Today, we fast the final fast of the month of Ramaḍān, uncertain whether we will ever meet this beloved guest again in our lives. We part from it with heavy hearts, realising how little we valued the precious time it brought — how many nights were lost in neglect, and how many days slipped away in laziness.
For fasting in the month of Ramaḍān is far greater than fasting outside of it.
So on this final day of this blessed month, we turn back to Allah — humbled, broken, and in need — confessing our shortcomings and our weaknesses, recognising that we are in desperate need of His mercy.
There is no deity in existence we can turn to if He were to turn us away. There is no one we can place our hope in besides Him. He is our Allah — the One, the Eternal.
To whom can we complain while He is the Greatest, the Most Able?
To whom can we turn for help while He is our Protecting Master, _al-Mawlā_, and the One who grants victory, _al-Nāṣir_?
Who can mend our broken hearts while He is _al-Jābir_, the Mender of hearts?
He knows what lies within our souls and the deepest of secrets.
He is the One who only increases in grace and generosity when asked.
Who has ever asked Him and been deprived?
Who has ever called upon Him and been turned away?
He is our refuge when all paths are cut off,
and our sanctuary when all means fail.
O Allah, our Lord — to You is our complaint, and to You is our return.
You are the One whose help is sought, and upon You alone we rely.
There is no power and no strength except through You.
We ask You, O Allah, to free our necks — and the necks of our loved ones — from the Fire.
اللهم اختم لنا شهر رمضان برضوانك، والعتق من نيرانك، والفوز بجناتك
O Allah, conclude for us the month of Ramaḍān with Your pleasure,
with freedom from Your Fire,
and with success in attaining Your Gardens of Paradise.

The Misplaced Focus of Modern ʿUmrah | Shaykh Dr. Abul Hasan
These days one notices a rather peculiar trend taking hold. Whenever someone returns from performing Umrah, the centre of their conversation is seldom the act of worship itself. Instead, it swiftly shifts to the hotel. With considerable pride they recount how close their accommodation was to the Haram, how the Kaaba could be seen directly from the room, how swift the lifts were, what was served at breakfast, and just how exorbitant the room rate had been. It appears as though the real triumph lay in the luxury of the hotel rather than the sincerity with which the Umrah was fulfilled.
The irony is striking: to any listener it seems less that the person had gone to perform Umrah than that they had visited merely to furnish a hotel review. “We scarcely needed to step outside – the Haram lay directly before us.” “We had arranged such an expensive booking.” “We secured a room with an excellent view.” These details are conveyed with genuine enthusiasm. Yet, regrettably, one hears nothing of how many tawafs were completed, how long they wept before Allah, how many supplications were offered, or what transformation occurred within the heart.
What ought to be shared instead is an account of the spiritual workings at the Haram: how the heart softened in that sacred place, how one’s bond with Allah grew firmer. It would be fitting also to hear of encounters with Muslims from every corner of the world, of conversations on matters of faith, and of how the light of iman spread among them. That rare moment when the entire Ummah assembles in one place should serve as the finest occasion for da’wah, fraternity and the deepening of faith.
In former times, those returning from Umrah spoke with genuine spirituality. They described the atmosphere within the Haram, extolled the majesty of Allah’s House, and spoke of how their iman had been renewed. Today, however, it must be said with sorrow that Umrah has for many become less an act of devotion than a symbol of status. Some have even fashioned it into a form of fashion – a means of signalling their prosperity by mentioning costly flights taken during Ramadan and stays in such-and-such opulent hotel.
Hearing these accounts leaves one with a heavy heart. One cannot but wonder whether we have somehow misplaced the very essence of worship. Have we begun, perhaps, to seek the admiration of people rather than striving to please Allah alone?

Many people think the goal is simply reading the Qur’ān, but the scholars of this Ummah have always emphasised that how you recite matters just as much.
The Qur’ān is to be recited with precision, understood with reflection, and lived through action.
Focusing on one while neglecting the others is an imbalance — understanding without implementation, reflection without correct recitation, or recitation without comprehension. These are all rights the Qur’ān has over us, meant to come together, not be separated.
Tajwīd is the foundation. It is from honouring and preserving the words of Allāh subḥānahū wa taʿālā — giving each letter its due as it was revealed. From there, a person builds: seeking to understand and striving to live by what they recite.
Al-Imām Ibn al-Jazari رحمه الله said in his Muqaddimah:
“Reciting with Tajwīd is an absolute necessity.
Whoever does not apply Tajwīd to the Qur’ān is sinful.”
Allāh subḥānahū wa taʿālā says:
“And recite the Qur’ān with measured recitation.” (73:4)
ʿAlī رضي الله عنه explained this verse:
“Tartīl is perfecting the letters and recognising the places of stopping.”
Tajwīd is not about unattainable perfection — but about correcting our recitation, preserving the words of Allāh, and fulfilling the rights of His Book.
Incorrect pronunciation can alter meanings and, as mentioned by many scholars, may in some cases affect the validity of one’s ṣalāh — especially in Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.
At the same time, this is not a call to despair.
If your recitation is not perfect, do not abandon ṣalāh or the Qur’ān. Rather, continue, strive, and improve step by step. Not every mistake carries the same ruling, and each person is accountable according to their ability.
Allāh subḥānahū wa taʿālā says:
“Allāh does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.” (2:286)
So continue your ṣalāh, continue reciting, and seek to improve through a qualified teacher. This is an individual responsibility upon each of us.
May Allāh enable us to recite His Book correctly, sincerely, and in a way that pleases Him.
