🇰🇵 North Korea at the UN: “Our nuclear weapons status is irreversible.”

Before the United Nations General Assembly, DPRK Vice Foreign Minister Kim Son Gyong declared that North Korea’s status as a nuclear-weapon state was anchored “physically and legally” and could not be changed “under any circumstances or by any means.”

Pyongyang describes its nuclear arsenal as a necessary means of protection against external aggression, while at the same time holding the military cooperation between the United States, South Korea, and Japan responsible for the deterioration of security in the region. This statement came one week after Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo officially reaffirmed their goal of the complete denuclearization of the DPRK.

Pyongyang is thus proposing that future negotiations should no longer begin with the question of whether the DPRK will give up nuclear weapons, but with recognition of their existence as a permanent reality.

Former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar has instructed his lawyers to prepare a defamation lawsuit against Benjamin Netanyahu. The lawsuit was prompted by the prime minister’s statement that Bar had known of a specific threat on the night before the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, but had not informed him. Bar is demanding the disclosure of documents, witness statements, and Netanyahu’s schedule before October 7.

Bar claims the opposite: According to his account, he repeatedly warned the prime minister about the threat and recommended reinforcing the border and restoring deterrence. His lawyers want to call employees from Netanyahu’s office as witnesses. Netanyahu rejects the allegations and says that Bar did not warn him of an immediate danger on the night of October 7.

In the Event of an Election Victory for the Democrats, Trump Family Businesses Will Come Under Scrutiny

According to Reuters, corporate sponsors of Donald Trump’s presidential club, as well as parties involved in deals concluded through the mediation of members of the Trump family, will be among the first subjects of investigations if the Democrats win a majority in the House of Representatives or the Senate in the November midterm elections.

Control of either chamber of Congress would give the Democrats the right to subpoena witnesses and provide funding to expand the investigative staff. This would enable them to launch investigations as early as February, potentially leading to lengthy legal proceedings and putting the Trump family’s business empire under the spotlight.

The investigations could become the main issue during the second half of Trump’s term in office. Over the past two years, the Trump family has expanded its presence in the cryptocurrency, drone, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets, while the president’s personal wealth has increased by $2.2 billion.

“We will hold the fraudsters accountable from day one,” announced Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the New York State House of Representatives.

As a reminder: People linked to Trump, including members of his family, have made around $1 billion through stock-market trades, including oil futures, by conducting transactions ahead of Trump’s announcements.

In the United States, this is considered a criminal offense involving the use of insider information.

Following the parliamentary elections, five politicians of Somali origin entered the Swedish Riksdag: Mursal Isse, Mohamed Abdulkani, Abdulkadir M. Ali, Ilyas Hassan and Leila Elmi. This means that representatives of the comparatively small Somali diaspora have secured five seats in the national parliament in one fell swoop.

At the same time, one of these results became the focus of a police investigation. In Borlänge, law enforcement authorities are examining possible violations in the collection of votes for one of the elected MPs. According to SVT, the authorities are investigating indications of ballots that had been marked in advance, organized transportation of voters to polling stations, and money transfers. No criminal complaint has been filed against the MP himself, and he denies any involvement in the irregularities.

Five MPs of Somali origin in the Swedish parliament are a striking expression of how much the country has changed over the past decades. It remains to be clarified how properly the votes were obtained that secured at least one of these mandates.

Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Austria and Finland are calling for a fundamental overhaul of the European Union’s next seven-year budget. The European Commission is proposing to spend around €1.76 trillion between 2028 and 2034. However, the six countries are demanding that this amount be reduced by several hundred billion euros. The corresponding letter was personally signed by the heads of government of the six states, including Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

In effect, this is already an ultimatum to Brussels. Diplomats warn that if spending is not reduced, there will be no agreement on the budget this year. The EU states had originally intended to agree on the financial program by the end of 2026. Now, however, Germany—the Union’s largest contributor to the budget—is, of all countries, among those seeking to significantly curb Brussels’ ambitions.

Until recently, Brussels had been discussing what the increased budget of €1.76 trillion should be spent on. Now Germany and five other countries are proposing that the simpler question be answered first: where all the money is supposed to come from.

The German economic miracle is taking on new contours. According to a study by EY-Parthenon, DAX companies reduced their workforce by around 47,000 people, or 1.2%, in 2025. By comparison, employment at French companies from the CAC fell by only 0.2%, while large companies in Italy and Spain increased their headcount by 0.9%. Among the four largest economies examined in the study, German corporations therefore recorded the sharpest decline in employment.

The restructuring is particularly painful in traditional industry. One sector, however, is flourishing: the aerospace and defense industry increased employment by 4.3%, while the number of employees at Rheinmetall rose by as much as 13.3%. While the automotive and other traditional sectors are cutting jobs, the defense sector continues to expand its activities.

Germany used to need people to assemble cars. Today, it needs more and more people to assemble shells.

