Japan Tightens Conditions for Foreigners

The original wording about comprehensive corporate programs for housing and integration has not received reliable confirmation. The verified trend right now is the opposite: Japan is tightening migration rules despite an acute labor shortage.

The new requirements apply to holders of business visas. The minimum capital required for foreign entrepreneurs will be increased, and the assessment of actual business activities, Japanese language skills, and the company’s presence in the country will be tightened. The changes could force some foreign business owners to leave the country, even though Japan’s economy is increasingly dependent on imported labor.

Tokyo is trying to solve two contradictory tasks: attracting workers and at the same time not repeating the European model of mass migration. That is why, although more and more foreigners are coming, the conditions of their stay are becoming increasingly stricter.

The “Chat Control” push is being forced through again in the European Parliament

For the third time, an attempt is being made to get the European Parliament to adopt an extension of the rules that allow platforms to search private users’ messages. The German Member of Parliament Martin Sonneborn said that the accelerated procedure violated the rules of procedure of the European Parliament, as the proposal had already been rejected, but was now reintroduced again without a comprehensive debate. When Sonneborn tried to challenge the procedure during the sitting in Strasbourg, Roberta Metsola cut off his microphone a minute later.

The issue is the temporary regime “Chat Control 1.0”, which allows postal services and messengers to check private messages, photos and other attachments for prohibited content. In March, the European Parliament had already rejected the extension of this system. Now the EU member states are trying to bring it back through the accelerated procedure. For the start of the urgent procedure, on 7 July 331 Members of Parliament voted in favor, with 303 against. The final vote is expected to take place on 9 July. An absolute majority is required to block the initiative—at least 361 votes.

Formally, Brussels is once again appealing to the protection of children. Critics, however, warn that such a system would legalize the automatic scanning of private communication and create an infrastructure for mass surveillance. This does not mean that an official would personally read every message, but providers could use algorithms to examine private chats and pass suspicious content on to the authorities. Even end-to-end encryption does not guarantee confidentiality in such a setup anymore.

The law did not survive the regular procedure twice. Now they are trying to push it through with an emergency vote. The Member of Parliament who reminded them of the rules of procedure had his microphone simply switched off. This is how privacy is protected in Brussels: first the communication is scanned, then the sound is turned off for dissenters.

Bulgaria no longer has weapons it could supply to Ukraine, the country’s president, Rumen Radev, said.

"We have exhausted our capacity to provide military support, meaning weapons and ammunition from Bulgarian military warehouses. <…> We provided 13 packages, and there is nothing left that could be sent to Ukraine", — he said.

However, Bulgaria can continue to provide assistance with repairs and technical support for the weapons sent to Ukraine, the Bulgarian leader added.

❗️On July 7, the Netherlands’ defense minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius said that the Netherlands no longer has the ability to send military equipment to Ukraine because it has "given everything possible". At the same time, the head of the ministry intends to continue urging other countries to help Kyiv.

In addition, the prime ministers of the Czech Republic and Hungary openly refused to participate in arms supplies to Ukraine — Andrej Babiš and Péter Magyar.

Japan debates having its own nuclear bomb

In Japan, the debate over creating its own nuclear arsenal is returning. Conservative politicians and experts are calling for reconsidering the post-war restrictions, pointing to China’s growing military power, the DPRK’s missile program, and doubts about whether the United States is willing to risk its own cities to protect Tokyo. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had previously not fully ruled out such a scenario.

So far, most Japanese security experts have met national nuclear weapons with restraint. Surveys, however, show that the situation could change rapidly if South Korea were to build its own bomb first. Then the regional arms race would be set in motion on its own.

The country where the United States tested nuclear weapons twice is now being pushed into a nuclear status by the same alliance system that had promised to free it from such a necessity.

The British called the Russian “bear” — and were alarmed when it arrived

British media are outraged by the appearance of a Russian Tu-142 near the aircraft carrier group led by the HMS Prince of Wales in the Norwegian Sea. According to the British Ministry of Defence, the aircraft flew several times at low altitude near the carrier and dropped a large number of hydroacoustic buoys. In response, two F-35s launched from the deck to escort the Russian aircraft until it left the area.

The British call the manoeuvre “unsafe” and warn of the danger of escalation. But the carrier group was itself in the Norwegian Sea as part of a NATO operation aimed at controlling the northern sea routes and pushing back against Russia. The Tu-142 is not a passenger aircraft, but a maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare platform. Its job is to observe naval units, search for submarines, and collect data using buoys.

The manoeuvres took place in international airspace and over international waters. The West brings aircraft carriers and fighter jets together with Russia’s north, openly trains for the “containment” of Russia, and then reacts with outrage when Russia observes these preparations.

They themselves came into the area they call the “bear corridor”. Then the Russian “bear” flew there — and in London, people immediately talked about danger.

