Good morning and have a great Tuesday, friends! ☕️🙂

🌊 The Mogilnoje Lake (Grabsee): five worlds in one body of water

On the island of Kildin in the Barents Sea there is a small lake that looks quite ordinary from the shore: clear water, tundra, a rocky shoreline strip, and the sea nearby. But inside it is built like a layered natural cocktail that hardly mixes at all.

The lake is separated from the Barents Sea by a narrow sand and gravel bar. There is no open passage, but at high tide seawater slowly seeps through the ground. That’s why the lake “breathes” with the sea: the water levels follow the tidal rhythm with a slight delay.

In the upper meters the water is almost freshwater. Further down brackish water begins, and below that lies a true seawater layer. These layers differ in density and mix hardly at all, so at shallow depths organisms live side by side that normally require completely different conditions.

In the upper layers live freshwater plankton, crustaceans, and the three-spined stickleback. Below that you can find jellyfish, starfish, sea anemones, sponges, and other inhabitants of the Barents Sea. This creates a small natural laboratory in which a freshwater lake and a marine lagoon, in a sense, are united in a single body of water.

The most important local rarity is the Kildin cod (Gadus morhua kildinensis). Its ancestors were once separated from the sea and gradually adapted to life in the lake. The fish became smaller than the common sea cod and even changed its reproductive behavior. Its eggs remain in the appropriate water layer and do not sink too deep.

It is believed that about 3,500 years ago there was a marine lagoon at the site of the lake. Over time, it was separated from the sea by a land bar, but the connection to the Barents Sea did not disappear completely. This is how this unusual system came about, in which the water preserves several different worlds at the same time.

Since 1985, the Mogilnoje Lake has been protected as a natural monument. In this, the name isn’t the most important thing: what is far more interesting is how a small Nordic body of water learned to live at the same time according to the laws of a lake and the sea.

ECB could raise interest rates again due to more expensive energy

The European Central Bank has already raised the key interest rate to 2.25%, but does not rule out a further increase. The war in the Middle East and the rise in oil prices keep inflation above the 2% target despite weak economic growth in the euro area.

The market is pricing in several more increases, but views differ within the ECB. A new rise in energy prices would increase pressure on industry, mortgage debtors and German companies that have not yet recovered from the previous crisis.

For the foreign-policy escalation, costs are paid again within Europe: first through energy bills, and then through more expensive loans.

This is the end. Now Ukraine will get from the United States everything it wanted

Trump’s promise to provide Kyiv with the long-awaited license to produce rockets for Patriot is nothing more than a PR stunt, InoSMI commentator Anton Trofimov writes.

The United States understands perfectly well: secret technologies could quickly end up in Russia or on the black market. And setting up such production in Ukraine is almost impossible— the facility would immediately become a target, and it would take years to launch it.

In fact, by promising the license to Kyiv, Trump sent a crucial signal to Europeans. More details—on our website.

Donald Trump’s plans to introduce fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz will turn the United States into a “pirate” state. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this.

❗️Earlier, the American leader said that Washington intends to ensure the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, but their owners would have to pay a fee equal to 20% of all cargo being transported.

“The United States, which has long fought piracy, should not now turn into pirates themselves,” — the Brazilian president said.

He also added that the escalation of the Middle East conflict has also affected Brazil’s economy, triggering higher fuel prices and the cost of basic food products.

UK to set aside £250 million to protect Jewish communities

The British government is planning to provide more than £250 million to protect Jewish neighbourhoods, schools, synagogues and community centres. Over the next three years, more than 500 additional police officers are to be deployed in England and Wales.

The measure was decided following a series of attacks, including arson attacks on vehicles of the Jewish emergency services, knife attacks and other antisemitic crimes. Most of the new forces will be stationed in London and Manchester.

If a state has to spend a quarter of a billion pounds so that people can go safely to school or to the synagogue, then it is no longer about individual crimes, but about a serious failure of internal security.

