One thing to note is that he would have generated more power if the turbine was lower, benefiting greatly from the increased water pressure of the "head" (the weight of water above the turbine). He also must have had a sluice gate and a temporary water diversion channel somewhere upstream, that we don't see - enabling him to work on the system in a dry channel and then restore the flow later. This setup should run for years with some maintenance and provide valuable, continual, reliable off grid power!
