There is undeniably a top-down, elite-imposed agenda to mix together all peoples, destroying true diversity in the attempt to create a deracinated mass of consumer slaves. This is multiculturalism and I'd wager most Trump voters—regardless of race—are against it.

Italians, Irish, and other white ethnics were never considered non-white. They were considered white, but many WASPs in America were concerned about mass immigration from Catholic countries, particularly given that many of the immigrants coming in were poor.

Were Italians considered non-white, they would have been forbidden from participating in white-only organizations and intermarrying with Anglo-Americans. That never happened.

Noel Ignatiev, the notorious anti-white intellectual, is largely responsible for promulgating the myth that white ethnics were originally viewed as non-white.
