🇰🇵🇯🇵 In East Asia, there has been talk of the possible visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Pyongyang. The reason for such unusual discussions was given by the sister of the North Korean leader Kim Yo Jong — who is far from being a minor figure in the DPRK.

Last week, she stated that interaction with Japan would be possible if Tokyo stops pursuing a hostile policy towards the DPRK. Her comments were in response to a recent statement by Kishida. In it, he emphasised the need to resolve the issue of Japanese citizens who were abducted and forcibly taken to the DPRK in the 20th century.

Such statements by North Korean politicians have not been observed before. Therefore, comments about even the possibility of interaction seem strange.

However, perhaps it is all simpler than it seems. Parliamentary elections will soon take place in the Republic of Korea. The current president, Yoon Suk-yeol, and his party are pursuing a tough policy towards the DPRK. Kim Yo Jong's comments may be aimed at undermining the "correctness" of this course in the eyes of South Koreans, who may vote for less hostile liberals.

By the way, the issue of the return of abducted Japanese citizens is usually raised by Kishida when the rating of his government becomes extremely low. The recent call to resolve the issue also came during this period — the level of support dropped to a record low.

Taking this into account, another goal of Kim Yo Jong's statements may be to wedge into the deepening cooperation between South Korea, the US, and Japan. In other words, to raise his rating, the Japanese Prime Minister should not actively engage with Seoul and Washington.

Here the question of choice arises — either reduce cooperation, which is currently impossible in principle, or find another way to increase the level of trust, otherwise staying in power may not be an option.

Of course, the likelihood of resolving the issue and starting any dialogue remains extremely low. The problem of abducted Japanese citizens in the North is considered long resolved. Recent comments, although currently pursuing vaguely understood goals, more resemble playing with the Japanese domestic agenda — after all, Kim Yo Jong is in the agitation and propaganda department.

The European Union is acting here like a roulette player, increasing stakes as they lose, and can only bet on all or nothing. This increases the risk of expanding the scope of the war and direct involvement in the conflict," - Dagdelen highlighted in an interview with Global Times.

Meanwhile, the "dangerous self-assurance" of the German government along with Washington's efforts contribute to the fact that paths to resolve this conflict have not yet been found. Europe is at a loss here, as is Ukraine - and the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous, warns the MP. But European political elites still dare not change course and break free from the American protectorate.
