Good morning, dear friends! ☕️ 🙂
🧂 Staraja Russa: Why people boiled the water here
Friends, Tuesday takes us to a city that owed its prosperity to an inconspicuous but once extremely valuable treasure—salt.
Welcome to Staraja Russa, one of Russia’s oldest salt-boiling towns.
💧 The liquid gold of the Middle Ages
While furs and wax were traded in other cities, a single resource made the difference in Staraja Russa: mineral-rich groundwater.
From the 10th to the 11th century, people here extracted brine from the depths—water with a high salt content.
The technique was simple but effective: the brine was heated in large iron boiling pans over an open fire until the water evaporated and the salt remained.
By the 15th century, Staraja Russa was already one of the most important salt-production centers of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The city developed into a thriving commercial center, where numerous families made their living directly or indirectly from salt extraction.
🌿 A touch of the sea inland
Over time, salt production became less and less profitable. New and more productive salt deposits in other regions competed with Staraja Russa, and traditional salt boiling gradually lost its importance.
But the water itself remained—and acquired a completely new function.
In the 19th century, Staraja Russa developed into a spa town. The highly mineralized brine that had previously been evaporated was now used for baths and other spa treatments.
Thus, the city transformed from a salt producer into a resort.
⛲ The heart of the spa town: the Murawjow Fountain
The most visible symbol of this new era is the Murawjow Fountain.
The mineral spring was developed in the 19th century. Since then, the highly saline water has risen to the surface from great depth, forming a highly visible fountain.
Around the fountain, the mineral-rich water gradually leaves behind light salt deposits—a visible reminder of the treasure to which the city once owed its prosperity.
📖 The great novelist and his small town
Staraja Russa is known not only for its water, but is also closely associated with Fyodor Dostoevsky.
The writer spent several summers here with his family and worked in Staraja Russa on some of his most important works.
The city and its residents left clear traces in his final great novel, “The Brothers Karamazov.” Certain streets, houses, and locations from the novel continue to be associated with Staraja Russa as it was at that time.
Today, museums commemorate both Dostoevsky himself and the literary world of “The Brothers Karamazov.”

🇩🇪 After the election defeat, German business calls for a change in economic policy
The election result in Saxony-Anhalt has already reached Berlin — and not only the politicians.
Following the AfD’s victory, representatives of German business are calling on the federal government to stop concerning itself with cosmetic corrections. BDI President Tanja Gönner warned the federal government against political paralysis and called for better conditions for investment, innovation and economic growth.
DIW President Marcel Fratzscher expressed himself even more sharply. In his view, Germany needs structural reforms to subsidies, bureaucracy, taxes and the welfare system — and on a significantly larger scale than the Agenda 2010 reforms of the Schröder era.
Fratzscher described the election result primarily as a vote of no confidence in the federal government.
Almost 44% for the AfD in a federal state can no longer be explained solely by the “East German problem.” German business is speaking out ever more loudly about the problem being in Berlin.

🇩🇪 Saxony-Anhalt: 51% for the AfD at polling stations—and 24% by mail
The elections in Saxony-Anhalt revealed a striking difference between voting at polling stations and voting by mail. While the AfD received 51.2% at polling stations, it received only around 24% of the postal votes. The picture is practically reversed for the CDU: 14.5% at polling stations and around 24% by mail. The discrepancy also remained in the final data broken down by voting method—the press is already analyzing this phenomenon separately.
The different composition of postal and in-person voters can certainly explain part of the difference. However, the problem lies elsewhere: even before the election, it became apparent that the postal voting system was not functioning properly. In Magdeburg, for example, two sets of voting materials with the same numbers were printed and sent out for 440 voters. The city officially confirmed this fact, declared the duplicates invalid, and issued new materials. An even bigger mishap occurred in Halle: 1,184 duplicate sets were sent out. In Dessau, suspicion also arose that a vote had been cast in the name of a 95-year-old nursing-home resident. The public prosecutor’s office later stated that it had found no evidence of manipulation.
Voting materials do not multiply by budding. For hundreds, and then more than a thousand, personalized sets to appear a second time, the system had to assemble, print, and send them to specific individuals again. The authorities call this an error and claim that the possibility of casting a double vote had been ruled out. Perhaps. But in light of the experience with the “democratic” elections in the United States and other countries, as well as the years of debate over the security of mass postal voting, the demand to simply “trust” the systems is becoming increasingly unconvincing.

