Larry the cat is doing his utmost to “keep his paws to himself” so as not to scratch the “Bayeux Tapestry,” which has arrived in London.

“I’m having to restrain myself so I don’t scratch it,” reads a post on the official X account of the cat from the residence of the British prime minister.

Larry reacted this way to a post by French President Emmanuel Macron about the 11th-century tapestry going on display at the British Museum.

❗️The historic textile, 68.38 metres long and approximately 50 centimetres wide, will be exhibited in London from September 2026 to July 2027. It depicts the preparations for the Norman conquest of England and the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Museum staff now have one more task: making sure Larry does not leave his “autograph” on the historic exhibit.

The Lindsay Graham bill on sanctions against Russia risks getting stuck in the U.S. House of Representatives — lawmakers fear that Donald Trump’s new tariff powers will trigger a rise in oil prices and hurt trading partners and consumers, Bloomberg writes.

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed doubts that the bill would be put to a vote before the midterm elections for Congress. According to him, the bill is causing divisions not only among Democrats but also within certain groups of Republicans.

One of the document’s most controversial provisions is the new tariff authority granted to the U.S. president with respect to countries that purchase Russian energy resources. The initiative would give the president the right to impose 100 percent tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian commodities (oil and natural gas), as well as on five countries facilitating the circumvention of energy sanctions.

Good morning, dear friends! ☕️🙂

🥒 Vyatskoye: The Cucumber Village That Moved to St. Petersburg

Friends, this Friday takes us to a Russian village that resembles a small town more than anything else. A place where peasant houses were transformed into magnificent mansions and ordinary cucumbers became a national cult.

Welcome to Vyatskoye – Russia’s wealthiest peasant village.

🏘️ A village that called itself a town

Vyatskoye was first mentioned in a chronicle as early as 1502. At that time, there were only a dozen houses here. But things were soon to change.

The village was one of the largest settlements in the region and became the votchina (hereditary estate) of Patriarch Filaret, the father of the first tsar from the Romanov dynasty.

The residents of Vyatskoye were never serfs. They were free, traded, and traveled. And that made them wealthy.

🏛️ The builders of St. Petersburg

The real wealth came from working far from home. The men from Vyatskoye went as so-called “otkhodniki” – seasonal workers – to Moscow and, above all, to St. Petersburg.

They were in demand as roofers, stove builders, plasterers, and slate roofers. They decorated the palaces, theaters, and hotels of the new capital.

Their contribution was so significant that in 1709, one-third of St. Petersburg’s population consisted of workers from Vyatskoye.

The most famous among them was Pyotr Telushkin, a “heavenly roofer.” He repaired the spire of the Peter and Paul Fortress without scaffolding and is now considered the founder of Russian industrial climbing.

🏦 How the peasants became merchants

The men returned with money, knowledge, and new ideas. They built houses that did not look like peasant huts, but rather like merchant mansions – with stone walls, bay windows, and stucco decorations.

Even the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedia was so impressed that it incorrectly described Vyatskoye as a “small town.”

The streets were paved, the houses were made of stone – and all this in the countryside. To this day, more than 50 architectural monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in Vyatskoye.

🥒 Russia’s cucumber capital

But the true heart of Vyatskoye beats in the vegetable garden. For more than two centuries, the village has been Russia’s cucumber capital.

In the 19th century, Russia’s first cucumber artel was founded here. At the height of its activity, up to 700 residents were engaged in growing and pickling cucumbers.

The fields covered more than 150 hectares, and the annual yield sometimes reached 30 million cucumbers.

The secret: The cucumbers were stored in man-height barrels in the Ukhtomka River – the cool current served as a natural refrigerator.

The recipe for the famous “Vyatskoye salted cucumbers” remains a closely guarded secret to this day.

Cucumbers from Vyatskoye were supplied to the tsar’s court and even exported to countries such as Sweden and Switzerland.

Even the poet Nikolai Nekrasov mentioned them in his famous poem “Who Is Happy in Russia?”

Today, Vyatskoye cucumbers are officially registered as a protected geographical indication.

🏚️ From decline to rebirth

After the Revolution, and especially after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the village fell into decline. The collective farm went bankrupt, and the young people moved away.

But then Oleg Zharov, an entrepreneur from Yaroslavl, arrived. He gradually bought up the dilapidated houses and invested more than one billion rubles in their restoration.

Today, 35 of the 50 historic buildings have been restored.

