🇮🇳 Indian Police carried out a massive operation this morning targetting journalists and former employees of progressive media outlets Newsclick and Peoples Dispatch, as well as Tricontinental Research Services.

Newsclick editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha and administrator Amit Chakraborty have been arrested under the draconian anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). At least 500 police officers and intelligence agents participated in the operation.

On October 4, 75,000 healthcare workers at Kaiser Permanente facilities in several US states are set to go on strike for three days following the breakdown of contract negotiations last week.

This size of strike is unprecedented in the healthcare field in the US. “We are in a healthcare staffing crisis, but Kaiser is unwilling to even meet with our bargaining team to discuss a wage proposal that would keep good healthcare workers at our facilities,” wrote SEIU-UHW. “That has never happened before in the 25 years of our partnership.”

🇭🇹 On Monday, October 2 the United Nations Security Council voted to authorize a Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti, led by Kenya, to purportedly “fight street gangs.”

This deployment of foreign troops to Haiti is just the latest in a series of attempts on the part of Western powers spanning decades to subvert the country’s sovereignty and the popular will of the Haitian people.

The right-wing Modi government of India has escalated attacks on press freedom and human rights with the raids on journalists from Peoples Dispatch and Newsclick.

On October 3rd, at least 500 police officers and intelligence agents raided the homes of over 100 journalists, contractors, and former employees associated with the progressive news outlets Newsclick and Peoples Dispatch. The case was under the draconian UAPA law, and backed up with the baseless accusations made in an anti-China hit piece in the New York Times. These are the human casualties of McCarthyism.

The coordinated repressive action was carried out as part of an investigation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a draconian law which has been widely criticized by human rights organizations in India and internationally as it undermines civil liberties and rights.
