New York City is a bastion of extreme wealth. It is the city with the most billionaires, with a net worth totalling USD 616 billion. There are 737 residents with over one hundred million dollars to their names, and 345,600 millionaires.
Some point to the massive amount of housing vacancies to show that the resources are already there. In New York City, there are no laws regulating how long an apartment can be vacant for, despite the concurrent housing and migrant crises. In 2021, roughly one in ten of the city’s massive rent stabilized housing stock was vacant, constituting 88,830 apartments. As of 2021, there were 456,600 vacant units in the city. Far more than enough to house the 100,000 people sleeping in shelters.

🇵🇸 According to the Israeli human rights group, HaMoked, 99% of those being detained under the policy are Palestinians. Israeli authorities have labeled them as “dangerous militants” and justified their detention based on secret evidence which is not shared with them or their lawyers.
The detainees are officially not charged with any specific crime or tried before a court of law. The detention orders extend for periods between three to six months and can be indefinitely renewed. Detainees have often been kept in prison for extended periods, in some cases several years, without any legal or other recourse.

🇳🇪 Approximately 30,000 people gathered in Niger’s capital of Niamey on August 6, as the country faced a looming threat of military intervention led by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc.
Importantly, hundreds of people also took to the streets in the city of Arlit, where the French company Orano (the successor of the colonial, state-owned mining company Areva) has been mining uranium for decades, and a clear representation of the neocolonial extraction that France has continued to impose on countries such as Niger.

🇧🇭 In Bahrain, hundreds of prisoners have launched a hunger strike to protest the substandard conditions and stringent restrictions imposed on them.
A statement released on behalf of the prisoners by the banned opposition group Al-Wefaq reported that prison authorities prevent prisoners from performing prayers, arbitrarily place them in solitary confinement, implement prolonged lockdowns for up to 23 hours per day, disrupt family visits, and neglect healthcare for prisoners.

#PeoplesHistory | Today we remember the Brazilian friar who in the spirit of liberation theology was also a fighter for the oppressed people of Brazil.
In 1969, the political police of the US-backed military dictatorship arrested Tito de Alencar Lima and during his years in prison he was brutally tortured. The torture was so severe that he was left with severe mental scars, eventually leading to his suicide in 1974. In prison, Frei Tito wrote a letter about his torture which became a symbol in the human rights and anti-dictatorship movement.
The catholic church supported the military dictatorship and despised Frei Tito, calling him a “terrorist friar”, they never supported Tito and other imprisoned friars, such as Frei Betto.
