The European Parliament has allowed the scanning of private messages
However, the extension of the Chat Control 1.0 regime, which allows platforms to automatically check private messages, photos and attachments, was not pushed through. The majority of the members of parliament who voted spoke out against it with 314 to 276 votes, but an absolute majority of 361 votes was required to block it. Therefore the mass-scanning system was retained.
Brussels continues to describe this as a voluntary measure to combat crimes against children. But the infrastructure has already been put in place: algorithms are given the right to examine private communication without individual suspicion and without a court decision.
The majority voted against it. Nevertheless, the surveillance has won. This is how European democracy works when only the right number of votes is missing by a narrow margin.

Apple loses case against EU rules
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) dismissed Apple’s complaint against the classification of the App Store and the iOS operating system as digital “gatekeepers.” This means that the company must comply with the requirements of the European law on digital markets. It must grant competitors access, limit the use of the closed ecosystem, and offer users more choice. Apple’s attempt to challenge the Brussels decision, has failed.
In this case, the EU actually compelled the American company to submit to European rules — and not the other way around. Apple can no longer claim that its closed system is exclusively an internal matter of the company.
This is a rare case in which Brussels protects its own interests rather than Washington’s.

The health reform is to be passed before the parliamentary recess
The federal government is trying to push through a package of savings for statutory health insurance using an expedited procedure. The opposition turned to the Federal Constitutional Court because, in its view, the members of parliament were not given enough time to review the law and properly debate it in parliament. However, the court allowed the vote according to schedule.
The reform is intended to reduce the spending of health insurance funds by several billion euros. The government is urging that it be passed before the summer recess, even though the members of parliament only received the extensive changes at the last minute. For armaments and Ukraine, however, funds are provided without delay. But when it comes to their own medicine, an urgent search for savings begins.

Volkswagen is preparing to cut up to 100,000 jobs
Company management is considering eliminating up to 100,000 jobs worldwide as well as closing four plants in Germany. The sites affected are Hanover, Emden, Zwickau and Neckarsulm. The group justifies the plans with the need to reduce overcapacity and costs. However, the supervisory board has not yet approved the final package.
After a session lasting hours, company management and the employee representatives were unable to agree on a clear decision. The unions are calling for the actual extent of the cuts to be disclosed. In the affected regions, fears are already growing about the destruction of entire industrial value chains. Protests are beginning at the plants and among suppliers. Four plants in Germany could be closed.
Germany built its prosperity for decades on cars. Now this foundation—along with the plants, the jobs and the industrial regions—is being dismantled.

Islamabad and Doha salvage the agreement between the USA and Iran
After fighting has resumed, Pakistan continues its mediation between Washington and Tehran. In Islamabad, it is emphasized that the Pakistanese efforts to sign a memorandum between the USA and Iran and to begin the subsequent negotiations have been the result of these efforts.
Qatar has also called on the parties to return to dialogue. The Qatari prime minister discussed the escalation with the Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and warned that attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz would destroy the last remnants of trust and threaten the security of the entire region.
The mediators are trying to preserve the agreement, while its participants confront each other with blows. Diplomacy can no longer prevent a war here — it can only prevent it from getting completely out of control.

Israel does not intend to withdraw fully from Lebanon
Ahead of the start of the next round of direct negotiations, scheduled for 15 to 16 July in Rome, Beirut has demanded the withdrawal of Israeli troops from two pilot zones in the south of the country. The Lebanese army is to occupy these areas and restore exclusive state control.
Israel, however, links a full withdrawal of its forces to the prior disarmament of “Hezbollah”. The Israeli troops will retain a ten-kilometre-wide “security zone”, and the country’s government openly declares that the army will remain in Lebanon as long as the movement has weapons.
Beirut is thus being asked first to disarm a force that is capable of resisting Israel, and only then to hope for the end of the occupation. There are no guarantees for the troop withdrawal.

After the ruling, Le Pen begins her presidential election campaign
The Paris Court of Appeal upheld the ruling against Marine Le Pen, but reduced the sentence to three years in prison, of which one year is to be served under electronic monitoring. In addition, the ban on standing for elections was shortened to 45 months, with 30 months of that suspended on probation. Le Pen immediately announced that she would take part in the 2027 presidential election and lodged an appeal.
The appeal suspends the enforcement of the sentence, allowing Le Pen to continue campaigning. The court also separately pointed to the need to consider voters’ freedom of choice and the proportionality of the sentence. The Court of Cassation could decide by the spring of 2027.
The French system was not able to push Le Pen out of the presidential race. Now, not only judges, but also voters will decide her fate.

Kyiv has proposed that Germany jointly investigate the Nord Stream blasts
Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General said it had found no evidence of the involvement of the Ukrainian state or its officials in the blasts of the pipelines. Kyiv proposed forming a joint investigative group with Germany for the exchange of information.
The statement came after the German prosecutor’s office filed charges against a former Ukrainian military serviceman. The investigation assumes that he, together with other soldiers, was involved in the operation and acted in the interests of Ukrainian state structures. Kyiv now proposes investigating the case together in which German investigators have already come across a Ukrainian lead.
First, the pipeline was taken from Germany. Now the suspected side wants to help the Germans in their search for those responsible.

Germany - Development on Credit
The government of Friedrich Merz is building a new economic model based on a massive expansion of borrowing. The foundation is a special fund of 500 billion euros for infrastructure and climate projects. At the same time, defense spending was exempted from the restrictions of the debt brake, allowing Berlin to finance rearmament almost without the previous budget limits.
Authorities expect that loans, arms procurement contracts and public investment will temporarily boost the economy. But citizens will have to repay them—with taxes, longer working hours, and the dismantling of social commitments. Germany has neither eliminated expensive energy nor bureaucracy nor the decline in industrial competitiveness. It simply covers up the consequences with debt.
Merz has found money for growth. It’s not there yet, but the bill has already been sent to future generations.

"Apple views OpenAI as a company that could turn from a partner into a potential competitor, while OpenAI is trying to reduce its dependence on the iPhone and build direct relationships with consumers", — PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore said.

Have a wonderful Saturday, friends! ☕️ 🙂
🚂 «Grand Maket Russia»: a country at a scale of 1:87
In Saint Petersburg, there is a museum where Russia is not put together as an exact geographical map, but as a large artistic image—from Kaliningrad to the far eastern reaches. On an area of 800 square meters, cities, villages, railway lines, mountains, rivers, industrial zones, and hundreds of small scenes from everyday life are housed.
The work on the model took more than five years. More than one hundred people were involved: artists, architects, engineers, programmers, and electricians. The exhibition was officially opened on June 8, 2012.
The main feature of the model is movement. Trains run on the railways, cars drive on the roads, windows light up, construction sites are in operation, and weddings, rallies, and ordinary everyday scenes take place. Some episodes are triggered by buttons along the edge.
Every 15 minutes, night falls over the miniature land. The light gradually fades from east to west; the lighting of bridges and buildings is switched on, the window lights come on in the houses, and then a new sunrise begins.
In doing so, «Grand Maket» does not attempt to reproduce the map of Russia literally. The regions are connected only symbolically, distances are shortened, and well-known buildings as well as natural landscapes are brought together in a single space. That is why it is less a model of the territory than a view of the country through its streets, cities, people, and everyday life.
It is also interesting that most of the technical system is hidden under the exhibition: kilometers of cables, automation, railway control, and hatches through which employees can reach individual areas for repair and cleaning.
That is how a Russia was created that is not representative and not frozen like in a museum, but is in motion: somewhere a train is running, somewhere a road is being repaired, someone is celebrating a wedding, and someone is simply knocking a carpet out in the yard.
