🇰🇿🇩🇪 Tokayev in Berlin: Putin is an “outstanding statesman”

At the joint press conference with Friedrich Merz, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev spoke very positively about Vladimir Putin, surprisingly so for the German public. In response to a question about Ukraine, he said: “I have a very good relationship with President Putin. I consider him, one might say, an outstanding statesman.” The appearance took place directly at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin.

Tokayev did not stop there, however. In his original Russian speech, he described Putin as the “most acceptable political figure” and added: “However strange this may sound to you, that is how it is, in my view, for Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Europe and the whole world.” Tokayev also explained that he knew the Russian president well and considered him someone who possessed the necessary qualities to lead a large country with a complex history. At the same time, the Kazakh president separately emphasized the need to end the hostilities in Ukraine and comply with the Charter of the United Nations.

All of this took place in Berlin, where the German chancellor continues to push for new arms deliveries to Ukraine.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that in the coming years, the United Kingdom would attempt to rejoin the European Union.

“Brexit did not give us control. We lost the control we had over our economy, as a decade of low growth weakened our position. And we lost control over immigration. <…> I cannot honestly say that we are satisfied with the current state of affairs. Brexit has done more harm than good. We need to restore higher growth rates and ensure Britain’s prosperity,” he said on September 29 at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool.

Why Burnham said this and how possible a return is — in RBC’s article.

At the White House, they thanked God for Donald Trump — prayers were said for the American leader during an event dedicated to Hispanic Heritage Month.

"We thank You (God — Ed.) for President Trump. We ask You, Lord, at this hour to increase the spirit of wisdom in his life along with revelation, in the name of Jesus Christ. And President Trump, I ask the Lord right now to anoint you with fresh anointing oil so that you may lead this nation forward in the name of Jesus Christ," said Pasquale Urrabazo, a representative of the Christian organization Beautiful Life Global, together with his wife, as they recited this prayer.

🌊 Lake Jack London: How an American Writer Came to Magadan

Friends, today we are heading to the far northeast of Russia, to the Kolyma region. There, amid mountains and larch forests, lies Lake Jack London, one of the country’s most picturesque lakes. In autumn, it is surrounded by golden slopes, while the peaks are already covered in snow.

What is unusual about this place, however, is not only the landscape, but also its name.

Welcome to Lake Jack London.

🏔️
A Lake Like a Painting

Lake Jack London is located in the Yagodnoye District of Magadan Oblast at an elevation of about 800 meters above sea level. It is more than 10 kilometers long, up to 50 meters deep, and has an area of approximately 14.4 square kilometers.

The surroundings are almost untouched. There is larch taiga, mountains, and crystal-clear water. During the short summer, it can become surprisingly warm here, while winter temperatures fall far below zero. The lake is of glacial origin and remains very cold even in summer.

📖 The Legend of the Book on the Shore

But why does a remote lake in the Magadan region bear the name of an American writer who himself was never here?

The best-known legend sounds almost too good to be true: geologists are said to have found a book by Jack London on the shore—supposedly his novel “Martin Eden.” They then allegedly decided to name the lake after the writer.

The story is still widely told today. However, there is no documentary evidence for it.

🗺️ The More Likely Story

The more likely explanation is less fairy-tale-like, but no less interesting.

The geologist Pyotr Skornyakov, who worked in the Kolyma region in the 1930s, was a great admirer of Jack London’s works. His stories about people in the wilderness of the American North were also very popular among Soviet geologists and researchers at the time.

Skornyakov is associated with the idea of naming geographical features in the area after London. Eventually, the name stuck for the lake and appeared on maps.

Thus, the name of an American writer became a permanent part of the geography of Russia’s northeast.

🏝️ Vera Island

The small island of Vera lies in the middle of the lake. For decades, it was home to a meteorological station—a tiny outpost amid the nearly uninhabited mountain landscape.

The island and the surrounding waters enhance the unusual character of the place: a lonely lake between mountains, far from larger settlements and shaped by ice and snow for many months of the year.

🏞️ Today: a Protected Landscape

Today, Lake Jack London is part of a protected natural area and is known primarily for its extraordinary landscape.

Mountains, larch forests, islands, and clear water form a landscape that is more reminiscent of Alaska or the Canadian Yukon—which, coincidentally, is the very world Jack London wrote about in many of his most famous stories.

