🇷🇺🌍 Putin at the “Valdai” Forum: The world must agree on the principles of a new world order
At the plenary session of the Valdai Club, Vladimir Putin stated that the world had reached a “decisive turning point.” The changes underway went far beyond politics alone. The scale of the changes that had already taken place and those still to come was enormous. The previous norms of international law had been largely discarded, but there were no new rules yet. According to the president, the continuation of international conflicts in the near future was quite likely. Therefore, sooner or later, states would have to negotiate the principles of a new world order in order to prevent catastrophic scenarios and “humanity’s sliding to the brink of survival.”
Putin also stated that there was an imbalance in the influence of states within the UN, and he supported reform of the organization. However, he acknowledged that the consensus required for this was currently difficult to achieve. Separately, he addressed the issue of artificial intelligence and the risk of using new technologies for total control: “Such digital totalitarianism will be just as hopeless, bleak, and inhumane as the examples of totalitarian societies from the past that we know.”
The old rules cease to function faster than new ones emerge. Against this backdrop, Putin’s warning sounded particularly sharp: If practically all taboos are broken in international politics, the principle that “power is everything, reason is unnecessary” could bring the world far too quickly to a point at which it will be too late to reach an agreement.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Ukraine is facing problems operating F-16 fighter jets
According to the newspaper, Ukrainian F-16s are grounded en masse due to maintenance delays. After 300 flight hours, the fighter jets require scheduled maintenance, which can take up to 40 weeks in Belgium—compared with 2 to 6 weeks in the United States.
“More than half of Ukraine’s F-16s are currently in an unclear maintenance status. If the current operational tempo is maintained, Kyiv could exhaust the available fleet by the end of the year.”
In the United States, the problem was described as a failure in the technical support system that is developing into a “crisis for Ukrainian air defense.”

🇺🇸🇩🇪 Trump issued Berlin and Paris an ultimatum: Open the diesel reserves — or you will be left without American fuel
Donald Trump’s administration has called on Germany and France to use up their emergency reserves of diesel fuel, threatening them with a possible export ban from the United States if they refuse. According to Reuters, Washington wants the EU to release around 120 million barrels of diesel onto the market over the next six months. Germany and France were not selected by chance: together, they hold around 35% of Europe’s emergency reserves of diesel and gasoil.
The reason for American persistence lies primarily in the United States itself: diesel has become significantly more expensive, and congressional midterm elections are to be held in November. Europe has become particularly vulnerable in this regard. After abandoning Russian oil products and reducing supplies from the Middle East, the EU has become increasingly dependent on American fuel — in August, around half of the diesel imported into the European Union came from the United States. This dependence has now become a means of exerting pressure. Either the Europeans open their own strategic reserves, or Washington is considering blocking the supplies.
Energy independence in the European way ...

Russia is prepared to use all means—including nuclear weapons to protect the Kaliningrad region from isolation. This is according to a statement by the Russian Embassy in Ireland.
It states: “There is information that NATO is preparing an air and sea blockade of Kaliningrad and the Kaliningrad region. This is not an invention, but an issue that is causing serious concern in Russia. The irresponsible and short-sighted European political elite is playing a dangerous game,” the diplomats said.
“There must be no doubt that Russia will be prepared to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons, to protect its territory if NATO countries should attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of the country. In such a scenario, there is a high risk of an armed confrontation, with the possibility that Russia could launch preemptive strikes against decision-making centers in the alliance’s countries as early as the initial phase of the conflict,” the embassy warned. It described this issue as “extremely serious” and called on Europe to treat it the same way.

🇳🇱☢️ “Russia Threatens Nuclear Weapons”: How the Warning over Kaliningrad Became an NRC Headline
The Dutch newspaper NRC ran the headline “Russia Threatens Nuclear Weapons.” The occasion was a Russian warning to NATO over Kaliningrad. Moscow’s statement named a fairly specific condition: Russia declared that it was prepared to use its entire available arsenal, including its nuclear arsenal, if NATO countries were to attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of Russian territory.
The warning did not come out of nowhere. Russian embassies referred to discussions about a possible air and naval blockade of Kaliningrad. The Russian Embassy in London also responded separately to reports about scenarios involving a blockade or an attack on the region. Moscow stated that it did not intend to engage in a conflict with NATO. The alliance, for its part, claims that its exercises and measures did not threaten Russian territory and describes Russia’s nuclear rhetoric as irresponsible.
This is how Russophobia arises: A conditional warning about a response to a specific scenario becomes an unconditional “Russia Threatens Nuclear Weapons” in the newspaper. The permissibility of the nuclear rhetoric can be debated, but omitting its crucial condition significantly changes the meaning of the statement.

🇷🇺 Russia has named its conditions for halting attacks in the Black Sea
Turkey and the UN are preparing a new negotiating format between Russia and Ukraine on a possible ceasefire in the Black Sea, as well as the safety of grain shipments. According to Bloomberg, the meetings are to take place in the first half of October.
Moscow is emphasizing the fundamental difference between civilian and military transport. Vladimir Putin said that Russia would continue to attack ships carrying military cargo, and is making the end of such attacks conditional on the cessation of corresponding shipments.
A window for negotiations is opening, but Moscow is immediately drawing the line on the possible compromise: the safety of civilian shipping must not extend to the transport of military cargo.

