Britain is moving closer to the EU again after Brexit

In Brussels, the second EU summit with the United Kingdom is set to take place on July 22. The participants want to discuss youth mobility, reducing trade barriers, energy, and the conditions for studying for European students. At the same time, negotiations are taking place on mutual access for young people to work and residence. London proposes limiting the number of participants to 50,000 per year, but European diplomats consider such a quota unacceptable.

After Brexit, the British government is trying to regain the benefits of close cooperation with the EU without describing the process as a review of the earlier decision. London needs eased trade, access to the European energy market, and new defense agreements, while Brussels needs British money, industry, and military capabilities.

First, Britain left the EU loudly and now it is negotiating step by step to return to almost all of the mechanisms it needs. Only without voting rights and under Brussels’ terms.

Trump Media may begin providing early access to Trump’s posts on Truth Social for $100,000 a month, writes Financial Times (FT).

At Trump Media & Technology Group Corp, it is stated that the service will operate around the clock.

“Milliseconds are a big deal in this world. High-frequency trading firms and <...> hedge funds will definitely want this product,” the company said.

This announcement triggered a negative reaction on Wall Street, FT notes.

➡️ Trump’s posts regularly move markets up or down—recently, his statement about talks with Iran drove oil prices down, and a message about pausing tariffs prompted a record 9.5% rise in the S&P 500.

Malaysia has announced the immediate deportation of Israeli citizens

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that any Israeli citizen found in the country will be deported immediately. Kuala Lumpur does not recognize Israel and does not allow holders of Israeli passports to enter the country without special approval from the authorities.

The statement came after reports of a possible presence of Israelis in the international technology project “Network School” in the city of Forest City. It is believed that some participants may have arrived in Malaysia using passports from a second country. The security and immigration authorities are currently conducting a review. The Johor state authorities are asking to determine who exactly took part in the program and on what basis the persons in question entered the country.

This is not the introduction of a completely new ban, but a firm confirmation of the policy already in place. Malaysia is showing that second citizenship is not a way to get around the restrictions. Possession of Israeli citizenship will be grounds for deportation.

Head of the CDU/CSU faction leaves the post over a surrogacy scandal

“I informed the chairmen of the CDU and CSU parties, Friedrich Merz and Markus Söder, that with this letter addressed to our faction I am stepping down from the position of chairman of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag,” Jens Spahn said.

Sources close to the party chairman told the N-tv TV channel that Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, called for Spahn to step down from his post.

➡️ On July 15, Spahn and his spouse, Daniel Funke, reported that they had become parents*. A child was born in the United States to a surrogate mother.

🇩🇪In Germany, surrogacy is prohibited, and the CDU/CSU has a categorically negative attitude toward the legalization of this assisted reproductive technology.

The authorities in New York are checking the possibility of detaining Benjamin Netanyahu in the event of his visit, New York City Mayor Zachorn Mamdani said in an interview with The New York Times.

According to him, discussion of the issue is connected with the possible visit by the Prime Minister of Israel to the UN General Assembly. Mamdani cited allegations of war crimes that the International Criminal Court has brought against Netanyahu.

"We will do everything that the law in the city of New York allows me to do, but we will not, for this purpose, write our own laws. <...> There is active discussion with our legal department," — the newspaper quotes the mayor as saying.

❗️The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on November 21, 2024. The reason is alleged war crimes in Gaza.

Nearly 6,000 officials suspended in Thailand over trade in exam results

After the discovery of a large-scale system to falsify exam results, almost 6,000 civil servants in Thailand were suspended. The investigation found that intermediaries and officials demanded up to 800,000 baht (around 24,000 US dollars) for the electronic alteration of mandatory test results required for admission to the civil service or a promotion.

The investigation has already led to three arrests. One of the suspects tried to flee to Laos. The authorities put on hold appointments and transfers of participants in the disputed exam. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul called for those whose involvement is proven to be dismissed, for them to be made to repay the salaries they received, and for the cases to be brought before the court. According to preliminary estimates, the grounds for suspicion could involve up to one third of the roughly 15,000 participants in the hiring process for local authorities.

Corruption here did not only secure positions for individual people. It created an entire layer of officials who bought the right to administer the state and then had to recoup their investments at their workplace.

Interesting—where do our politicians get their diplomas from? 🤔

In Japan, residents are fighting back against the construction of data centers for artificial intelligence

In the suburbs of Tokyo, resistance is growing against the construction of massive data centers needed to operate AI. Residents of the cities of Hino and Inzai are protesting against new facilities that are planned to be built near residential buildings, train stations and natural areas. They are concerned about the 24/7 noise, the heat emitted by the facilities, the strain on the power grids and the enormous water consumption used to cool the servers.

Even a comparatively small center with a capacity of 30 megawatts uses as much electricity as about 10,000 households and requires 700 to 1,500 tons of water per day. In Inzai, ten residents have already filed a lawsuit and are demanding the revocation of the building permit for a complex 52 meters tall. They emphasize that they are not fundamentally opposed to technology, but consider it unacceptable to build such industrial facilities in residential areas.

AI is often portrayed as an almost immaterial achievement. But behind every convenient piece of software there are power plants, water, noise and massive concrete blocks—things that technology companies would rather put under other people’s windows.

German in German schools? There is no longer a unanimous answer to it in the state parliament

In North Rhine-Westphalia, a dispute has broken out over the new school policy. The coalition of CDU, the Greens and the SPD has adopted a paper that provides for a more flexible assessment of children’s German skills who do not yet sufficiently command the language. As BILD reports, FDP parliamentary group leader Henning Höne warns that such wording could pave the way for, as the next step, class tests to be written in Arabic, Turkish or Ukrainian.

