Putin has called for both the "denazification" and the "decommunization" of Ukraine. This is just realpolitik—he's rationalizing his country's geopolitical interests. Ukraine is obviously neither a nazi nor a communist country.

The situation in Ukraine is as tragic as it was avoidable. In 2014, Western elites supported a color revolution which deposed the Ukrainian President, Yanukovych, who was pro-Russia.

Since then, we’ve beefed up Ukraine’s military and escalated tensions further with Russia. Putin made it clear that Ukraine joining NATO would be viewed as a grievous provocation. When the West refused to rule that out, he invaded.

Regardless of whether you think Putin is justified, inescapable is the fact that this could have been prevented. Thus, any right-wing pundit or politician condemning Russia without acknowledging the above is guilty of knowingly or unknowingly echoing State Department propaganda.

War in Europe is a bad thing. I initially mused that NATO being humiliated and delegitimized was a good thing—and generally it is—but the invasion of Ukraine appears to be uniting Europe for the wrong reasons. This conflict appears to be solidifying a pan-Europeanism rooted in Western, liberal/progressive values in opposition to Russia’s implicit ethnonationalism and conservatism.

Ideally, the war ends soon with no further loss of life, Russia is sparing with its annexations, and we get America out of NATO as soon as possible. (Note that this is the ideal, not the likely outcome.)