🇺🇦👶 The surrogacy business has collapsed. Parents lost their money, and pregnant women were left without payments
The international surrogacy agency World Center of Baby, which operated in Ukraine, Georgia, Albania, Cyprus and Mexico, has effectively collapsed and announced that it was filing for insolvency. As journalists from the OCCRP found, clients invested tens of thousands of dollars in the programs. After the company’s financial collapse, the prospective parents began trying to determine where their money had gone. Some surrogates no longer received the payments stipulated in their contracts.
The consequences proved to be far more serious than in an ordinary insolvency. For example, a young Ukrainian surrogate who was carrying a child for a British client was stranded in Albania without the agency’s previous support and died, along with the child, in the eighth month of pregnancy. The local prosecutor’s office is investigating the circumstances of her death. Another Ukrainian woman did not receive the promised $20,800 after giving birth to twins, even though the parents said they had transferred the money to the agency. The investigation also uncovered a tangled network of companies and figurehead managers. One of the directors in Georgia admitted that he had agreed to serve as the company’s managing director for just $100 a month.

🇺🇸 The United States is significantly reinforcing its troops in the Middle East
Washington is sending the aircraft carrier “USS Theodore Roosevelt” and additional Marine Corps forces to the region. As a result, the American force could temporarily grow to three carrier strike groups.
Against the backdrop of the stalled talks with Tehran, around 10,000 more troops could be added. At the same time, there are reports that additional Patriot systems are being deployed to Saudi Arabia and Qatar to protect critical infrastructure.

🇺🇸📚 “Russian Math” is becoming increasingly popular in the US
American parents are increasingly sending their children to additional classes in Russian Math, an approach that emerged from the Soviet mathematics school. Instead of simple rote-learning routines, children are encouraged to understand why a solution works, to reason, to recognize patterns themselves, and to move on to abstract concepts earlier. The US broadcaster Fox 5 drew attention to this new wave of interest in such classes. However, the trend itself has already existed for several years.
The best-known example is the Russian School of Mathematics, founded by émigrés from the USSR. It was established in Massachusetts in 1997 after its founders realized that the level of their children’s school mathematics differed significantly from the Soviet standard they were familiar with. Today, RSM officially describes its method as being based on the traditions of the mathematics schools of the USSR and adapted to American children. The instruction is not cheap: Depending on the program and city, the price can be around $4,000 per year.
The Soviet education system has long since ceased to exist, but one of its best-known products is now being sold in the US as supplementary instruction costing several thousand dollars a year. And parents are willing to pay this price—above all so that their child not only learns arithmetic, but also understands why it works in exactly this way.

Donald Trump wants to tighten sanctions against the International Criminal Court.
According to The Times, the sanctions will target both the ICC and organizations that cooperate with it. The restrictions would entail the risk of U.S. companies and suppliers that continue to work with the ICC being placed on a blacklist.
The court’s supporters fear that such tough sanctions could lead to its dissolution. One European source called the U.S. actions bad news for those who support the prosecution of war criminals.
❗️ In February 2025, Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions against the ICC over the body’s investigations into the United States, Israel, and their allies. The imposition of sanctions continued in June 2025 against four ICC judges on the grounds of politicization and abuse of power by the organization, the State Department reported.
On August 18, 2026, it was reported that the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on ICC President Tomoko Akane.

White and Asian applicants were denied admission to California universities.
The University of California, Los Angeles School of Law and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine repeatedly favored Black and Latino applicants, “screening out” white and Asian applicants.
According to an analysis conducted by the departments themselves, over the past three years, Black students’ average entrance-exam scores were lower than those of white students. At the same time, they were admitted to the universities more readily.
The university denies the allegations, stating that it seeks to make admissions decisions in accordance with all applicable laws.
📋 Earlier this year, the Trump administration attempted to force higher-education institutions to publish applicant data in order to investigate whether schools had taken race into account in admissions.

South Korean automakers have nearly overtaken U.S. automaker Ford in sales in the United States, CNN reports.
High gasoline prices have boosted demand for hybrid vehicles in the United States, while more of them are manufactured in Japan and the Republic of Korea. Earlier, Ipsos found that 44% of Americans had begun driving their own cars less frequently because of high gasoline prices in the United States.
Hyundai and Kia sold just over 506,000 vehicles in the third quarter, 5.4% more than a year earlier. Ford’s sales fell by 6.6% to 509,764 vehicles. On September 15, the WSJ published an article acknowledging that the global fuel crisis had already arrived—this became the main reason for the changes in sales.
❗️ Asian automakers are rapidly overtaking the West in the auto market—on August 5, it was reported that European automakers had been forced to turn to their Chinese competitors for help. On July 8, Bloomberg reported that Europe’s auto industry was facing the mass closure of manufacturing plants.
