Ethiopia accession steering committee signals resumption of talks in early 2025

A high-level delegation from Ethiopia led by Kassahun Gofe Balami, Minister of Trade and Regional Integration and Chief Negotiator for WTO Accession, visited the WTO on 5-11 December to prepare for the reactivation of the country’s accession Working Party in early 2025.

The visit included briefing sessions on WTO Accession, jointly delivered by the World Bank and the WTO Secretariat on 9–10 December 2024. Furthermore, Ethiopia expressed its readiness to actively engage with WTO members in advancing its bilateral market access negotiations.

As Ethiopia prepares for its 5th Working Party meeting in 2025, the Steering Committee agreed on an accession roadmap which outlines steps and timelines for concluding the negotiations, currently envisaged for 2026.

Ethiopia articulated its intention to continue proactive engagement and collaboration with members based on the roadmap, emphasizing that WTO membership will unlock significant opportunities and foster long-term development of the country alongside its parallel active engagement in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Ethiopia first launched its WTO accession process in 2003 and resumed official negotiations for accession in 2020. However, the talks were put on hold the same year due to the country's internal issues.

Independent Director

According to #NBE Directive NO. SBB/91/2024 article 2.9;

“Independent Director” means a non-executive director that has no family of first degree consanguinity relationship or business, professional or commercial relationship with the bank, and is neither part of senior management nor involved in the day-to-day operations of the bank.

An independent director is an experienced board member that is not under any undue influence, internal or external, political or ownership that would impede his/her ability to exercise objective judgment.

Candidates who would not normally be considered to be an independent director include natural persons who are:

1. a direct or indirect shareholder, a director, a chief executive officer, or a senior executive officer of a bank and/or the spouse or relative in the first degree of consanguinity or affinity of such shareholder, director, chief executive officer, or senior executive officer, or

2. a shareholder, director, chief executive officer, senior executive officer of a company that has any contractual obligation towards the bank;

3. involved, either directly or indirectly, in any legal proceedings or out-of-court disputes against the bank, the parent undertaking or their subsidiaries;

4. having any business, professional or commercial relationship with the bank over the past two years; and

5. having any financial obligations towards the bank in an amount cumulatively above Birr fifty (50) million.

📜 On Thursday, December 19, 2024, #AeTrade Group and the Government of #Ethiopia signed a Host Country Agreement, officially establishing AeTrade's East African Regional HQ in Addis Ababa, near the AU HQ.

The agreement aims to accelerate digital & financial inclusion and empower SMEs, women, and youth across Ethiopia and East Africa.

The HPR unanimously approved a bill for the establishment and management of a special fund for the activities of green legacy and rehabilitation of degraded lands, crucial for the effective implementation of the Green Legacy Initiative.

🌍 Which Banks Shape the Global Financial System?

The largest banks in the world continue to dominate financial markets.

JP Morgan Chase leads with a staggering $693 billion market cap.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China takes the top spot at $286 billion in China.

According to the FAA facility-dashboard, there are 5,854 FAA-Certified repair stations (MROs) in the world.

Of the 5,854 repair stations, 16 are found in Africa. Only six African countries have FAA -Certified repair station:
🇹🇩 Chad (1),
🇪🇬 Egypt (3),
🇪🇹 Ethiopia (1),
🇰🇪 Kenya (2),
🇲🇦 Morocco (4) and
🇿🇦 South Africa (5).

Tinny 🇦🇪 E UAE, however, has a total of 18 FAA-Certified repair stations. The total area of the UAE is less than a tenth of Ethiopia.
