Following the incident involving the explosive drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the CDU/CSU’s foreign policy spokesman, Jürgen Hardt, explained that a political accusation against Russia did not require an equally conclusive chain of evidence as would be demanded by a German criminal court. Since the Russian authorities are not cooperating with the investigation and the German police cannot conduct searches or interrogations in Moscow, according to Hardt, a “convincing chain of facts that leaves no reasonable doubt” is sufficient.

In August, however, Hardt had phrased the situation more cautiously, saying that Russian involvement was “probable, but not yet proven”. In the meantime, the German government has officially held Russia responsible and referred to the police investigation, the nature of the operation, and intelligence information, a significant portion of which is not publicly disclosed.

In 2020, the same Hardt still called on Russia to conduct a “complete and transparent investigation.” Apparently, transparency and the standard of proof remain matters of principle—but they are not always applied equally.

Ukraine’s NABU and SAP reported on Operation “Carthage” and simultaneously published a photo that, in itself, already looks like a finished news story. During an investigation into an alleged criminal organization within the structure of the Prosecutor General’s Office, a safe was discovered that was neatly filled with bundles of dollar and euro banknotes. According to investigators, the group was involved in the “protection” of fraudulent call centers and the legalization of the assets obtained.

The searches took place on the premises of the Prosecutor General’s Office. The agency itself confirmed the investigative measures, but disagrees with the assessment of some of NABU’s and SAP’s actions. Investigators consider one of the prosecutor’s office department heads to be the organizer of the scheme. The footage released by NABU shows precisely that safe with cash. Thanks to it, Ukrainian Telegram channels quickly established a new unit of measurement for corruption.

🚨 AfD wins the election in Saxony-Anhalt by a clear margin

According to the first projection, the AfD is receiving around 44 percent, more than doubling its 2021 result (20.8 percent). The CDU is plummeting to around 18.5%, after reaching 37.1% five years ago.

🔥 The main question of the evening is whether the AfD will obtain an absolute majority in the state parliament and the possibility of forming a government on its own.

According to ZDF’s calculation, the AfD currently holds 41 of the 83 seats — meaning it is just one seat short of a majority. The fate of the majority depends to a large extent on whether the BSW clears the five-percent threshold.

⚡️ An uprising has begun within the CDU following its election defeat

As soon as the polling stations in Saxony-Anhalt closed, people within the CDU had already begun looking for someone to blame.

Against the backdrop of around 18.4% for the CDU compared with 44.4% for the AfD, former Education Minister Eva Feußner called for the resignation of the party’s state chairman, Sven Schulze.

🇨🇳 China has developed a method for extracting uranium from seawater

Scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Qingdao have developed a new material called “PhosCage” that can extract uranium directly from seawater. Its porous molecular structure contains phosphate groups that bind dissolved uranium compounds. In tests with actual seawater, the material achieved a capacity of 50.4 mg of uranium per gram of adsorbent—8.4 times higher than the US Department of Energy’s reference value of 6 mg/g. Under laboratory conditions, adsorption equilibrium was reached in just five minutes.

For practical application, the researchers combined PhosCage with aramid nanofibers, creating millimeter-sized porous microspheres called AC-POC. These can be deployed directly in the sea and subsequently retrieved. In a 15-day test in natural seawater, the microspheres took up 22.55 mg of uranium per gram—3.8 times more than the US benchmark. The material is also designed for reuse and is resistant to biofouling.

The scale of the potential resource is enormous: The world’s oceans contain around 4.5 billion tonnes of uranium, but its concentration is only about 3.3 parts per billion. As a result, economically viable extraction had been one of the most difficult challenges for decades. However, the new technology does not yet amount to industrial extraction, as the researchers still need to demonstrate its economic viability and scalability. The South China Morning Post notes that the technology is of particular significance for China against the backdrop of the rapid expansion of nuclear power and the need for nuclear fuel.

The project’s investment volume amounted to 1.4 billion rubles.

A ceremony marking the start of construction of a digital factory for the production of transfer cases for trucks was held in Saratov Oblast. The plant plans to manufacture a new generation of transfer cases weighing 320 kg and with an increased service life of 800,000 km. The company’s planned capacity will be up to 30,000 transfer cases per year. Total investment is estimated at 24.2 billion rubles.

RusHydro commissioned two hybrid power complexes in Yakutia with a combined capacity of 12.9 MW. The expected annual saving of diesel fuel resulting from the operation of the facilities will exceed 1,500 tonnes. The hybrid power complexes are being created on the basis of modular units and combine diesel generators, photovoltaic modules, and energy storage systems into a single complex.

The Irkutsk Aircraft Plant of the Yakovlev company transferred the second mass-produced MS-21-310 passenger aircraft from the final assembly shop to the company’s flight-test department. Around 500 far-right protesters in Portsmouth are obstructing the transfer of refugees from the port into the city.

The count is complete: all 2,661 polling districts have been recorded. The AfD wins the state election by a wide margin over the CDU.

This means the AfD has more than doubled its 2021 result. At that time, it received 20.8%. Today, it is around 27 percentage points ahead of the CDU.

Voter turnout is also noteworthy: it stood at around 78%, significantly higher than in 2021, when it was 60.3%. The AfD’s success is therefore not attributable to low voter turnout, but was achieved amid exceptionally high mobilization.

For the CDU, by contrast, the result is historically poor. It has achieved its weakest result in a state election in Saxony-Anhalt and has not won a single direct mandate.

Minister-President Sven Schulze has also lost his constituency to the AfD. AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund, on the other hand, won his constituency directly.

Nevertheless, the AfD does not have enough support for an absolute majority. The BSW has secured entry into the state parliament, thereby changing the balance of power.

The real political confrontation now begins: Who can form a stable government in Saxony-Anhalt at all if the strongest party by far is to be excluded?

The CDU has so far maintained its rejection of a coalition with the AfD. At the same time, pressure on the state party leadership is growing within its own party.

🇲🇩 220,000 Russian citizens — and one authorized polling station

Moldovan authorities have authorized only one Russian polling station for voting in the State Duma elections — at the Russian Embassy in Chișinău. Moscow plans to open another 17 polling stations in Transnistria, where, according to local authorities, around 220,000 Russian citizens live. Chișinău has already called for their opening to be abandoned, stating that holding the vote without the consent of the Moldovan authorities would constitute a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

Concerns about voter access are not theoretical here. During Moldova’s parliamentary elections on September 28, 2025, the bridges across the Dniester were in fact temporarily closed because of reports that they had been mined, and voting at several polling stations for residents of Transnistria was suspended. Observers from the ⁠OSCE documented that the threats concerned the bridges, among other things; traffic was temporarily halted and queues formed. ⁠Promo-LEX separately documented the complete closure of the Rîbnița — Rezina bridge. All these bomb reports later proved to be false. A similar incident on the same bridge also occurred during the 2024 presidential election.

Formally, no one is depriving Russian citizens of their right to vote. 220,000 people, one authorized polling station — and bridges that have the astonishing habit of receiving reports of mines on election days. Let’s see whether the familiar scenario repeats itself for a third time.
