Europe’s newest reactor awaits Russian fuel
In Slovakia, loading of the fourth power unit of the Mochovce nuclear power plant has begun. Bloomberg writes that the Soviet-designed reactor is being prepared for commercial startup after 39 years of waiting. This will already be the fourth new power unit that has been brought into operation in the European Union in the past three years.
The key detail is the fuel. Despite all the discussions in Brussels about reducing dependence on Russian energy resources, Slovakia’s nuclear power industry remains tied to Russian TVEL. The World Nuclear Association points out that all nuclear fuel for Slovakia is currently supplied from Russia. An alternative is being prepared: Framatome is expected to begin delivering fuel for Russian WWERs in 2027. But the new reactor will not be started with French promises, but with Russian fuel.
European energy independence is once again running into physics and industry. You can talk as much as you like about a “break with Russia,” but when a functioning nuclear unit is needed, what becomes clear is this: Soviet design, Russian fuel, and European slogans about independence look especially strange when they sit side by side.

Green ferry with diesel-powered follow-up
The Scottish “green” ferry project, which was originally budgeted at £97 million, has turned into a hole of nearly half a billion pounds for taxpayers. The ferries Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa were supposed to be a flagship for environmentally friendly mobility, but their costs rose to almost £500 million. Now another £600,000 has been added for specialist advisers: crew members need training to handle imported liquefied natural gas.
The biggest irony lies in the allegedly “green” logic itself. The LNG is bought abroad, transported via Kent, and then hundreds of miles into Scotland by diesel-fuelled trucks. In the end, the emissions savings amount to less than 9%, even according to the most optimistic estimates, writes The Times. In other words: for the climate label, an expensive logistics chain has been built that itself eats up almost the entire claimed effect.
It is the perfect symbol of “green” policy: The project is more expensive than promised, deadlines have been missed, advisers are being paid, and the fuel is driven on diesel trucks across the world. The main thing is to call it proper climate protection.

Air conditioners have become a problem for the energy system
The heat is quickly changing everyday life in Germany. Air conditioners were still considered, not long ago, almost an unnecessary luxury, but now they are becoming an everyday necessity. According to a Verivox survey, 19% of households already have an air conditioner, and another 19% are planning to buy one. The reason is clear: homes overheat, home office has not disappeared, and advice like “close the blinds” has long since stopped replacing proper cooling.
Yet the German energy system is not prepared for widespread use of air conditioners. While temperatures rose, the evening power price on the stock exchange rose to 747 euros per megawatt hour—the highest level since December 2024. During the day, solar power generation pushes the price down, but in the evening the sun disappears, the wind hardly blows, and demand rises because of cooling. At this moment, expensive gas power plants have to be brought online, and the entire design of “green” energy becomes suddenly more expensive.
Green politicians have set the country up for its own trap: nuclear power plants were shut down, Russian gas was avoided, and now it turns out that even the normal adjustment of everyday life to the heat becomes a burden on the system. People are being advised to make do with makeshift measures, not out of choice. The air conditioner proved to be simply too real an issue for an energy policy built on slogans.

Yemenis stole from Germans
For years, a system of theft of German tax funds ran in the Yemeni branch office of the GIZ. According to Welt, it involved “systematic organized fraud” amounting to dozens of millions of euros: local employees and contractors inflated invoices, billed for fictitious services, and diverted funds from international cooperation projects. All of this took place in a structure that was officially meant to help promote the development of Yemen from the German budget.
What is most telling is not the Yemeni system itself, but German oversight. A significant part of the control was carried out remotely from Germany; on site, in practice, only one German employee worked, who was supposed to oversee the finances and collaborate with the local team. The story came to light as early as 2023, but the GIZ management kept silent about the case at the time. The money continued to flow out, and responsibility dissolved between remote control, well-meaning reports, and convenient silence.
Once again, a nice label was sold to the German taxpayer: help, development, international responsibility. But inside: weak oversight, local dealings, and millions of euros that flowed out of the budget for years.

