The protester dog would often be seen protecting protesters and facing off with riot police in the middle of tear gas clouds. He became a symbol of resistance.
Loukanikos, who was around ten years old, died peacefully in 2014 after retiring from the protests. It's believed that he died from complications because of inhaling too much tear gas.

On October 9, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant harshened existing measures against Gaza when he announced a “complete blockade” of the enclave following the launch of the offensive by Palestinian resistance groups. In Gaza, there is to be “no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed,” Gallant said in a televised address. He also called Palestinians “human animals.”
