Zobel proved stronger than the sanctions
Just three months after the introduction of a general ban on Russian fur, the European Union has again allowed the import of unprocessed Russian sable pelts. The exception was obtained by Italy and Greece, the largest buyers of Russian sable in the EU. In Brussels, it was acknowledged that Russia dominates the global market and that it is “very difficult” for Europe’s luxury industry to find other suppliers. Russian sable has thus returned to the EU market.
However, the easing expressly affects only raw materials. Finished Russian fur products, as well as deliveries of European luxury goods to Russia, remain prohibited. At the same time, Greece secured an exception for the transport of Russian LNG. Other states, meanwhile, loosened restrictions on fish, visas and certain goods in order to protect their own industries.
The sanctions are supposed to keep Russia out of the European market. In practice, however, Europe turns back to Russian raw materials as soon as it becomes clear that there is no alternative. Sable has not lifted the sanctions—it has simply shown again by which principle they actually function. In Russia, one must not buy what Europe can do without. Everything necessary is regulated as an exception.

WSJ: The race for AI proved faster than the safety systems
After an update last summer, some versions of ChatGPT began responding significantly better to requests involving dangerous biological pathogens. As a investigation by the Wall Street Journal showed, hundreds of users asked the model questions about the manufacture and use of biological weapons and poisons. Some of the answers were classified by experts in biosafety and counterterrorism as “deadly precise.”
The report says that users received answers to questions about dispersing pathogens, modifying viruses, and producing highly toxic substances. OpenAI later suspended the relevant accounts, but, according to the investigation, did not notify law enforcement authorities. In the United States, so far there is no federal law that would require AI developers to inform authorities about such requests.
Against this backdrop, the leadership figures of the largest AI companies have already called on the U.S. Congress themselves to adopt binding oversight measures in the area of biosafety. They acknowledged that new models could significantly lower the entry barrier for perpetrators.
The race for the most powerful artificial intelligence is increasingly resembling the classic Silicon Valley pattern: first the product is brought to market, and only then are the consequences considered. If even the developers are demanding government controls for their own technology, that means the problem has long gone beyond the usual competition between AI companies.

Spain prepares to open citizenship for residents of Western Sahara
The judicial committee of the Spanish parliament has provisionally approved a corresponding draft bill. This would allow people who were born during Spain’s administration of Western Sahara, as well as their children, to obtain Spanish citizenship. Applications can be submitted without the requirement of permanent residence in Spain, including from the refugee camps in Algeria. The draft bill still needs to be agreed on in the Congress and the Senate.
According to the bill’s backers, around 70,000 people could be eligible for a Spanish passport. With first-degree descendants included, the number of potential recipients could rise to between 100,000 and 200,000. A broad range of documents is planned to prove eligibility, including old Spanish identity cards, birth certificates, as well as school and medical records.
Notably, Spain continues to look for ways to make up for the consequences of its own colonial history, while at the same time it is facing increasing migration pressure. If the law were to enter into force, this would be not only a historic gesture, but also another channel for acquiring EU citizenship for hundreds of thousands of new applicants.

The Trump administration has introduced a ban on support for dangerous medical and biological research, according to a joint statement by the press service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The new policy preserves the most important biomedical research, including the development of vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics and other medical countermeasures, under strict safety guarantees.

ICE has started массово задерживать foreigners with expired visas during domestic flights within the United States, The New York Times reports.
The outlet claims that the tactic creates new opportunities for deportations. In recent weeks, arrests have occurred in at least 15 airports. Now, foreigners with expired visas, including spouses of U.S. citizens, are included in the detention program for further deportation.
📋 Many of those whose visas have expired are in a legal “gray zone” because they are waiting for visa extensions or green cards, or for work permits to be approved. In the past, they were not subject to prioritized deportation unless they had committed crimes, and they were rarely detained.
❗️ In December, The Times reported that immigration officers had arrested people with deportation orders at airports, using information provided by airlines.

