After spending 37 years in prison following the mass suppression of the Black liberation movement of the 1960s and 70s, he was only released in December 2022 after doctors gave him months to live due to his terminal bone cancer.

On the morning of July 12, US President Joe Biden hastily put out a statement that reeked of hypocrisy. “We stand with the Cuban people,” Biden said, “and their clarion call for freedom.” If the US government actually cared about the Cuban people, then the Biden administration would at the very least withdraw the 243 unilateral coercive measures implemented by the presidency of Donald Trump before he left office in January 2021; Biden—contrary to his own campaign promises—has not started the process to reverse Trump’s designation of Cuba as a “state sponsor of terrorism.” On March 9, 2021, Biden’s spokesperson Jen Psaki said, “A Cuba policy shift is not currently among President Biden’s top priorities.” Rather, the Trump “maximum pressure” policy intended to overthrow the Cuban government remains intact.
The United States has a six-decade history of trying to overthrow the Cuban government, including using assassinations and invasions as policy. In recent years, the US government has increased its financial support of people inside Cuba and in the Cuban émigré community in Miami, Florida; some of this money comes directly from the National Endowment for Democracy and from USAID. Their mandate is to accelerate any dissatisfaction inside Cuba into a political challenge to the Cuban Revolution.
Amid the increased pressure on Cuba by the US government, over 400 former heads of state, politicians, intellectuals, scientists, members of the clergy, artists, musicians and activists, including Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva of Brazil, Rafael Correa of Ecuador, intellectuals Noam Chomsky, Frei Betto, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortíz, artists Boots Riley, Chico Buarque, Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover, and Emma Thompson had called on US President Biden to "Let Cuba Live" and lift the 243 sanctions imposed by the Trump administration that hindered the country’s ability to buy lifesaving food and medicine.

#PeoplesHistory | Two years ago, Cuba experienced one of the most serious and coordinated destabilization campaigns against it in recent history. Right-wing sectors supported by US politicians, think tanks, and armed with an international social media strategy, attempted to exploit the discontent created by the tightening of the blockade to push for the overthrow of the Cuban revolutionary government.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel immediately took to the streets to engage in dialogue with the communities that had participated in the protests and listen to their grievances. In cities and towns across the country, people were on the streets to show their support behind the Cuban revolution and to reject the imperialist attacks.

Heads of state from CELAC and the EU blocs are set to meet in Brussels next week for the III CELAC-EU Summit, the first in eight years.
However, Latin American authorities and civil society organizations have begun to raise the alarm over the conduct of the EU with regards to the format and content of the discussions, as well as the posture of the EU towards Latin America.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said in an official statement: “Our region has changed. CELAC is the solid and united voice of Latin America and the Caribbean and must be respected. Those who try to impose a biased and Europeanist vision on the bi-regional relationship, pretending to ignore the priorities and interests of our region, will have no chance of success in Brussels.”
