On January 12, students from across India gathered at the heart of the capital city New Delhi to protest against the conservative policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The students say that the policies being implemented by the government, particularly the new education policy will lead to the destruction of the country's public education system. It will limit access to education, particularly to the poor and marginalized sections of India. The students are also against the changing foreign policy of India wherein it is positioning itself close to Israel and abandoning its independent position. Watch the report to listen to what India's students have to say.

The second day of the hearing on South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza took place at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on January 12. Over the course of three hours, Israel presented its response to the arguments made by Pretoria’s legal team the day prior.

Friday’s hearings were held on the 98th day of Israel’s relentless bombardment of besieged Gaza. In the 24 hour period between the hearings at the ICJ, Israel had killed approximately 151 Palestinians. The death toll since October now stands at over 23,700, with 60,000 people wounded, as per latest figures released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health on Friday.

🇵🇸 Triage is the term that most accurately summarizes what is happening to health services in Gaza. Every hour, health workers have to determine who among the dozens of patients lying on the hospital floors should be treated first.

Doctors and nurses also have to decide who gets paracetamol or ibuprofen for procedures that would usually be performed while patients are under anesthesia, and who goes without even that.

There is also a third form of triage going on in the proximity of Gaza these days, and that one falls upon the people trying to get supplies into the Strip. Despite reassurances that they would allow aid to be distributed more easily, Israeli authorities are still obstructing deliveries.

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States, a federal holiday commemorating Dr. King's birthday.

As the most influential leader of the 1960s civil rights movement, Dr. King advocated for racial equality and economic justice for all Americans. He spoke out passionately against poverty, discrimination, and the Vietnam War.

Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 at the age of 39. His example of grassroots anti-racist, anti-capitalist, and anti-imperialist struggle continues to inspire new generations.

As we reflect on his legacy, let's not allow mainstream and corporate media to erase Dr. King's vision of justice, dignity, and opportunity for all people.

🇨🇾 Anti-imperialist groups in Cyprus protested outside the UK bases in Akrotiri, against the use of bases on the island in the imperialist wars raging in the region.

The Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus won independence from the British in 1960. However, Britain retained the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia and some other military installations.

At this rate, while it could only take a decade for the world to have its first trillionaire, it will take 229 years to ensure that no person is living in poverty.

#PeoplesHistory | On this day in 1961, Congolese revolutionary and independence leader, Patrice Lumumba was assassinated by counter-revolutionary forces, backed by the US and Belgium.

Lumumba was the first Prime Minister of the independent Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Republic of the Congo). He played a significant role in the struggle against colonialism and for the economic and political independence of his nation.

Lumumba was an African nationalist and Pan-Africanist, he led the Congolese National Movement (MNC) party from 1958 until his assassination. With Lumumba’s assassination, neocolonial forces won an important victory in the mineral-rich country, who facilitated the pillaging of the country’s natural resources and labor power by transnational corporations, as well as the brutal repression of all opposition, dynamics that the Congolese people are still resisting, in an effort to build true sovereignty and democracy.