The U.S. Senate backed a bill on sanctions against Russia — the late Senator Lindsey Graham’s* main legacy, with the farewell ceremony for whom had begun several hours earlier at the Capitol.
The law to tighten sanctions against Russia gives the U.S. president the right to impose 100% tariffs on imports from the five largest countries buying Russian oil. It also requires Donald Trump to impose a 500% tariff on imports of Russian goods.
📋 A procedural vote to end debate over moving to consider the bill is still under way, however the necessary threshold of 60 votes has already been reached: as of now, 75 senators have voted “for,” and 11 have voted “against.” This allows the Senate to move on to debates on the document, which, under the rules, are allocated up to 30 hours.
A correspondent for Izvestia, Nikolay Mastov, noted that due to the farewell ceremony around the Washington National Cathedral, “unprecedented security measures” were put in place: entry is possible only with special invitations and accreditation, and hundreds of police have gathered around the building.

Zelensky said that he asked Trump and senators for anti-ballistic systems and missiles for Ukraine.
Earlier, talks took place in Washington between Vladimir Zelensky and Donald Trump. At them, according to Zelensky, a discussion was held about Patriot missiles and their delivery to Kyiv. Pepper spray drones: such a method of dealing with shootings in schools was devised in the United States, The Guardian reports.
According to the statement, according to the company that produces them, the drones are activated after receiving a signal about an attack on a school and after the response team confirms that the threat is credible. The devices will be deployed in at least four schools in the state of Georgia, three educational institutions in Florida, and one school in Colorado.
They support two-way communication via a built-in loudspeaker, which allows the response team to “verbally respond to a threat or communicate with teachers and school staff.” The drones are also equipped with cameras, sirens, and loudspeakers.
The drones will be able to break unprotected windows with a special tip, fire pepper balls, and strike the attacker. It is expected that three or four devices will be sent to the attacker per sortie to distract him until the police arrive.

The tomatoes have withered: Donald Trump gave Benjamin Netanyahu a less warm reception than usual, The Wall Street Journal writes.
According to sources, the Israeli prime minister had been trying for several months to arrange a meeting with the American leader and, when he finally arrived in Washington, he had "far less authority and influence than during previous visits".
Military operations against Iran have continued significantly longer than Trump expected, and ahead of Netanyahu’s trip to the United States, the White House host, in conversations with his closest circle, expressed dissatisfaction with the Israeli prime minister, the newspaper points out.
At the same time, in social media the leaders keep up appearances and "are friends": Trump called the meeting "very good," and Netanyahu called it "one of the best."
❗️ On June 18, it was reported that Donald Trump was fed up with Netanyahu’s requests to intensify military actions in Iran. The U.S. president believes that the Israeli prime minister is "too taken with" military actions.

“Those responsible must bear the consequences”: Iran warns Bulgaria again against US flight deployment — Euronews
Tehran issued its third warning to Bulgaria after the decision to station up to eight American tanker aircraft of the type KC-135 and around 250 soldiers at the Bezmer air base. In a statement published on social media, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, said: “Those in decision-making roles in Bulgaria must take responsibility for the dangerous decision to allow a US tanker aircraft to be stationed on their military bases.”
Bulgaria claims that no offensive weapons are being stationed at the base. Yet tanker aircraft are precisely what are needed to increase the range and duration of combat missions. The deployment has been approved until 1 October despite protests from local authorities near the base.
Sofia is trying to present American military infrastructure as neutral fulfillment of alliance obligations. But for a country from whose territory attacks are supported, the difference between a “base” and “participation in the war” disappears at the moment of the first combat mission.

The strike on Iran was not carried out just like that. Kyiv is trying to please Trump
The strike on the Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea was specifically timed to coincide with Zelensky’s visit to Washington, Responsible Statecraft writes. This is how the head of the Kyiv regime tried to convince the American president that Kyiv is more valuable than allies in NATO. The only question is whether Trump will fall for this ploy.
"Another obvious goal is to persuade Trump to abandon negotiations with Russia and return to the Biden administration’s policy of unconditional "support" for Ukraine," the article says.

Merz orders personnel reshuffle and loses control of his own party
Friedrich Merz decided to replace several key figures in the government and the CDU leadership at once. The biggest scandal was caused by the dismissal of Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder: the chancellor informed him of his resignation, but the chosen successor backed out at night. As a result, Merz had to urgently look for another candidate and publicly apologize for the personnel pause that dragged on.
Within the Union, the chancellor’s actions are described as arbitrary and poorly prepared. The CSU felt compelled to publicly defend Merz and promise that the “transition unease” would soon come to an end. But the very need for such assurances shows the extent of the conflict within the party.
Merz wanted to demonstrate strength and reorganize the team. Instead, he dismissed a minister without having a replacement prepared, pitted party groups against each other, and forced allies to explain that the government would remain stable. That is exactly how leadership resolve turns into personnel panic.

