On September 16, after two years of the pandemic, NU GSPP strategic partner Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy celebrated Cultural Night themed “Back Together Again.” The event was organized by the LKYSPP student cohort and reflected the value of the Singaporean international community. All participants presented their booths showcasing unique cultural heritage through food, games, and apparel.

Our MPP students - Meruyert Adylgazina, Moldir Atenova, and Laura Maitanova – who started their student exchange program in Singapore this semester also participated in the event. They represented Kazakhstan in the Central Asian booth with students from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Later that night, LKYSPP students showed their talents in cultural performances, dances, and songs. As a student from Kazakhstan, Meruyert played the famous kui “Adai” on the national Kazakh instrument dombra. She noted: “The audience welcomed me with a loud round of applause. It surely was a warm welcome and a memorable start to the school term”.

On 15 September 2022, SDSN Kazakhstan, Nazarbayev University, FAO Kazakhstan, and JLU Giessen University met and held a productive meeting on possible options for cooperation, especially on joint research work in Kazakhstan and the potential future role of Nazarbayev University in the SDGnexus Network. Also, existing apparent links between SDSN Kazakhstan and the SDGnexus network were explored during the meeting.

Are democracies, including long-standing ones like the United States, at risk of democratic decline because voters cannot always be relied upon to protect liberal institutions and democratic procedures?

Despite the pessimism of many policymakers and academics, a reanalysis of the existing experimental literature encouragingly shows that voters in long-standing democracies are reliable enough checks on undemocratic behavior to make democratic decline highly unlikely.

NU, @nu_sdf, @nu_sports, and @nu.msh, organize the Trial Run dedicated to raising money for Aiziya, a 1-year-old daughter of Ainur Murumbayeva, HR manager at NU SSH. The baby girl had been diagnosed with a terrible disease - retinoblastoma of both eyes. Now, Aiziya has completed two medical treatment courses in Switzerland and must attend the eye clinic every month. About 15 million tenge is needed for further procedures, so we invite all NU family members to participate in the Charity Trial Run to support little Aiziya as a single community! 🙌

The tournament will be conducted on Sunday, October 16th, 2022, from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Sports Center. There will be 6-8 teams, including one team from each cohort and one or two teams from faculty and staff. The winning team will be rewarded with NU GSPP branded products.

Meet new book by NU GSPP Associate Professor & Vice Dean for Academic Affairs Riccardo Pelizzo: The Culture of Accountability. A Democratic Virtue

NU GSPP Associate Professor & Vice Dean for Academic Affairs Riccardo Pelizzo and Italian political scientist, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Bologna Gianfranco Pasquino recently released the book The Culture of Accountability. A Democratic Virtue.

Over the years, the literature on accountability has attempted to define what accountability is, how it can be secured, and whether horizontal accountability is preferable to electoral accountability in some (non-properly democratic) settings. It has also been argued that the notion of accountability is relatively new and primarily the result of institutional conditions. The Culture of Accountability challenges some of these views. It suggests that accountability is a process and not an event, that it is a democratic virtue, that electoral accountability is essential in settings that are not perfectly democratic, and that the notion of accountability is not as recent as some authors seem to believe. The level of accountability in a country depends not only on institutional factors but also on cultural ones--and in doing it shows that some facets of culture have a more significant impact than others.