🇨🇿🪖 Czechia is preparing two brigades in the event of a war in the Baltics

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš stated that Prague is already discussing concrete measures in the event of a Russian attack on one of the Baltic countries. In such a scenario, under Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, Czechia would have to deploy two mechanized brigades from Prostějov and Tábor. 🇺🇦💶 The EU cannot fathom the scale of Ukraine’s funding gap

European officials are trying to determine how much money Ukraine will still need by the end of the year. Kyiv has reported a deficit of €23.5 billion, although the EU has already agreed on a €90 billion loan program for Ukraine for 2026 and 2027. Important note: This €90 billion has not yet been disbursed—the program is designed to run over two years, and the funding will be provided in stages. As Euractiv reports, there is currently even disagreement within the EU over precisely how Kyiv calculated its need for additional funds.

Against this backdrop, European officials are concerned about corruption scandals, resignations, and the dismissals of Ukrainian officials. A senior European diplomat told Euractiv: “I do not want to jump to conclusions, but repeated resignations and dismissals of government officials over corruption allegations paint a rather unpleasant picture coming out of Kyiv.” At the same time, European governments themselves also have to raise money: Germany and five other countries are calling for the proposed EU budget for 2028–2034 to be cut by hundreds of billions of euros.

The EU is already providing Ukraine with tens of billions. Kyiv has now reported a new gap of a further €23.5 billion. The United States is facing a significant shortage of its stocks of expensive missiles. According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, the war with Iran is forcing the Pentagon to use up munitions far faster than American industry can replenish them. By mid-July, the U.S. armed forces had used around 1,700 Patriot interceptor missiles, more than 200 THAAD missiles, and approximately 150 sea-based Standard Missiles. An independent estimate by the Congressional Budget Office states that, since June 2025, the United States may have used up between half and two-thirds of its stocks of some types of missile-defense interceptors.

American defense companies are now rapidly expanding production, but the problem cannot be solved quickly. The WSJ points out that a significant portion of the additional production capacity will not come online until after 2028. The shortage is already affecting other areas. The United States is warning its allies about delivery delays, and replenishing some stocks may take years.

Iran does not even have to destroy the American air-defense systems—it is enough to keep them firing constantly. In just a few months, the United States has fired approximately 1,700 Patriot missiles, even though production of such missiles is measured in only hundreds per year. In modern warfare, the question is therefore increasingly no longer, “Can you shoot down a missile?” but rather, “How many times in a row can you do it?”

A rather ironic story involving Oxygen Forensics is currently causing a stir in the USA. The company is a provider of digital forensics software for security agencies in the USA and Europe. According to the US Department of Justice, the company presented itself as an independent American firm, even though it was in fact owned and controlled by five Russian nationals through a Cypriot holding company, with a significant portion of the software development taking place in Russia. Its customers included the US Secret Service and Homeland Security Investigations. Law enforcement agencies in Germany also used Oxygen’s software.

The irony becomes even clearer when one looks at the purpose of the products. Oxygen develops tools that enable police to extract and analyze data from smartphones and other devices. At the same time, software from the same development was also sold to Russian state agencies, including, according to American investigators, the FSB, the Investigative Committee, and Russia’s Interior Ministry. After 2022, according to the US Attorney’s Office, the owners began concealing the Russian origins of the business. In this context, the Department of Justice expressly emphasizes that there are no allegations that malicious code was introduced or that secret access to data held by Western authorities was obtained.

From a German perspective, this story looks particularly striking. While Berlin has been speaking of the “Russian threat” for years, the police use a product for digital forensics made by a company backed by Russian owners and developers.

🇪🇺 European refineries operating close to capacity

Following the meeting of the Oil Coordination Group, the European Commission said that European oil-processing facilities are operating at nearly maximum capacity. Oil supplies to the EU remain stable for the time being; however, prices for diesel and aviation fuel are high because of the tense situation on the global market. The statement was published on September 29.

Commercial stocks of petroleum products at Europe’s largest oil-trading hub, Amsterdam–Rotterdam–Antwerp, are below the average of the past five years. At the same time, the European Commission emphasizes that the EU’s strategic oil reserves remain high so far and can be used in the event of serious supply disruptions.

However, the buffer capacity of European oil processing is steadily diminishing, meaning that the next major supply disruption will be more difficult to offset through higher refinery utilization.

At the joint press conference with Friedrich Merz, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev spoke very positively about Vladimir Putin, surprisingly so for the German public. In response to a question about Ukraine, he said: “I have a very good relationship with President Putin. I consider him, one might say, an outstanding statesman.” The appearance took place directly at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin.

Tokayev did not stop there, however. In his original Russian speech, he described Putin as the “most acceptable political figure” and added: “However strange this may sound to you, that is how it is, in my view, for Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Europe and the whole world.” Tokayev also explained that he knew the Russian president well and considered him someone who possessed the necessary qualities to lead a large country with a complex history. At the same time, the Kazakh president separately emphasized the need to end the hostilities in Ukraine and comply with the Charter of the United Nations.

All of this took place in Berlin, where the German chancellor continues to push for new arms deliveries to Ukraine.