Thus, this remote lake bears more than just his name. The landscape itself seems almost like a setting from one of his books.

The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) conducted a test to detect low-yield nuclear explosions, the agency’s press service reported.

The study was conducted in Tunnel R at the Nevada National Security Site using chemical explosives and radioactive tracers. The data collected is planned to be used to test scientific models and refine algorithms as part of U.S. efforts to detect nuclear explosions.

The NNSA press service notes that the experiment focused particularly on expanding U.S. capabilities to detect a “decoupled” explosion.

Authorities in Tennessee were unable to execute Krista Pike for a 1995 murder despite administering two doses of the lethal drug. A death-penalty expert called the incident an unprecedented failure, reports the Associated Press.

According to Pike’s attorneys, after the lethal injection, the woman “was alive and snoring loudly.” The death-row inmate was taken from the prison by ambulance.

The execution of 50-year-old Krista Pike, who was convicted of murdering a fellow student when she was 18, was scheduled for the morning of September 30. Had the execution taken place, she would have become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.

An appeals court halted the administration of the lethal injection just one hour before the procedure was to begin, but several hours later the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that decision. As a result, authorities administered two doses of pentobarbital to Pike, her attorneys said.

🇩🇪 Three Reforms at Once: Long-Term Care, Pensions and Healthcare

The government under Friedrich Merz is entering the autumn with three difficult social reforms: long-term care, the pension system and the healthcare system. And in practically every area, there are already considerable differences of opinion within the coalition of the CDU/CSU and SPD.

The most urgent problem is long-term care insurance: The public funds expect a deficit of around €4.4 billion in 2026 and €7.5 billion in 2027.

At the same time, the government must stabilize health insurance and reform the pension system—against the backdrop of an aging population and a declining number of people financing these systems through their contributions.

This autumn will show how far the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition is actually prepared to go in reforming the German welfare state.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will join the leadership of a new Pentagon structure responsible for studying future ways of warfare called “Project Meridian.” U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said this, Axios reports.

“We are harnessing a unique source of American advantage that our adversaries do not have: our innovators, our senior leaders, and our technologists—big thinkers and doers who will forecast a creative solution for tomorrow’s conflicts,” Hegseth said, speaking at a Marine Corps base in Virginia.

According to the secretary, “Project Meridian” is not intended to create new policy documents. Instead, the project will study “the domains we must conquer and the capabilities we must master.”

Donald Trump instructed the development of measures to reduce the populations of ticks and certain mosquito species in the District of Columbia, where Washington is located. The head of state’s order was published on the White House website.

The document is titled: “Eradicating Disease Vectors and Restoring the Joy of Outdoor Recreation.”

Under the order, the secretary of the interior, the secretary of agriculture, and the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency must “develop and implement a campaign in the District of Columbia with the aim of reducing the populations of Asian tiger mosquitoes, Egyptian mosquitoes, and other invasive mosquitoes by 90% by 2028, as well as reducing the tick population by 50%, with further reductions where possible.”

🇺🇸🇮🇱 Republicans blocked a Democratic-sponsored resolution in the US Senate on human rights violations in the West Bank

Republicans in the US Senate blocked a resolution that would have required Donald Trump’s administration to submit to Congress a report on the human rights situation in the West Bank. The vote ended 47 to 51.

Among other things, the document required the State Department to report on investigations into the deaths of US citizens at the hands of Israeli settlers or security forces, as well as on US citizens held in Israeli prisons. The resolution itself would not have automatically ended aid to Israel, but failure to submit the required report could have led to restrictions.

The vote largely followed party lines: Almost all Republicans voted against it, while almost all Democrats voted in favor.

Tennessee authorities halted executions for a year after a condemned woman who was given two lethal injections survived.

Christa Gail Pike was found guilty of a murder committed back in 1995. Yesterday, she was supposed to become the first woman executed in the state in more than 200 years.

She was given two doses of pentobarbital, but survived and, her lawyers claim, snored loudly.

As a result, Pike’s defense urgently petitioned the court to stop the execution because of “unjustified suffering,” after which the condemned woman was taken to hospital.

Local authorities are now conducting inspections—for, as they put it, local residents expect executions to be not only lawful but also effective.
