention have reportedly been subject to sexual violence by Israeli soldiers, according to a statement from a group of United Nations experts.

“We are particularly distressed by reports that Palestinian women and girls in detention have also been subjected to multiple forms of sexual assault, such as being stripped naked and searched by male Israeli army officers. At least two female Palestinian detainees were reportedly raped while others were reportedly threatened with rape and sexual violence,” the experts said in a February 19 press release.

Julian Assange's legal team is presenting its final appeal in British courts against the extradition of the Wikileaks founder.

If extradited, #Assange would face a 175-year sentence under the Espionage Act; it would be the first time a journalist is prosecuted under it.

Julian Assange's fate hangs in the balance. His legal team is making a final appeal to UK courts against his extradition to the US, where he could face 175 years in prison.

Prosecuting Assange under the Espionage Act would set a dangerous precedent - no journalist has ever been convicted under this law. His extradition risks criminalizing journalism that exposes government secrets in the public interest.

Advocates across the globe continue to urge UK authorities to block his extradition and for the US DOJ to drop the politically motivated charges. Assange helped uncover war crimes and corruption through WikiLeaks publications. He should be thanked, not imprisoned.

Stand up for press freedom. Call on the UK to #FreeAssangeNOW.