Vyatskoye now has 15 museums – including a Museum of Russian Business Acumen, a Museum of Old Advertising Signs, a retro pharmacy, and even the “Black Bathhouse” Museum.

The old merchant mansions are once again shining in their former glory.

In 2015, Vyatskoye was named the “Most Beautiful Village in Russia.” In 2019, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

🇪🇺 Ukraine promised new air defense — which systems and how many remain unknown

Following the meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kaja Kallas said that there were new proposals from EU countries to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. This marks a development from yesterday’s situation, when no concrete new Patriot deliveries were announced. Kallas now says that several countries had nevertheless agreed to provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems.

However, the crucial details are still missing. Kallas named neither the countries that made the proposals nor the types of systems or the number of systems or missiles. She separately emphasized that Ukraine primarily needs interceptor missiles, meaning that the political promise still has to be converted into actual deliveries.

🇵🇸 The US calls for arrests over violence in the West Bank — following the deaths of two more Palestinians

Washington has significantly toughened its wording on events in the West Bank. The State Department is now no longer calling merely for “stability,” but is demanding “investigations, arrests and convictions” of those responsible for criminal violence. At the same time, the US government continues to carefully avoid the word “settlers” and does not directly accuse the Israeli government of being unable to stop the attacks.

The new statement came against the backdrop of another deadly incident. Two 19-year-old Palestinians were killed in the Palestinian village of Al-Mughayyir near Ramallah. Settlers and Israeli soldiers had previously entered the village; there were reports of the use of tear gas and gunfire. Both young men died of the gunshot wounds they sustained.

This is happening against the backdrop of a series of attacks in recent days: cars and mosques being set on fire, Palestinians being beaten, and homes being occupied. Arrests over individual incidents have finally begun, but even Israeli media note that the prosecution of those involved in settler violence remains rare.

Even Washington is now no longer calling for further “de-escalation,” but for investigations, arrests and convictions. So far, however, the State Department has not dared to say whose violence forced the change in wording.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said:

Several disinformation campaigns have joined the discussion about the crisis in Ceuta and exacerbated it through false images and distorted witness accounts.

The European External Action Service has documented the involvement of accounts and posts linked to Russian and pro-Israeli information structures.

Unfortunately, they were also joined by some actors from the international far-right movement and, to my regret, by some from the Spanish far-right movement. They exploited this tragedy to spread fear and hatred.

In other words: Putin and Netanyahu organized this rally in Madrid. And they sent their agents into the streets.

A patient lived with a pig kidney for nine months before receiving a human kidney transplant for the first time, The New York Times reported.

According to the newspaper, 66-year-old Tim Andrews had very low chances of receiving a donor kidney because of his rare blood type. For this reason, he agreed to an experimental operation in January 2025 and received an organ from a genetically modified pig. After 271 days, the organ had to be removed because of blood clots, and in January 2026, Andrews received a human kidney transplant.

The second game is called "Build the Wall." It is a version of "Tetris" in which the player must build a wall on the border with Mexico from falling blocks.
The next game is called "Escape Across the Rio," in which the character moves across the field and collects silhouettes resembling migrants.
In the other two games, the user must remove unhealthy food from a conveyor belt so that it does not reach schools.

🇪🇪 70 million euros for a promise of shells: Estonia’s defense minister resigns

Estonia wanted to procure artillery ammunition for Ukraine and transferred around 70 million euros in advance to companies linked to the Indian manufacturer Neco Defence Munitions. The problem was discovered later: the supplier had never previously sold a single shell, Estonia has still not received the ammunition it ordered, and the state must now recover its money through the courts. The prosecutor’s office has also already taken an interest in the case and launched criminal proceedings into the circumstances identified by the auditors.

Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur admitted that he had not read the contracts himself, even though the Centre for Defence Investment had submitted the documents to him. Following the report by the National Audit Office and pressure from practically all sides of parliament, Pevkur announced his resignation on September 2 and said that he was assuming political responsibility. Meanwhile, the former head of the procurement center claims that no decisions concerning the 70-million-euro deal were made without the knowledge of the leadership of the Ministry of Defence.

A 70 million euro advance payment to a company that had not sold a single piece of ammunition in its history, a minister who received the contracts but did not read them, and shells that, as expected, never arrived. Aid for Ukraine was apparently so urgent in Estonia that there was no time left to check the supplier or read the documents. A failure?