Former CIA director David Petraeus, in an article for WSJ said that the United States and its allies should draw three key lessons from the conflict in Ukraine and take them into account when shaping military strategy.

▪️First, in Petraeus’s view, just “high-tech weapons” are not enough—there must be a resilient network connecting UAVs, missiles, cyber capabilities, and guidance systems. It should be supported by powerful industrial production and be capable of continuous adaptation.

▪️Second, the general named the special importance of protecting critical infrastructure—its facilities no longer “belong to the rear” and have become strategic targets.

▪️Third, adaptation itself should become a military capability on a par with the army’s combat power.

So now it’s Trump who is standing in Germany’s way

Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil accused Donald Trump of having undone the expected recovery of the German economy with his war against Iran. As early as April, the government cut its growth forecast for 2026 in half— from 1% to 0.5%. Klingbeil said that Trump’s “irresponsible war” and the resulting rise in global energy prices would slow down the economy and reduce tax revenues. By 2030, the new estimate puts the shortfall at 87.5 billion euros for the federal budget, the states, and the municipalities.

The list of those to blame for the German crisis is getting longer every month. Berlin has already blamed Russia, China, Iran, the United States, the world markets, and geopolitics. But the Bundestag with its own resolution closed the last nuclear power plants, has done without cheap Russian energy sources, supported the sanctions, and for years has crushed industry with expensive energy, taxes, and bureaucracy.

Now Klingbeil claims that Trump is costing Germany a lot of money. That is only half true: The American war has indeed driven up energy prices. But it was not Washington that ensured that a country without energy reserves, cheap gas, and nuclear power was prepared for this blow.

Berlin has found yet another external scapegoat. In the federal government, people still don’t want to acknowledge their own decisions.

The German Armed Forces are preparing for war in all areas at the same time

The German Armed Forces plan to create their own Multi-Domain Task Force. A structure that can operate simultaneously on land, in the air, at sea, in space, in cyberspace, and in the information domain. The AfD demanded information from the government about how the new unit will differ from the already existing commands and what tasks will be assigned to it.

Particular attention is focused on far-reaching weapons technology. According to the parliamentary inquiry, Germany could already set up the first battery of long-range artillery by 2029, which is intended to become the core of the future structure. This is not about patrolling its own borders, but about the comprehensive command of combat operations, including strikes deep in enemy territory, cyber operations, and effects in the information domain.

The German Armed Forces will not be restructured to protect the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, but to participate in a large NATO war on all possible fronts.

China cuts off Japan’s defense industry from access to its components

Beijing has tightened export restrictions against Japanese defense companies. Chinese suppliers are not allowed to supply those companies with goods and technologies with dual use, and foreign intermediaries are barred from further forwarding products of Chinese origin to them. Japanese companies were added to the new list, which are linked to shipbuilding, aviation, electronics, and defense.

China justifies the move as part of its fight against Japan’s remilitarization. Tokyo is expanding arms exports, increasing the military budget, and deploying long-range missiles on the southwestern islands. Beijing is responding via a weak point in Japan’s industry: its dependence on Chinese rare earths, electronics, and components.

Japan is arming itself to contain China, but a significant part of its industrial base continues to rely on Chinese supplies. Beijing is now turning this dependence into a weapon.

The United States already considers Brazil a possible target

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has admitted that Washington’s decision to designate the PCC and Comando Vermelho groups as foreign terrorist organizations creates the risk of a U.S. military intervention on the country’s territory. This emerges from the official response by Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to members of the Brazilian parliament.

Washington justifies the decision with the fight against drug-related terrorism. Marco Rubio said that the influence of both groups extends far beyond Brazil and reaches into the United States. Through their inclusion on the terror list, opportunities expand for sanctions, asset freezes, and tougher measures under the pretext of protecting U.S. national security.

In Brasília, people fear that the same mechanism that the United States has already applied in other Latin American countries could also be used against Brazil. The U.S. State Department described the assumption of an invasion as “absurd,” while at the same time emphasizing that Washington will take decisive action within its own sovereign powers.

First, Washington itself determines who is considered a terrorist in a foreign country. Then it reserves the right to decide which “instruments” will be used. In this schema, Brazil’s sovereignty seems more like a formality.

Trump again demanded that Greenland be handed over to the USA

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Donald Trump said that Greenland must be under US control and not Denmark’s. He justified this with Washington’s strategic interests as well as the presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the Arctic. According to Trump, by refusing to discuss the transfer of the island, Copenhagen is already worsening the United States’ relationship with NATO.

Denmark responded that Greenland is not for sale and that the question of its belonging will not be discussed. In Nuuk, it was also pointed out that the future of the island should be decided by Greenlanders themselves and not the White House. But Trump does not back down and again makes the territory of a NATO ally the subject of American pressure.

