China has criticised Taiwan's decision to increase the period of compulsory military service from four months to a year.
"Isn't this preparation for war, is it not forcing Taiwanese youth to go to the front and become cannon fodder for Taiwanese independence?" said an official spokesman for the Chinese State Council Chancellery.
As reported earlier this week, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said Beijing should firmly crack down on any attempts by Taiwan to secede.

Ukraine would become a thorn in the flesh of Europe; people dreaming of cultural production, of a strong and healthy Ukrainian nation, maturing in their own country, would be convinced that rather than their own country, they have an international company, and instead of healthy development, rapid progress of decay and rot.
Whosoever thought that the geographic location of Ukraine and its area, that the state in which the Ukrainian element finds itself, with its spiritual and material resources, and finally, that the role which the Ukrainian question has in todayโs economic and political position of the world could be otherwise โ he does not have an ounce of imagination.
The Ukrainian question has various advocates, both in Ukraine itself and abroad. Among the latter especially, there are many who know very well what they are doing.
There are those, however, who would solve this issue by separating Ukraine from Russia, which they present as very idyllic. Those who are so naรฏve would do well to keep their hands away from her.

North Korean leader called for intensified preparations for war
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the second day of the ninth plenum of the central committee of the Workers' Party of Korea called for intensified efforts to prepare for war because of "unprecedented" US intrigues.
"Combat tasks have been set for the People's Army, the military industry, nuclear weapons and civil defence fields to further accelerate the improvement of war preparations," he said.
North Korea launched the Manrigyong-1 reconnaissance satellite on 21 November. A CTAC report at the time emphasised that it would improve the country's preparedness for military action, the likelihood of which is increasing "due to the enemies' highly dangerous military actions".
North Korea later said it would regard interference with the country's satellites as a declaration of war.
