Eclipses are signs from Allah to warn and frighten the people. They are a reminder that basic parts of our life that we are accustomed to are completely and entirely in the control of Allah alone. Just like He blessed us with the sun, the moon and every other blessing, He can take them away at any time.

Allah says:

{قُلۡ أَرَءَيۡتُمۡ إِن جَعَلَ ٱللَّـهُ عَلَيۡكُمُ ٱلَّيۡلَ سَرۡمَدًا إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ مَنۡ إِلَٰهٌ غَيۡرُ ٱللَّـهِ يَأۡتِيكُم بِضِيَآءٍۚ أَفَلَا تَسۡمَعُونَ}

"Say, Have you considered: if Allāh should make the night continuous for you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allāh could bring you light? Then will you not hear?"

{قُلۡ أَرَءَيۡتُمۡ إِن جَعَلَ ٱللَّـهُ عَلَيۡكُمُ ٱلنَّهَارَ سَرۡمَدًا إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ مَنۡ إِلَٰهٌ غَيۡرُ ٱللَّـهِ يَأۡتِيكُم بِلَيۡلٖ تَسۡكُنُونَ فِيهِۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ}


"Say, Have you considered: if Allāh should make the day continuous for you until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allāh could bring you night in which you may rest? Then will you not see?"

[Surah Al-Qaṣaṣ: 71-72]

Blessings are maintained through gratitude to Allah and obeying Him. They are removed due to sins and ungratefulness.

These signs are a reminder that Allah has the power to remove everything we hold dear at anytime. If He can remove even the sun and the moon, what guarantee do we have that He won't remove our other blessings? What guarantee do we have that He will even return the sun and the moon?

{وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ دُونَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ}

We will certainly make them taste some of the minor punishment before the major punishment, so that they may return (to the Right Path)".

[Surah As-Sajdah: 21]

This should be a wake up call for all of us to reevaluate ourselves, quit our sins, repent to Allah and make meaningful change to our lives.

Whilst the eclipse is happening, it is prescribed to do the following:

1. Offer the Eclipse Prayer (Salatul Khusuf)
2. Make Dua
3. Beg Allah for forgiveness
4. Remember Allah and do Dhikr
5. Say 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is greater than everything)
6. Give to charity

And Allah knows best.

Roman Urdu Translation:
"Ae iman walon, mushrik (shirk karne wale) na-paak hain, to is saal ke baad woh Masjid Al-Haram ke qareeb na ayen. Aur agar tumhein faqr ka darr ho to anqareeb Allah tumhe apne fazal se gani kar dega, agar woh chahe. Beshak Allah jannne wala, hikmat wala hai."
Authentic Hadith:
Narrated Abu Huraira: Abu Bakr sent me on Hajj, and he was the amir (leader) of the Hajj in that year. He sent me with a group of people on the day of Nahar (10th of Dhul-Hijjah) to announce to the people that after this year, no polytheist should perform Hajj, and no one should circumambulate the Ka'bah naked. (Sahih al-Bukhari)