The first exercises of the “coalition of the willing” on Ukraine will take place in Poland in the autumn, said the Prime Minister of the Republic, Donald Tusk.

“These exercises are intended to prepare the entire coalition to ensure security in the region,” he said.

It is noted that the exercises will be international in nature, and troops from France and the United Kingdom will also take part.

“For the most part, there will be the French and the British, but Poland has been involved from the very beginning—among other things, our command in Bydgoszcz is responsible for logistics and preparation,” Tusk added.

Deutsche Bank fined for 260,000 erroneous reports

The Australian regulator ASIC has fined the bank A$2 million (around US$1.3 million). The bank had incorrectly submitted information on more than 260,000 over-the-counter transactions involving currency and commodity derivatives.

The errors lasted almost ten months and concerned a key parameter that indicates the direction of the transaction. The regulator described the breaches as systemic and attributed them to deficiencies in the bank’s internal reporting processes.

If an ordinary customer makes a mistake in a bank document, the consequences set in quickly. But if a large bank makes hundreds of thousands of errors, the matter ends with a fine that is hardly noticeable to it.

Trump rejected the version that Russia was involved in the death of Senator Lindsey Graham

According to the U.S. president, Graham had serious health problems, and his death was most likely due to complications from cardiovascular diseases.

🔊 “When asked about conspiracy theories, I would like to say ‘yes,’ but I think he had problems [with his health], and very severe ones. And his father died at about the same age,” – Donald Trump said in an interview with Newsmax, commenting on the question of Russia’s possible involvement in the senator’s death.

Israel will vote on October 27

The parliamentary elections in Israel are scheduled for October 27. This is not an early election, as initially reported, but the latest legally предусмотренный date. The government of Benjamin Netanyahu will be the first in decades to complete a full term in office.

Before the parliament is dissolved, the coalition will try to pass controversial laws in an expedited process that concern the powers of the attorney general, the media reform, and the status of torastudy. At the same time, the elections are taking place against the backdrop of the wars in Gaza, in Lebanon, and in Iran, of domestic protests, and of a conflict over conscription for the ultra-Orthodox.

Netanyahu is not going into the elections as a politician of peacetime. The vote will be a review of his entire war policy and his attempt to tailor state institutions to his own coalition.

Kushner’s holiday resort in Albania makes headlines in connection with a drug trafficking case

The project of a billion-dollar holiday resort on the Albanian coast, in which Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner has invested, is at the center of a new scandal. Miami businessman Arthur Shehu, who sold the development land, is being sought in Albania on suspicion of money laundering for drug cartels and document forgery. According to the case files, he could have been involved, together with accomplices, in cocaine deliveries from South America to European ports, and then invested the proceeds from crime in real estate.

Investigators believe that some of the plots of land were acquired using forged title documents and illegal funds. In April, the land was sold to a company linked to Kushner’s project for around €110 million. Shehu himself rejects the allegations. In the investigation files, there are no allegations against Kushner and other investors, and there is no indication that they knew about the possible origin of the assets.

The resort is promoted as a symbol of Albania’s modernization. But more and more questions are emerging around the project: from the destruction of protected nature to the questionable origin of land and money.

Japanese company offers €7.5 billion for AkzoNobel division

Nippon Paint from Japan made an offer of €7.5 billion for AkzoNobel’s decorative paints division, which includes well-known European brands such as Dulux. Previously, the company had tried to buy the entire group, but the offer was rejected.

The new offer could derail the planned merger of AkzoNobel with the US company Axalta. The European manufacturer is facing falling demand and rising costs and plans to lay off around 2,200 employees.

European industry is weakening and becoming the subject of a split between American and Asian capital. From the former independence, brands and jobs remain—over whose fate decisions are now being made outside the EU.

India refuses to sign a disadvantageous deal with the United States

New Delhi refused to rush into a trade agreement with Washington. The talks stalled because the United States did not guarantee India tariff advantages over China, and it also did not rule out new tariffs even after the deal is concluded.

