A couple of decades ago, investing in companies was quite a tedious task. One of the main reasons is that you needed to physically locate and approach a broker to order your stocks before waiting for a few days for confirmation.

Thankfully in today’s day and age, investing is far more accessible. There is an abundance of online brokers and trading platforms that allow you to buy and sell stocks with just the push of a button.

Besides just buying and selling stocks, many trading platforms also have a slew of perks such as friendly UI navigation for the less tech-savvy, wide variety of stocks and ETFs to choose from, and cryptocurrency support that traditional brokers simply cannot compete with.

For those who are new to investing, not many are immediately aware of the differences between stocks and bonds.

Both are readily available in Malaysia, but what are the core differences, and why should someone choose to invest in bonds over stocks instead?

“For clarity, let’s use a house to represent a company. If you choose to buy stocks in that house, then the homeowner has to give you one of the rooms in that house. However, if you choose to buy bonds in that same house, then you are lending money to that homeowner to expand the house, and in return, he pays you a small percentage of the total amount you lent him monthly”.

The Global ESG Monitor Survey revealed Malaysia has fallen behind in non-financial reporting transparency, ranking joint fifth with the Dow Jones among the 10 indices surveyed.

While we at #PEGH celebrate the great strides Malaysian companies have achieved in environmental and socio-economic aspects, this goes to show that there is still more work to be done which reinvigorates our resolve.

Without strong governance, the public will lose faith in the organizations that we all collectively rely on the build and advance our civilization so we must act fast today to secure our tomorrows.

Usually, the emphasis is placed on larger companies and conglomerates when it comes to adhering to ESG criteria. However, the question remains: How do Malaysian SMEs fare in comparison?

In a survey conducted by Alliance Bank found that 86% of SMEs had never heard of ESG, but over half had adopted ESG principles on their own.

The COVID-19 pandemic has driven ESG adoption, with 63% of respondents optimistic about ESG in the next six to twelve months. However, adopting ESG could affect their operations and financial performance.

Also, if you are an SME business owner, we would like to inquire whether you were aware of ESG approximately a year ago and what policies your company has adopted to adhere to it.
