The year is coming to an end. While imperialist war-mongerers have been trying their best to make 2023 a lousy year, the people, the workers, and the unions have continued fighting and scored some important victories.

Here is our recap of some of those moments to celebrate!

Since October 7, Biden has added to Israel’s massive US-made military arsenal and sent more weapons to Israel as it carries out its genocide in the Gaza Strip, even bypassing Congressional review to do so. After nearly three months of war, however, support for the US’s usual policy of unconditional aid to the Zionist state is dwindling.

Some of the most bloody attacks against Palestinian civilians have been made possible with US-made bombs, such as the attack that leveled an apartment block in the Jabalya refugee camp, killing over 100 people.

🇿🇦 South Africa has launched a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for crimes of genocide against Palestinian people in Gaza.

“The acts and omissions by Israel…are genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial, and ethnic group,” the 84-page-long application states.

Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, is one of the hospitals in Palestine to be most recently attacked by the Israeli Occupying Forces (IOF).

The attacks also hit floors hosting the headquarters of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), resulting in damage to the dispatch system used by the PRCS to coordinate emergency responses.

“The damage of this network, which is the only means of communication in light of the interruption of communications, poses a great challenge for ambulance and emergency crews in reaching the wounded and sick,” PRCS said in a statement following the attacks.

On December 23, for instance, Israel’s bombing in northern Gaza killed 166 people. The next day, on Christmas Eve, Israeli jets flew back and forth over the Maghazi refugee camp (east of Deir Al-Balah) and the Bureij refugee camp (in the central Gaza Strip), bombing residential areas and killing at least a hundred people (including a two-week-old child).

Farewell John Pilger, one of the greatest anti-imperialist journalists and documentary film makers of our time. From exposing US war crimes in Vietnam to fighting for the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, Pilger was a trailblazing journalist, willing to challenge the powers that be in his pursuit of the truth.

We at Peoples Dispatch are proud to have published Pilger's work and will remember him fondly!

Agricultural production has come to a halt in Sudan’s breadbasket, Gezira.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are on the retreat after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) stormed across Gezira last week, disrupting harvest in this State which produces half of all the wheat grown in Sudan.

Farmers are too terrified to return to their fields, and have in some areas “gone so far as to flood canals and sacrifice their harvest in order to make it difficult for RSF to enter,” said Jamal (name changed), spokesperson of the Resistance Committees (RC) in Hasahisa city.

🇱🇧 Tuesday’s attack is the first time that the Israeli Air Force has bombed Beirut since 2006. Analysts warn that such an attack is likely to provoke a response from regional resistance groups which have thus far been holding back from large-scale attacks against Israel.

As journalist Rania Khalek of Breakthrough News commented, “Israel is playing with fire by assassinating Hamas officials in Beirut. They are begging for escalation. But Hezbollah is a powerful adversary capable of doing great damage to Israel… If Israel can’t defeat Qassam, which is operating under the harshest conditions from inside a besieged death camp, there is no way they can even begin to properly face the larger and more powerful Hezbollah without severe consequences.”
