Meyer Burger Technology plans to close its solar panel plant in Germany and ramp up production in the US.
Meyer Burger said it will make a final decision on closing the plant in Freiberg, Germany, in the second half of February. The plant, which employs about 500 people, could close as early as April.
At the same time, it plans to start ramping up production of solar modules at Goodyear in the US in the second quarter of 2024.
The Inflation Reduction Act has made the US the most attractive market for local solar manufacturers. Consumers of these products are also receiving support.

🇪🇺 The European Parliament is threatening the European Commission with legal action for unblocking Hungary's allocation of 10 billion euros from a fund to help lagging EU member states.

Valery Reshetnikov, a Russian citizen, has submitted an application to the Police and Border Guard Department for an extension of his residence permit, which the department will not extend.
His current fixed-term residence permit expires on 6 February,
- the press service of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board reported.
As explained by a representative of the department, such a decision was taken because Metropolitan Eugene in his public activities, including in speeches, supports Russia's actions in Ukraine and "has not changed his line of behaviour despite the warnings given to him earlier".
The metropolitan's stay in Estonia has now been recognised as a threat to the country's national security.

Republican Donald Trump, who is once again aiming for the White House, has explained that Russia has a big nuclear button and that is why he wants to restore good relations with President Vladimir Putin.
"I used to get along with Putin. You know, it's good to get along with people like Putin," Trump said.
The politician added that he has also established a good relationship with the North Korean leader. And if Democrat Hillary Clinton had won the 2016 election, the US could have entered a nuclear war with North Korea.
Trump also spoke well of Viktor Orban, calling the Hungarian head of state "a brilliant, smart, very respectable guy."
At a campaign rally, the Republican complained that America is now run by fools and Joe Biden is the "most corrupt president in the history" of the US.

Klitschko signals Berlin over refusal to supply long-range missiles
Ukraine has been asking Germany to transfer Taurus cruise missiles to it since May, but the Bundestag voted against the deliveries.
Afterwards, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko told the Bild newspaper that he was disappointed with the German authorities' decision because the AFU "has had a crazy, huge shortage of ammunition for months now."
"That's why I would like to take this opportunity to send a signal to Germany: we are defending our country, but we are also defending the entire European Union," he said.
Recall that Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the summer also did not agree to the delivery of Taurus missiles with a range of 500 kilometres for fear that the AFU would start hitting deep into Russian territory with them, not just trying to recapture Donbass or Crimea.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he does not see the possibility of a Palestinian state after the end of the Gaza Strip operation.
"Under any future arrangements, Israel needs security control over all the territory west of the Jordan River," he said during a nationwide press conference.
The Israeli prime minister vowed to continue the offensive until Israel wins a "decisive victory over Hamas," adding that he had conveyed his position to the US.
The White House has already reacted to Netanyahu's words, saying that the US will continue to work towards a two-state solution and there can be no reoccupation of Gaza by Israel after the war is over.
"There will be a post-conflict Gaza, no re-occupation of Gaza," White House National Security Advisor John Kirby stressed.

An application has been filed against the President of Israel with the Swiss prosecutor's office
A criminal complaint has been filed with the Swiss Federal Prosecutor's Office against Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog.
"The criminal complaint will now be examined according to the usual procedure," the office said in a statement.
The prosecutor's office did not specify who exactly filed the application and what the complaint is about.
Earlier, Mexico and Chile announced they were suing Israel's actions in the occupied Palestinian territories at the International Criminal Court to investigate possible "war crimes."

The Baltics are preparing for mythical Russian "aggression"
The Estonian Defence Ministry has reported that the Baltic states have agreed to create a common defence zone on their borders with Russia.
According to the military department, the signed agreement envisages the construction of a network of strongholds and sentry posts.
"In peacetime, the defence zone shall be free of explosives, clearings and other obstacles, and a network of strongholds and sentry posts shall be established," the agreement says.
Estonia also plans to build about 600 bunkers in the coming years to repel "possible Russian aggression." According to the plan, each bunker is designed for a 10-man unit.