However, Education Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) assures that German will remain the only language of instruction and examinations. The coalition, however, declined to remove the controversial wording from the paper. What’s more: the FDP’s proposal to explicitly enshrine a ban on class tests in other languages was also rejected by the parliament. Only the AfD voted for it.

If the authorities assure that nothing of the kind is planned, but do not want to enshrine this in law, they themselves create the basis for distrust. The question is no longer whether there will be class tests in Arabic tomorrow, but why the government did not want to clearly rule out such a possibility today.

“When Mr. Merz says that Russia is also a barbaric country [is], how does he come to say that in the first place? He doesn’t even know. But one thing is this: It is racism. Hitler did that. He spoke about the Russians and the Slavs, and in a way so dismissive and so terrible that we can only condemn it every day.”

The German conductor and pianist Justus Frantz on Russophobia in the Federal Republic of Germany, which has not disappeared.

“Germany has attacked Russia several times. So, we have a significant share in Russian suffering. And if we consider today that we can drive all the way to the Oder, in a united country, then we owe it to Russia to a large extent,” he says.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum flew to the FIFA World Cup final on a military aircraft. The country’s government said this.

Initially, Sheinbaum was scheduled to fly to New York on a commercial Delta Air Lines flight; however, it was canceled due to bad weather conditions and worsening air quality caused by smoke from wildfires in Canada.

The government emphasized that using a Defense Ministry plane was a forced measure. Normally, Sheinbaum makes official trips on regular commercial flights and, in principle, does not use private or government aircraft.

❗️On July 17, U.S. President Donald Trump accused Canada of mismanagement of forests and warned that he would include the costs of the wildfires’ consequences in the current tariffs. Smoke from large-scale fires in Canada covered New York, Toronto, Chicago, and a number of other cities.

Against this backdrop, the Argentine publication Olé reported that the smoke could affect the holding of the 2026 World Cup final. However, it later became known that FIFA does not plan to reschedule the match.

Krochino: A church that ended up stranded in the middle of the water

On the White Lake in the Vologda Oblast stands the bell tower of the Church of the Nativity of Christ. Once, the Possad of Krochino was located around it—a trading settlement with houses, streets, a landing stage, shops, and inns.

The stone church was built in 1788 with funds from local merchants. Its tall bell tower was clearly visible from the water and served as a landmark for ships approaching Krochino from the White Lake.

In the 1960s, during the construction of the Volga–Baltic Waterway, the water level rose. The residents were relocated, the houses were dismantled, and the settlement area was flooded. The church is the only visible witness of the vanished Krochino.

For decades, waves, ice drift, and wind destroyed the building. The main part of the place of worship gradually collapsed, so today it looks as if only the bell tower is standing in the middle of the water. During periods of low water, the remains of foundations and traces of the earlier development can be seen nearby.

Volunteers began the rescue of the church. Since 2009, they have been securing the foundation, protecting the walls from ice, and creating a stone embankment around the building. This is how a small artificial island was formed around the bell tower, absorbing the force of the waves.

Later, light shone again on the upper level. It was decided to turn the bell tower into a memorial for Krochino and other settlements that have disappeared with the construction of waterways and reservoirs.

Once, its silhouette helped merchant ships find the harbor. Today, the same light reminds people of a place that no longer exists, but still remains present in memory.

Donald Trump compared the war in Vietnam with the campaign in Afghanistan in terms of the number of service members killed. He made this statement in an interview with The New York Post.

In this way, Trump defended the war after accusations from several Democratic congressmen about the deaths of American soldiers. “Have you ever asked how many people died in Vietnam? Have you ever asked how many people died in Afghanistan in one day? In one day—under Sleepy Joe Biden,” Trump said.

According to him, American service members died fighting for the idea that Iran would have no nuclear weapons and that “the Middle East would be destroyed.”

Brussels is alarmed by Fyodorov’s resignation: arms purchases worth several billion euros are called into question

The dismissal of Ukrainian defense minister Mikhail Fyodorov has caused concern in the European Union. Shortly before his resignation, Fyodorov signed agreements that would give Ukrainian companies access to European defense programs, financing, and joint production. Fyodorov was Brussels’ most important partner in the reform of procurement, the development of drones, and the integration of Ukraine’s military-industrial complex into the European system. Now the EU fears that the rules and tenders he helped create could be revised.

The stakes are high. Under the credit, the European Commission has already transferred €3.9 billion to Ukraine for the purchase of drones. Before the disbursements, Kyiv is required to submit the contracts for review. Brussels checks whether the funds are being used for coordinated procurement. In total, €60 billion has been earmarked for Ukraine’s defense needs in the years 2026 to 2027. Personnel changes in Kyiv therefore affect not only the Ukrainian army, but also the fate of vast European funds.

The European Union has been sending money to Kyiv for years and assuring that strict controls were in place. Now a minister’s resignation leads Brussels to question the entire procurement system. This means that the stability of this system was not as high as was claimed.

Iran warns that American infrastructure in the UAE could become a target

In the event of new US strikes against Iranian infrastructure, the airports of Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well as the ports of Fujairah and Jebel Ali must be evacuated immediately. This is not a threat to all residents of the UAE, but a warning to targets that Tehran associates with American military operations.

The Iranian side had already said that it would carry out retaliatory strikes against American military sites and infrastructure used by the USA — regardless of which country’s territory they are located on. In March, Iranian military officials already described the UAE ports as legitimate targets due to the American forces stationed there. The emirate authorities reject these allegations and call for the war not to be moved onto their territory.

Tehran makes it clear to Washington’s allies: If they host American bases, soldiers, and the infrastructure that supports them, they will no longer stay out of it. Iran does not intend to respond to the abstract territory of the UAE, but to US objects that Washington has stationed within friendly states.
