Russia says its forests absorb so much CO2 that it can *increase* emissions thru 2050 and even start selling carbon credits. Meanwhile wildfires here have released more CO2 in 3 months than Germany does in a year. ( A carbon credit is a tradable permit or certificate that provides the holder of the credit the right to emit one ton of carbon dioxide or an equivalent of another greenhouse gas – it's essentially an offset for producers of such gases.)

Technology has unfolded new possibilities for progress but also for accumulating unrestrained wealth, and many of us behave in ways which demonstrate little concern for other people or the limits of the planet.
