America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan has been messy. That much is undeniable. But would it have gone better under Trump? If you’re a conservative pundit, chances are you’re practically out of breath at this point, having spent the last week arguing that Trump would have indeed done a better job.
This, of course, is a huge counterfactual. We simply have no idea what Trump would have done. Perhaps Trump would have taken us out of Afghanistan in an orderly fashion, ensuring that American personnel and equipment made it safely home. However, under Trump we could have seen more chaos – it’s not as if his administration was defined by flawless governance – or we could have not left altogether at all.