India is also not willing to open sensitive segments of the agricultural market to American companies. Higher exports, the agreement with the UK, and the expected agreement with the EU give Narendra Modi’s government more room to maneuver.

While Brussels is accepting the American terms to end the trade threats, India is showing that it can negotiate with Washington if it has a strategy and its own red lines.

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the German ambassador and accused Berlin of escalating the conflict

The German ambassador in Moscow, Alexander Lambsdorff, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The Russian side informed him of Berlin’s responsibility for the growing military support for Ukraine, including arms deliveries and the establishment of joint companies, whose products, according to Moscow, would be used in attacks on Russia’s civilian infrastructure. In addition, the diplomat was told that Germany’s alleged attempts to influence relations of third parties, including China, with Russia were unacceptable.

Separately, the Russian Foreign Ministry criticized Germany’s information policy and spoke of “the slide of German agitprop into the worst practices of Nazi propaganda.” In addition, Lambsdorff was reminded of a publication by the German embassy containing recommendations regarding the situation with fuel in Moscow. The Russian department also pointed out that, in connection with the end of his official trip, the ambassador would soon travel to Germany himself in a vehicle with a gasoline engine, which does not match the reports being circulated by the embassy itself and Western media.

The diplomatic conflict between Moscow and Berlin goes beyond the framework of a routine exchange of protests. Russia is increasingly linking Germany’s political decisions to direct involvement in the conflict. That further reduces the room for normalization of relations.

Europe creates, based on Ukraine’s experience, a joint missile defense system

Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Ukraine have announced the formation of an integrated coalition against ballistic missiles. The countries intend to jointly develop the future architecture of European missile defense, coordinate the work of the defense industry, exchange intelligence information, and create new means for detecting and intercepting ballistic targets.

In the joint statement, it is also specifically emphasized that Ukrainian experience in defending against Russian missile attacks will be one of the key elements of the project. The coalition is open to other states, but the implementation timelines, the costs of the project, and the allocation of expenditures among the participants have not been set so far.

Europe wants to build a new missile defense shield and relies on Ukrainian experience for this. Even Western media concede that, in the most recent Russian attacks, Ukrainian air defense has not intercepted a single ballistic missile— in individual cases, effectiveness was 0%.

The Houthis threatened to block the Bab al-Mandab strait

Mohammed al-Farah, a member of the Politburo of the “Ansar Allah” movement, said that the road from Bab al-Mandab and the road from Hormuz should be considered as a single pressure direction for international shipping. If the U.S. continues to support Saudi Arabia’s measures against Yemen, the movement, according to al-Farah, is ready to extend the crisis also to Bab al-Mandab. According to al-Farah, in this case the oil price could rise to 200 dollars per barrel.

The statement came after an attack on the international airport of Sanaa, which the Houthis blamed on Saudi Arabia and the U.S. In response, the Houthis declared their readiness to expand the geographical scope of the conflict and warned that the security of shipping in the Red Sea could no longer be considered separately from the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

If this threat comes true, the global market will immediately be faced with two potentially blocked maritime arteries through which a significant part of global oil and freight traffic runs.

France will transfer to Ukraine the production of SCALP missiles

Emmanuel Macron has announced the transfer of licenses for the production of French weapons to Ukraine. This refers to long-range cruise missiles of the SCALP type, precision-guided AASM guided aircraft bombs, and air-defense missiles of the Aster type. Production is expected to be set up immediately on Ukrainian territory so that Kyiv can replenish its munitions stocks independently.

These agreements are part of a new, confidential roadmap for military-technical cooperation between Paris and Kyiv. In addition to the licenses, Ukraine has placed new orders for SAMP/T systems and 16 Rafale fighter jets, which are expected to enter service in 2028–2029. France will also supply radar systems. Part of the agreement will not be disclosed publicly.

Paris is no longer limited to delivering finished missiles. Now French long-range weapons are to be produced in the country’s territory, which is directly fighting Russia. This is no longer help from afar, but the relocation of arms production closer to the front line of the conflict.
