🇨🇺 “Pessimism is not the nature of revolutionaries. That is not an option for those of us who believe a better world is possible. It is not an option for those of us who have the belief that it is worth it to fight for that better world,” Díaz-Canel told the gathered North Americans.

#PeoplesHistory | Today, we remember the 43 students of the Ayotzinapa rural school for teachers who, according to reports, were abducted by Mexican security forces nine years ago.

The students' families, with social and human rights organizations, have been tirelessly fighting to know the truth of what happened that day. The disappearance happened during the right-wing government of Enrique Peña Nieto, which hid the facts and tried to blame the students as part of an alleged cartel.

The progressive AMLO government has made progress in the investigations. However, the army's role in this event hasn't been clarified and the student's relatives continue to protest to know what happened to their children.
On Friday, Canadian Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota declared Yaroslav Hunka, an elderly Ukrainian immigrant living in Canada, a “Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero.” “We thank him for all his service,” he said, adding beforehand that he was “proud” that the man lived in his electoral district.

Following numerous calls for his resignation, Rota stepped down on September 26.

🇮🇶 Hundreds of Iraqi prisoners kept in US detention centers in Iraq, including the largest facility Abu Ghraib, endured various forms of torture and abuse by the US armed forces between 2003 and 2009.

However, even after two decades, none of these Iraqis have been given any kind of redressal or compensation.

Over 2,500 people died or went missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe by September this year, stated the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a huge jump from last year’s figure from the same period of 1,680.

UNHCR Director Ruven Menikdiwela told the UN Security Council in a briefing on Thursday, September 28, that despite the increased number of deaths and accidents, migrants inflow into Europe did not slow down and there is no reason to believe that it will in the near future.

Democratic Senator Bob Menendez is facing serious corruption charges of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes—in cash, gold bars, furniture and luxury cars—to pass deals benefiting the Egyptian regime and businessmen of his home state of New Jersey.

This time, the smoking guns in his 39-page indictment are too big for Menendez’s colleagues, even close allies, to ignore, let alone Menendez’s constituents in the state of New Jersey.

With his future uncertain, Calla Walsh of CODEPINK looks at his legacy of anti-Cuba policies and raises the question of how a possible resignation could impact US-Cuba relations.

🇲🇽 Parents of the 43 students of the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College, who disappeared in 2014, lifted the sit-in protests that they had held for eight days in front of the Military Camp No. 1 in the capital Mexico City.

The decision came after the presentation of a new report by the Commission for Truth and Access to Justice in the Ayotzinapa case (COVAJ), which revealed that a meeting of authorities had taken place in October 2014 to construct the so-called “historic truth” and that it was attended by the then president Enrique Peña Nieto, among other officials.

The Conservative government’s decision to approve the development of the controversial Rosebank oil and gas field project in Scottish territorial waters has been widely criticized by climate activists and other progressive sections in the UK.

The offshore Rosebank oil, the largest untapped oil and gas field in the North Sea, is owned by the Norwegian energy giant Equinor ASA and Ithaca Energy plc. It is said to contain around 500 million barrels of oil.

🇪🇺/ 🇹🇳 The agreement was initially reached in July this year, as per which the EU will give USD 135 million to Tunisia to monitor and prevent migrants and asylum seekers from Africa from illegally crossing over to Europe.

Around EUR 42 million of the transfer will reportedly go to Tunisia’s coast guard and navy. Along with the army and other security forces, they have been accused of grave human rights violations and abuses against Black African migrants.

#PeoplesHistory | In 2019, Indigenous, peasant, student, and different social organizations from all over Ecuador took to the streets of the capital, Quito, to protest against the economic and labor measures imposed by the right-wing government of Lenin Moreno as a consequence of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

During 11 heroic days, the masses of Ecuador, led by the Indigenous movement, went on strike and protested in the streets of Quito, forcing the government to backtrack on some of its neoliberal IMF-imposed policies.

During the national strike, the police and armed forces of Ecuador were deployed and perpetrated a brutal repression. According to a Truth Commission report by the Ombudsman office the security forces perpetrated 249 alleged human rights violations, including six extrajudicial executions, 22 attacks on the right to life, three cases of sexual violence and 20 eye injuries.
