#PeoplesHistory | Today we remember the Brazilian friar who in the spirit of liberation theology was also a fighter for the oppressed people of Brazil.
In 1969, the political police of the US-backed military dictatorship arrested Tito de Alencar Lima and during his years in prison he was brutally tortured. The torture was so severe that he was left with severe mental scars, eventually leading to his suicide in 1974. In prison, Frei Tito wrote a letter about his torture which became a symbol in the human rights and anti-dictatorship movement.
The catholic church supported the military dictatorship and despised Frei Tito, calling him a “terrorist friar”, they never supported Tito and other imprisoned friars, such as Frei Betto.

#PeoplesHistory | Today we remember the revolutionary German playwright and poet, Bertolt Brecht.
During the Nazi regime in Germany, Brecht fled the country and ended up exiled in the US, where he was surveilled by the FBI and eventually subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee.
He returned to East Germany where he is known for creating what is now referred to as "epic theater" or "dialectical theater," which encouraged audiences to confront sociopolitical issues instead of simply being observers.

70% of Zambia's debt is held by Western institutions, and 220 million is held by investment giant BlackRock. In 2021, Zambia was diverting half of its entire public income to paying its external debts. Activists argue that BlackRock, which is worth USD 10 trillion, could easily cancel the debt and allow Zambia to develop.
