When you grow carrots, the soil surface should be cleared of trash, rocks and large pieces of bark, so rake it thoroughly. You can leave smaller plant matter on the ground because this can help enrich the soil. The quality of the soil is a very important factor in successfully growing carrots; it should be sandy, well-drained loam. Heavy soils cause the carrots to mature slowly.