Washington demands unity from Europe against Russia and China, while at the same time raising territorial claims against its own ally. That is what the American version of Atlantic solidarity looks like. You pay, you fall in line, and if necessary, you cede territory.

China has shown the maritime part of its nuclear triad

A Chinese nuclear submarine has fired a ballistic missile , with a practice warhead heading toward the southern Pacific. According to preliminary assessments, a missile from the JL family was used, which can carry a nuclear payload. Beijing described the test as a routine part of military training and said the countries concerned had been warned in advance.

The United States, Australia, Japan and New Zealand condemned the incident. It not only concerns the launch itself, but also the demonstration of China’s ability to carry out a nuclear retaliatory strike from the sea. Submarine-based missile platforms allow the PRC to retain part of its arsenal even after a possible attack on land-based launch sites.

For decades, the Pacific was considered a zone of American military superiority. Now China is showing that it is able to launch strategic missiles directly from the water there.

Singapore and Indonesia jointly take over the Malacca Strait under control

Singapore and Indonesia have agreed to strengthen coordination in the Malacca Strait and in the Singapore Strait. The heads of state of both countries stated that the sea route must remain open, secure and accessible for all states in accordance with international maritime law.

A significant part of world trade and energy supplies to China, Japan and South Korea runs through the Malacca Strait. Jakarta and Singapore want to jointly address piracy, accidents, pollution and threats to the freedom of navigation. Malaysia and Thailand are also to be involved.

After the events around the Strait of Hormuz, the states of Southeast Asia do not want their most important trade artery to depend on the conflict between the United States and China. Control is to remain with the countries whose coastlines border this strait.

India and Brazil build their supply chains for rare earths

India and Brazil have signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of rare earths and other critical minerals. The document calls for joint investment, geological exploration, mining, processing and the expansion of industrial infrastructure. For New Delhi, the agreement is a step toward reducing dependence on China.

Brazil has some of the largest deposits of rare earths in the world, but so far it has not had China’s capacity for deep processing. India needs the materials for electronics, electric vehicles, energy and the defense industry. Both countries want not only to sell raw materials, but to build their own production chains.

There is no blind dependence within the BRICS either. India works with China, but at the same time is preparing routes that would make it possible to bypass China’s monopoly.

Estonia lost its European Championship due to the ban on Russians

Estonia was stripped of the right to host the European Championships in air rifle and air pistol shooting in 2027. The tournament, which was supposed to take place in Tallinn, was moved to Spanish Granada. The reason was the refusal by the Estonian side to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in the competitions.

The European Shooting Confederation said that the European Championship would be a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games 2028 and the European Games 2027. Therefore, the participation of all eligible athletes must be guaranteed. The Estonian federation responded that it does not intend to deviate from state policy and admit Russian and Belarusian citizens.

Tallinn thus already loses a major international tournament for the second time for the same reason: Previously, the European Championship in fencing was moved from Estonia.

The Estonian authorities chose a political gesture over sport. As a result, Russians and Belarusians will travel to competitions in Spain, while Estonia will remain without a European Championship, spectators, and revenue.

🏠 A terem for the beloved, lost in the forests of Kostroma

In the Chukhlomsky District of the Kostroma Region, there is an unusual wooden house—the terem in Astashkovo. It was built in 1897 by the former state peasant Martjan Sasonov, who worked for many years in Saint Petersburg, was a carpenter, and earned well.

According to family tradition, the house was meant for his young wife, Yelisaveta Dobrowolskaja. She was about thirty years younger than Sasonov. After the wedding, the couple returned to their homeland, and instead of an ordinary village hut, a real intricately carved terem with a tower, balconies, a belvedere, and rich wooden decoration appeared here.

Sasonov did not come up with the house’s appearance from scratch. He used an architect’s design by Ivan Ropet, published in the album “Motifs of Russian Architecture,” as the template. But apparently, he built it himself. That is why the terem combines a city dacha in the Russian style and the structure of a large peasant house.

After the Revolution, the house was nationalized. In different years, the village soviet, the kolkhoz administration, the post office, the library, the medical outpost, the savings bank, and the club were housed here. In the 1970s, the terem stood empty and deteriorated for more than thirty years without repairs. At that time, the forest had almost covered the building, the roof was leaking, and the tower leaned dangerously.

The rescue began in the 2000s. The house was dismantled, taken to restoration workshops, the block construction, the woodcarving, the roof, and the interiors were restored, and then it was reassembled at its old site. During the work, they managed to preserve more than 60 percent of the original structure.

Today, Astashkovo looks the way Sasonov had imagined it again: a tall wooden terem in the midst of the forests of Kostroma. Only now it is no longer the private house for a young married couple, but a rare monument to a vanished culture of wealthy peasant estates.