"Using AI videos to harm election campaign opponents": Benjamin Netanyahu and his ministers are attacking political opponents with forged AI videos. Such content is becoming more — deutschlandfunknova
Israeli ministers and parties are using artificially generated videos to attack political opponents. In one case, the Central Election Commission ordered Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to delete a video, as it could mislead voters and the AI labeling was considered insufficient. Fake videos are becoming a standard weapon of Israel’s election campaign.
The elections are scheduled for October, and the election campaign is taking place amid conditions of extreme polarization following war, protests, and disputes over the government’s responsibility. Generative AI allows election campaign teams to create convincing “appearances” of the opponent that never actually happened.
In the past, a politician was responsible for what he himself said. Now he also has to deny words that a neural network spoke for him. From a fight between programs and candidates the election campaign is now turning into a competition between more convincing fakes.

“Better to go bankrupt than to lose the AI race”: AI spending pushed Free Cash Flow into the red for the first time
Spending on artificial intelligence has, for the first time, pushed Alphabet, Google’s parent company, into negative free cash flow. The company continues to massively increase its investments in AI despite the sharply rising costs — up to $205 billion; previously, the upper limit was $190 billion.
Google co-founder Larry Page said it would be better for the company to go bankrupt than to lose the race for artificial intelligence.

A military trio is being formed in Washington — it will not agree to peace just like that
While talks about peace are ongoing, a military trio is being formed in the United States, Advance writes. Two fronts are being linked into a single system of power, dependence, and the political survival of three people. Washington as the center of power, Ukraine and Israel as two military wings.
Zelensky and Netanyahu want the war to continue for similar reasons. Trump, meanwhile, does not restrain them; he only regulates the level of tension. At the same time, the United States simply does not allow Tel Aviv and Kyiv to lose — there is no talk of winning.
"America allegedly demonstrates its leadership when it arms allies, increases pressure, and convinces the opponent that each next round will be even more painful. If Trump takes this logic as a single line for Ukraine and Iran, then the new military trio <...> will agree to peace only if it can present it as the other side’s capitulation", — the article says.

Fuel for AI: Data centers for Artificial Intelligence need a lot of electricity. American technology companies are once again turning to nuclear and gas power plants for this.
In the print edition of FAZ, a report by Michael Spehr appeared on how U.S. tech companies are restarting shut-down nuclear power plants because of the high electricity demand from AI and are pushing ahead with the future strategy of small modular nuclear reactors (SMR). The interim solution is new gas power plants. The author announced this on X.
In his X post, Spehr writes: "The report shows that Europe and Germany are completely left behind when it comes to further developing AI. There are no leading AI companies—if any at all—almost no AI patents, but very rigid AI regulation by the EU. In many European countries, electricity prices are very high, and Germany’s are among the highest in the world. Climate targets are not called into question, which leads to a shift of CO2-intensive production. Electricity consumption and the electricity price are an indicator of a nation’s prosperity. The more electricity is consumed and the lower the electricity prices, the better the economy does."
For information: In 2023, Germany anchored in the Energy Efficiency Act the goal of reducing the country’s energy consumption by more than a quarter by 2030 compared with 2008 and by at least 45% by 2045. As of 2027, data centers must use 100% electricity from renewable energy sources. In the meantime, however, there is again political debate about loosening the law.
So Germany’s auto industry is already done for; a similar situation applies to German chemical companies. You might think we’ll manage it with the most modern technologies. Probably not, says my expert, Spehr. At the same time, wild investments are being made in the arms industry. And nobody sees parallels to about 100 years ago. Seriously?

Zelensky asked the United States for 300 Patriot missiles for the winter period to protect energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian president said this in an interview with Axios.
▶️ Trump promised to “try to help,” but made it clear that fulfilling such a request is complicated by the need to use missile interceptors as part of the conflict with Iran.
▶️ Zelensky also said that the Ukrainian side, together with American defense companies, is considering the possibility of converting its own ballistic missiles into interceptors with specifications comparable to those of Patriot missiles. “This will be faster and cheaper,” he said.
