[𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀' 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲] You’ve heard of Game of Thrones…but have you heard of GAME OF TONES? 🎶 🎹 ⚔️

Learning by playing - that’s what our faculty members at NUS Computing wanted to achieve with this fun, music contest for students!

Game of Tones is run on the Source Academy, an immersive, online virtual environment where Computing freshmen learn programming skills as part of the CS1101S Programming Methodology module.

Game of Tones challenges students to be creative and to flex their programming muscles by using programming to generate sounds or music, elegantly and concisely. This could be replicating a favourite song with programming, or composing an entirely new song. At the end of the contest, students get to vote for the best programmed songs, and generally just have fun at an online ‘music party’! 🥳

👇 Hit the link below to learn more about Game of Tones, and turn the volume up to listen to the work of past winners from Sem 1, AY 20/21! 🎧

The World Bank estimates that worldwide, roughly 1.7 billion adults do not have a bank account. Thanks to fintech, a new world has opened up for the previously unbanked, and empowered underserved customers with apps like Yu'e Bao. 📲📊📈

NUS Computing Associate Professor Heng Cheng Suang and Research Fellow Tan Tianhui studied how Yu’e Bao - a money market fund built into the popular Alipay payments app - radically reformed China's financial industry, by targeting people who are less IT savvy and offering novel incentives to encourage them to adopt their services.

What was NUS Computing senior lecturer Dr Colin Tan like as a student? An 'out-standing' one, he says: Interrupting teachers, talking loudly to classmates, and spending much of his time standing outside the classroom. 🤭

Read more to find out how Dr Colin became a lecturer at NUS, thanks to his insatiable curiosity for science and computing, and fierce teachers.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! 🥮 🍵 🐇
🚶‍♀🚶‍♂️Who would have thought that they way you walk could be used to secure your devices? NUS Computing’s Dr Terence Sim and his research team have found that the way a person walks is not just an indicator of one's health - it can also be used as a form of energy-efficient user authentication, and predict a person's physical attributes. Read more about his work below!
