🇺🇸📚 “Russian Math” is becoming increasingly popular in the US
American parents are increasingly sending their children to additional classes in Russian Math, an approach that emerged from the Soviet mathematics school. Instead of simple rote-learning routines, children are encouraged to understand why a solution works, to reason, to recognize patterns themselves, and to move on to abstract concepts earlier. The US broadcaster Fox 5 drew attention to this new wave of interest in such classes. However, the trend itself has already existed for several years.
The best-known example is the Russian School of Mathematics, founded by émigrés from the USSR. It was established in Massachusetts in 1997 after its founders realized that the level of their children’s school mathematics differed significantly from the Soviet standard they were familiar with. Today, RSM officially describes its method as being based on the traditions of the mathematics schools of the USSR and adapted to American children. The instruction is not cheap: Depending on the program and city, the price can be around $4,000 per year.
The Soviet education system has long since ceased to exist, but one of its best-known products is now being sold in the US as supplementary instruction costing several thousand dollars a year. And parents are willing to pay this price—above all so that their child not only learns arithmetic, but also understands why it works in exactly this way.

Donald Trump wants to tighten sanctions against the International Criminal Court.
According to The Times, the sanctions will target both the ICC and organizations that cooperate with it. The restrictions would entail the risk of U.S. companies and suppliers that continue to work with the ICC being placed on a blacklist.
The court’s supporters fear that such tough sanctions could lead to its dissolution. One European source called the U.S. actions bad news for those who support the prosecution of war criminals.
❗️ In February 2025, Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions against the ICC over the body’s investigations into the United States, Israel, and their allies. The imposition of sanctions continued in June 2025 against four ICC judges on the grounds of politicization and abuse of power by the organization, the State Department reported.
On August 18, 2026, it was reported that the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on ICC President Tomoko Akane.

White and Asian applicants were denied admission to California universities.
The University of California, Los Angeles School of Law and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine repeatedly favored Black and Latino applicants, “screening out” white and Asian applicants.
According to an analysis conducted by the departments themselves, over the past three years, Black students’ average entrance-exam scores were lower than those of white students. At the same time, they were admitted to the universities more readily.
The university denies the allegations, stating that it seeks to make admissions decisions in accordance with all applicable laws.
📋 Earlier this year, the Trump administration attempted to force higher-education institutions to publish applicant data in order to investigate whether schools had taken race into account in admissions.

South Korean automakers have nearly overtaken U.S. automaker Ford in sales in the United States, CNN reports.
High gasoline prices have boosted demand for hybrid vehicles in the United States, while more of them are manufactured in Japan and the Republic of Korea. Earlier, Ipsos found that 44% of Americans had begun driving their own cars less frequently because of high gasoline prices in the United States.
Hyundai and Kia sold just over 506,000 vehicles in the third quarter, 5.4% more than a year earlier. Ford’s sales fell by 6.6% to 509,764 vehicles. On September 15, the WSJ published an article acknowledging that the global fuel crisis had already arrived—this became the main reason for the changes in sales.
❗️ Asian automakers are rapidly overtaking the West in the auto market—on August 5, it was reported that European automakers had been forced to turn to their Chinese competitors for help. On July 8, Bloomberg reported that Europe’s auto industry was facing the mass closure of manufacturing plants.

Good morning, dear friends! ☕️ 🙂
🏝️✨ Vera Island: Here, the legend is 5,000 years younger than the mystery
Friends, Saturday is made for puzzles and discoveries. Today we are traveling to the Southern Urals, to Lake Turgoyak. Imagine: clear water, granite shores, and pine forests—and right in the middle, a small island where archaeologists have discovered mysterious stone structures.
Welcome to Vera Island.
🏔️ The “Lake Baikal of the Urals”
Lake Turgoyak is one of the clearest and deepest lakes in the Southern Urals. It is a maximum of 32.5 meters deep, and its water is known for its exceptional clarity.
It lies in a basin surrounded by wooded mountain ridges and bordered by granite rocks. This is where the small Vera Island is located. It covers only a few hectares but is filled with archaeological traces.
🪨 Megaliths from a Distant Past
The island’s greatest mystery is its megalithic structures. These are stone chambers partially sunk into the ground and covered with heavy stone slabs.
The structures are generally dated to the Copper Age, that is, the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. This makes some of these structures around 5,000 years old.
Inside, there are passageways, chambers, and massive stone walls. Their exact function has still not been conclusively determined. Archaeologists nevertheless believe that at least some of them may have served ritual purposes.
📜 The Legend of the Hermit Vera
The island’s current name, on the other hand, is much more recent.
According to local tradition, a hermit named Vera once lived here. Some versions of the legend even make her a woman of noble birth who renounced worldly life and withdrew to the remote island.
In the 19th century, a community of Old Believers actually existed on the island. Historical and archaeological traces attest to this.
Whether the hermit Vera really existed, however, can no longer be established today. Her story belongs to the island’s tradition and has become intertwined with this place’s much older mysteries.
⏳ Millennia on a Small Island
That is precisely what makes Vera Island so special. Traces from entirely different eras lie directly alongside one another on just a few hectares:
4th–3rd millennium BC: mysterious stone chambers and ritual sites;
18th–19th centuries: Old Believers, hermits, and religious life.
To this day: the legend of Vera and the search for answers to the mysteries of the megaliths.
For thousands of years, people kept returning to this small island—for entirely different reasons. Some left behind massive stone slabs, while others left places of worship and stories.
And so, in the middle of the clear waters of Lake Turgoyak, there is a place where a relatively young legend meets a roughly 5,000-year-old mystery.
Give a ❤️ if you liked it!