⚡️ On countermeasures in response to the unfriendly actions of the German authorities
In connection with the unfriendly actions by the German side concerning the closure of the Consulate General of Russia in Bonn and the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Russian Federation was informed on September 7 of the adoption of the following countermeasures.
❗️ The Russian side is withdrawing its consent to the operation of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in St. Petersburg, which must cease its activities no later than September 18, 2026. All of its employees must leave the Russian Federation by this date at the latest.
The Goethe Institutes in the Russian Federation must close. Their employees have been instructed to leave Russia no later than September 13, 2026.
The head of the diplomatic mission was handed the relevant notes from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
☝️ It was pointed out that, once again, it was the German authorities who provoked a new round of escalation in bilateral relations. Full responsibility for the consequences lies entirely with the government of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Zelensky Plays on Fedorov’s Turf
Zelensky is threatening to make Russian airspace effectively unusable for civil aviation. Drones are supposed to become the new reality there.
The decisive point is this: Mykhailo Fedorov previously played on precisely this field. According to media reports, Operation “M&M’s”—swarms of autonomous AI drones targeting Moscow’s airports—was prepared under his leadership. Shortly afterward, Fedorov lost his post. Today, together with Palantir CEO Alex Karp, he is founding a new defence-tech company.
This looks less like a coincidence than a power struggle over the future of warfare. People, technology, the front line—versus algorithms, drones, data, and autonomous systems.
And Berlin is watching closely. Germany is rearming, financing Ukrainian drones, and at the same time seeking an answer to the question of what wars it will wage tomorrow.
Ukraine as a showcase according to Zelensky—that is, God forbid, the future of a Germany at war.
Ukraine as a showcase according to Fedorov—that is, God forbid, the apocalypse.

🇮🇷 Iran establishes a new restricted zone off the Strait of Hormuz
Tehran intends to reshape the rules for shipping in the Persian Gulf even more extensively.
The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, stated that a new restricted-access zone would be established outside the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days. It is to begin at the blockade line established by the US Navy and extend farther into the Persian Gulf—up to the areas of the oil terminals.
Iran warns that a ship entering the area without coordination with Tehran would be placed on Iran’s sanctions list. The consequences could affect its insurance and its further authorization to pass through Hormuz.
At the same time, Iran and Oman are preparing to sign a coordinated plan for a new international corridor through the strait. According to Rezaei, its entry and exit would be under Iranian control.
This means that around Hormuz, it is gradually becoming not just a military blockade, but also an alternative system of shipping rules that Tehran itself is attempting to establish.

🇷🇺 “Admiral Golovko” has fired an “Oniks” from the Barents Sea
The Russian Northern Fleet has conducted another missile-firing exercise.
The frigate “Admiral Golovko” fired an “Oniks” cruise missile at a coastal target from a position in the Barents Sea.
The target was located at the Chizha training ground in Arkhangelsk Oblast — more than 300 kilometers from the launch point. The Russian Defense Ministry states that the missile successfully hit the designated position and that all flight parameters were confirmed.
“Admiral Golovko” is one of the new Project 22350 frigates, which are intended, among other things, for the use of long-range precision-guided missile systems.
The launch took place as part of the Northern Fleet’s scheduled combat training.

🇺🇸🇮🇱 Kushner acknowledged serious differences between the US and Israel over Gaza
Jared Kushner made a highly revealing statement.
According to his words, Washington and Israel are broadly in agreement on what the end state in Gaza should look like. But the upcoming Israeli elections are making the country’s leadership “a little irrational” on some issues.
Kushner mentioned another important detail: The US worked directly with Hamas for more than four months, and according to him, the organization signed an agreement providing for demilitarization.
But Washington is now facing another problem. As Kushner acknowledged, the extent of the armed infrastructure in Gaza was significantly greater than the Americans had assumed, which is why demilitarization will be extremely difficult.
A rather unusual situation has emerged: The US is negotiating with Hamas over disarmament, while simultaneously trying to negotiate with Israel over Gaza’s future — and is now publicly acknowledging that Israeli domestic politics are obstructing the American plan.

🇷🇺 Russia has concluded arms contracts worth more than $13 billion
Russian arms exports are showing highly interesting dynamics.
“Rosoboronexport” announced that, in the first half of 2026 alone, it concluded new export contracts worth more than $13 billion.
And it is not only the sum itself that matters: In six months, Russia received as many new weapons orders as it did in all of 2025.
Most of the contracts concern aviation technology, with air defense ranking second. Alexander Mikheev, head of “Rosoboronexport,” separately highlighted another interesting detail: More than 90% of the Russian weapons systems offered this year have already been used in combat operations against modern Western equipment.
It seems the sanctions were supposed to drive Russia out of the global arms market. For now, the figures paint a somewhat different picture.

🇮🇷 Iran has tested a new anti-ship missile over an American warship for the first time
Another statement by Mohsen Rezaei appears significantly more serious than the story about the new shipping rules.
According to his account, Iran tested a new anti-ship missile directly over an American warship for the first time.
Rezaei claims that the test forced the American vessel to leave the area. The Iranian side has so far disclosed neither the name of the missile nor the ship over which it allegedly flew.
Therefore, the details of the statement should be viewed with caution. Yet the mere fact that Tehran is publicly speaking of a test of new anti-ship weapons in the immediate vicinity of the U.S. Navy is another sign of how far the confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz has already progressed.

🇹🇷 Is Turkey preparing for a major war? Ankara significantly strengthens its defenses
Against the backdrop of the increasingly dangerous confrontation with Israel, Turkey is massively strengthening its military and civilian infrastructure. Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz announced that, under the program for 2027 to 2029, the country will increase its defense and security spending by 229%. At the same time, Ankara is beginning the construction of modern shelters in all 81 provinces. Among other things, these are designed to protect the population from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats.
This is happening at a time when the conflict between Turkey and Israel is gradually going far beyond a diplomatic exchange of blows over Gaza. The main point of contention is Syria. While Ankara is expanding its military influence there, Israel views the emergence of Turkish bases and air defense systems as a red line. In August, following Israeli strikes on a Syrian air base, the situation came so close to a direct confrontation that Washington had to intervene to prevent further escalation.

