#PeoplesHistory | Today is the birthday of Chile's socialist President Salvador Allende.
Allende was one of the first Marxist presidents elected by the popular vote. In his less than three years in office, he carried forward important socialist policies to better the lives of Chileans, such as the nationalization of copper mining, nationalization of the bank, agrarian reform, and health, education, and social reforms.
Allende was killed by the military forces of Chile while taking up arms to defend the La Moneda Palace, during the US-backed coup led by Pinochet. On September 11, 1973, the armed forces of Chile bombed and invaded the presidential palace, killing Allende.
The US-backed Pinochet dictatorship in Chile was characterized by the systematic violation of human rights, the annihilation of the political opposition, and the limiting of basic freedoms.

The III International Dilemmas of Humanity Conference, organized by the International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA), will be held between October 14 and 18, in Johannesburg.
As per a statement released on Wednesday, June 28, announcing the upcoming conference, movements from around the world have initiated the process of dialogues and coordination for the upcoming event, which intends to “to debate and create consensus that will lead to a common platform for reflection and action.”

Today, we remember the members of the LGBTQ+ community who fought against police repression in the 6-day #StonewallRebellion, which began in the early hours of this day in 1969.
At the time, the New York police had a policy of closing gay bars and on June 28, 1969 it raided the Stonewall Inn which was considered a "refuge" for mainly working-class and poor members of the LGBTQ+ community.
However, the community started resisting arrests and fighting back against invasive body searches. The LGBTQ+ community, including many Black people and Latinx alongside working-class people, physically fought the police, triggering the uprising that lasted for six days.

The Stonewall Uprising sparked and catalyzed the gay rights movement in the US and around the world. After the Stonewall events, radical members of the LGBTQ+ community formed the Gay Liberation Front, which was revolutionary for the movement.
The Gay Liberation Front organized anniversary protests in several US cities, becoming the annual Pride celebration that we know to this day worldwide.
