ORTHODOX JAPAN

Last month, I had the privilege of attending liturgy in a Japanese Orthodox church for the first time ever! My church visit in the southern port city of Kagoshima in Kyushu, full of a rich local and international history, was completely unplanned.

When it comes to religion in general, my perception of the Japanese mentality could be summarized as covering all the bases. The latter is evident from their participation in both Buddhism and Shinto, as well as the way in which they participate. This makes the Japanese Orthodox truly stand out. This community in Japan is small, very small—some estimates I’ve seen total around 10,000 members—but very dedicated.

During my earlier trips to Japan, I only knew a little bit about that country’s Orthodox heritage. I’ve strolled past Japan’s main church, Nikorai-do in Tokyo, a few times, for example, but never walked in to observe their liturgy.