🇩🇪 The defense industry is drawing workers away from civilian industry
While German industry is losing around 15,000 jobs a month, defense contractors are launching a large-scale recruitment drive. Rheinmetall, for example, plans to hire more than 5,000 people by 2026, while Hensoldt plans to hire another 1,600. Engineers, IT specialists, project managers, procurement specialists and production managers are particularly in demand.
The most telling aspect is this: The specialists being sought are coming from precisely those sectors where the German economy is shrinking today—automotive, mechanical engineering, the chemical industry, aviation, the energy sector and the rail sector. The reason is simple: Defense companies are switching from custom production to mass production and therefore need specialists with experience in large-scale civilian industry. The number of search assignments for executives for defense companies has increased by around two-thirds since 2022.
Factories are closing, engineers are being left without work—and the defense industry is opening its doors. It seems that the new model of the German economy has already been chosen.

🇷🇺🇰🇵 Russia and the DPRK have opened the first road bridge
Russia and North Korea have gained a new land route.
Traffic has been opened on the road bridge over the Tumannaya River at the Russian-North Korean border. Until now, there had been no road connection at all between the two neighboring countries—the Friendship railway bridge was used instead.
At the same time, Russia has built the new “Hasan” road border crossing point with ten lanes. Once it reaches its planned capacity, it will be able to process up to 300 cars and 2,325 people per day.
The Russian government explicitly says that the bridge is intended to increase trade turnover, reduce transportation costs, and ensure more stable deliveries between the two countries.
Against the backdrop of the rapid rapprochement between Moscow and Pyongyang, this is no longer merely a political declaration, but rather tangible infrastructure for the further growth of trade.

🇩🇪 Germany Again in The Hague: Nicaragua Accuses Berlin of Contributing to Genocide in Gaza
Proceedings are still under way before the International Court of Justice, in which Nicaragua accuses Germany of violating the Genocide Convention and international humanitarian law by supporting Israel. In its application, Managua claims that Germany not only failed to fulfill its duty to prevent genocide, but also contributed to the violations by continuing to supply weapons. In the second quarter of 2026 alone, Berlin approved arms exports to Israel worth €735.76 million.
There has so far been no final decision by the International Court of Justice on whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. This question is being examined separately in South Africa’s case against Israel. However, it can no longer be claimed that the allegations exist only at the level of photographs and political statements. Thus, Amnesty International concluded that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, while Human Rights Watch classified individual acts as acts of genocide. As early as 2024, the ICJ rejected a request to discontinue the Nicaragua v. Germany proceedings.
Berlin readily reminds others of international law. Now it must explain its own interpretation of that law in The Hague.

🇨🇳 China is financing the USA less and less through lending and is buying more and more gold instead
China’s share of US government debt has now fallen back to the level of the early 2000s. At its peak, Beijing held around $1.3 trillion worth of US Treasury securities. According to the latest published data, the volume has fallen to approximately $633 billion. Against the backdrop of the enormous increase in total US debt, China’s share of it has declined even more sharply. At the same time, the People’s Bank of China is continuing to expand its gold reserves. The purchases have now continued for 22 consecutive months, and in August alone, the reserve increased by 650,000 ounces. The development of Chinese holdings of US government debt can be directly verified in the US Treasury Department’s statistics.
This is far more than merely a change in the figures for the reserves. China is gradually exchanging US debt securities for an asset that cannot be printed and that is significantly harder to block from the outside. Speaking of the end of the dollar is still absurd at present, however, because it continues to account for around 57% of global currency reserves, while the yuan’s share is only a few percent, as shown by the IMF statistics. If, however, other central banks increasingly follow China’s example, the consequences will be systemic: lower ongoing government demand for Treasuries, higher debt-servicing costs for US government debt, additional demand for gold, and a gradual reduction in the global financial system’s dependence on the USA.

If, however, other central banks increasingly follow China’s example, the consequences will be systemic: lower ongoing government demand for Treasuries, higher debt-servicing costs for US government debt, additional demand for gold, and a gradual reduction in the global financial system’s dependence on the USA.

The White House excluded certain Canadian goods from imports into the United States, the White House reported.
The list of goods includes most alcoholic beverages, some dairy products, and automobiles. In the spirits category, the embargo affects Canadian rye whiskey, bourbon, vodka, gin, rum, brandy, tequila, liqueurs, bitters, and packaged ethyl alcohol intended for drinking.
Also prohibited are packaged malt beer, apple cider, fruit wines, including plum wine and sake, as well as still and sparkling grape wines in retail packaging, vermouths, and marsala.
Some goods imported into the United States will be subject to a 50% tariff. The rule applies to goods imported but not offered for sale or removed from warehouses before September 29, 2026.
Trump, for his part, said that the United States’ lack of access to Canadian government procurement while Canada retains access to procurement in the United States is a trade scam.