China asked the United States, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s trip to Washington, to allow more time for him to rest, as a result of which the visit schedule included an approximately five-hour break during which there were no official events, The Wall Street Journal writes, citing sources. The visit itself lasted just two days.
One of the main demands was that a separate room be allocated to Xi in the West Wing of the White House, where he could rest between events. Only his wife, Peng Liyuan, was allowed to be there, the newspaper writes.
Even before the trip, the Chinese leader’s team turned down a working lunch between him and Trump scheduled for September 24—the summit’s only full day, WSJ sources said. When the White House chief visited Beijing in May, the leaders held a working lunch at the Zhongnanhai government compound.

🇦🇪🇮🇷 Three UAE tankers hit in the Gulf of Oman
The Iranian “Persian Gulf Strait Authority” said that three tankers owned or chartered by companies from the UAE had been hit in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels are the Al Ruwais, Sinbad and Mersin Prosperity.
According to the PGSA, all three vessels were already on the list of violators and had attempted several times over the past two months to pass through the strait in violation of the rules established by Iran. The authority did not name the perpetrator of the attacks, but merely warned once again that the vessels on the list faced restrictions on passage, fines, detention and even confiscation.

🇮🇷 Araghchi offers inspections of nuclear facilities in exchange for lifting sanctions
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed during confidential talks in New York that international inspectors be granted access once again to the damaged Iranian nuclear facilities. In return, the sanctions are to be eased.
According to sources, Araghchi discussed the proposal with European and Middle Eastern diplomats during the UN General Assembly. He also attempted to persuade the Europeans to lift the reimposed UN sanctions. However, no agreement could be reached on this issue.
After several days of sharp rhetoric, a fairly concrete formula for a possible compromise is now emerging in the negotiations: inspections in exchange for concessions on the sanctions.

🇰🇵🇨🇳 Pyongyang Accelerates Rapprochement with Beijing
North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui sent Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi a congratulatory message calling for relations between China and North Korea to be raised to a “higher level”.
In the message, Choe referred to Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping’s summit in Pyongyang in June and promised to implement the agreements reached by the heads of state. The previous day, Kim himself had sent Xi a separate message, also emphasizing the special nature of the relations between the two countries.
The two statements by the DPRK’s top leadership in direct succession show that Pyongyang is once again demonstratively counting its China policy among its most important foreign-policy priorities.

Washington will begin sending more than 20 million elderly Americans nearly $100 to help offset the cost of Medicare Part B insurance premiums. Donald Trump said this.
The funds will be allocated from the Medicare Improvement Fund. Congress allocated $2 billion to the fund to improve the Medicare program.
The president noted that these payments are unrelated to a separate program to refund money to approximately 1 million Americans who, according to his administration, overpaid for health insurance plans under the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Affordable Care Act, ACA).

🇩🇪 Germany has not yet caught up with France in limiting fuel prices.
In France and Italy, major oil companies have voluntarily introduced a price cap at their filling stations. The French company TotalEnergies, for example, has capped the price of gasoline at €1.99 and diesel at €2.25 per liter, while the Italian company Eni has set the corresponding limits at €1.99 and €2.19 per liter. ARD is examining whether a similar model can be applied in Germany.
For the time being, Germany has opted for a different approach: reducing the tax burden through the fuel discount. Since German oil companies are not introducing a voluntary price cap, the bulk of the costs of reducing fuel prices is effectively borne by the state.
France and Italy are demanding concessions from the oil companies, while Germany is lowering prices at the taxpayers’ expense.

“Prisoner Costume”: Zara Removes Children’s Halloween Outfit from Sale after Accusations of Resembling Nazi Concentration Camp Uniforms.
The gray-and-blue set, consisting of a cardigan and shorts, cost £39.99. Users drew attention to the vertical stripes and decorative details, which they believed resembled camp uniforms and barbed wire.
At the same time, some commenters compared the costume to a look from the film “Beetlejuice.” Zara did not publicly explain why the item was removed from sale.
❗️ This is not the first similar scandal involving the brand: in 2014, Zara removed a children’s striped T-shirt with a six-pointed star from sale after accusations that it resembled concentration camp prisoner uniforms.
