“Our goal is to give students experiences they can relate to. The more meaningful their experiences are, the more effective the learning can be.”

This is the driving force behind Source Academy, the flagship teaching tool of CS1101S: Programming Methodology 🌐.

Together with fellow lecturers Dr Boyd Anderson, Dr Low Kok Lim, and Dr Sanka Rasnayaka, #NUSComputing’s Associate Professor Martin Henz wants to give students the opportunity to contextualise their programming skills 💻 in real-time.

Alan Turing's 1936 paper, "On Computable Numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem," is widely regarded as the foundation of computer science 💻.

Many assume that the paper was intended as an abstract model of human computation aimed at solving David Hilbert's decision problem, but this may not be the case.

In his talk "The Logical Route to the Turing Machine" held at #NUSComputing, NUS Visiting Professor Peter Millican from the University of Oxford will explore a fresh perspective on Turing's work and the fascinating intersection between mathematics, logic, and computing.

Is the metaverse 🌐 just another fad or is it the shape of things to come? And if so, how should businesses prepare themselves for the reality of a virtual future?

According to #NUSComputing’s Senior Lecturer Dr. Lu Weiquan, “Companies that want to leverage on the metaverse have to first think about whether or not there is a reason for them to digitize their services.”

“We are definitely moving more towards a more ‘metaverse-type’ environment. However, it's very important to realize that not everything that is virtual is metaverse.”

What happens when you trick AI 🤖 into doing something it didn’t expect?

According to #NUSComputing’s Assistant Professor Trevor E. Carlson, this can lead to data leaks and a loss of privacy 💻. This is what inspired Asst Prof Trevor and PhD students Arash Pashrashid and Ali Hajiabadi to develop Spectify, a detector which identifies and prevents side channel attacks.

Since then, their findings have been published in a paper titled, “Fast, Robust and Accurate Detection of Cache-based Spectre Attack Phases”.

And through this, Asst Prof Trevor hopes that his team’s research will “lead to a new class of energy-efficient systems that can continuously and efficiently detect potential side-channel issues early.”
