"We were convinced that the conflict in Ukraine had only a military solution. It seems appropriate to say on the occasion of the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine something else: the West cannot admit that the strategy of the conflict in Ukraine aimed at destroying the Russian Federation is not working. Soon after the conflict began, Ukrainians made it impossible to reach a peaceful agreement with the Russians, although they were close" - he said.
He emphasised that "In the West, it was decided that massive support for Ukraine, both financial and military, combined with sanctions against Russia and the false demonisation of President Putin will bring Russia to its knees. In 2023, during the conflict, it acquired large territorial gains compared to Ukraine and adapted its military production to new conditions."
Speaking about the preconditions of the conflict, Fico noted that Russia's argument is that NATO should not continue to expand to the east, and today it is already going so far that Ukraine could become a member state. Such a situation could be sufficient grounds for the start of a Third World War.