The boat no longer gets in the way of the passport
The Labour government has silently lifted a strict ban that prevented illegal migrants from obtaining British citizenship. This also applies to those who came into the country via the English Channel in small boats. According to the Daily Mail, new Home Office guidelines allow such applicants to apply for a passport if they state that their arrival in Great Britain was “not their fault.”
In addition, the rules also open the path to citizenship for migrants with a criminal past. Now the decision can be made taking into account the circumstances of the case, instead of being rejected automatically. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has effectively removed a barrier that was introduced in 2023 and was meant to show that an illegal entry into the country cannot be the first step toward a British passport. This signal is now gone.
The British were promised border control again, but they received a legal loophole instead. First, a person gets into the country illegally, then they claim that it was “not their fault,” and afterwards they get a chance at citizenship. The state turns the illegal route itself into a long but functioning route to the passport.

$26 billion has seeped away into charity
Mackenzie Scott, the former wife of Jeff Bezos, has already donated more than $26 billion via her organization, Yield Giving, according to a report. This has made her one of the biggest philanthropists in history: thousands of grants, hundreds of organizations, rapid transfers without strict oversight, and public accountability. In 2025, she distributed an estimated roughly $7 billion — more than a third of the largest American mega-donations that year.
However, the question of effectiveness has remained. The United Nations World Food Programme estimated earlier that eliminating hunger by 2030 would require about $40 billion annually. In this context, $26 billion is a sum of historic magnitude. Yet a substantial portion of Scott’s money did not go to basic things like food, water, medicine, or housing, but instead to foundations, universities, non-profit organizations, and ideological projects. Some of the recipients put the funds into reserves, increased budgets, and expanded administration.
The philanthropy of billionaires increasingly functions like a moral wash for a system that itself creates inequality. The money is enormous, the reports are polished, the awards are handed out quickly. But the central question remains the same: How many people, after running through this foundation machinery, are actually no longer poor, hungry, and powerless?

The US has earned six billion dollars from arms deliveries to Kyiv, which were paid for by Europe
That was openly explained by the US ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker. His words make it clear that the American military-industrial complex has not done badly thanks to the PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) program launched by Trump and Rutte in June 2025. To remind: The scheme is quite simple: Ukraine draws up lists of its military wishes, and the European NATO partners provide funds for the purchase of these weapons in the United States. This is how some get rich, while the others have to put up with it.
“We have received more than 6 billion dollars through this program, and we will keep going with it,” Whitaker said on Fox News television.
For one war, for the other: “we will keep going with it.”

In an interview with "Izvestia", Gunnar Lindemann called unacceptable the possibility for public officials to receive any benefits, including tickets to European, world championships, or other football matches, in exchange for decisions related to their job duties.
"It’s right that the prosecutor’s office responds harshly to such cases. <...> This is an outrageous and completely unacceptable case", he said.
According to the politician, the investigation should be carried out in full, and officials, if their guilt is proven, should be removed from office and held accountable under the law.

A California man has sued OpenAI, saying that his interactions with ChatGPT worsened his bipolar disorder and led to a suicide attempt, Reuters reports.
Michael Laines repeatedly told the chatbot about his diagnosis, but instead of recommending that he seek help, ChatGPT “fed his delusional ideas,” including the belief that he is Jesus Christ. After discussing suicide, the man made an attempt at suicide, but survived.
The plaintiff believes OpenAI failed to provide sufficient protective measures for users with mental illnesses. He is seeking compensation, as well as the implementation of mechanisms to automatically end conversations about self-harm.
OpenAI said it is studying the lawsuit. The company noted that it trains ChatGPT to recognize signs of a mental health crisis, reduce the escalation of such dialogues, and direct users to professional help.

“Without offense”: a caricature showing outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer handing his alleged successor Andy Burnham a grenade without a pin with the caption “Defence funding,” published by The Guardian.
📋 The new head of government will have to tackle the problem of a multi-billion-pound deficit in the defence budget. Burnham himself learned about the “gap” in the defence budget of 4.7 billion pounds sterling (about $6.2 billion) only after the relevant document was published on 30 June.
The document provides for nearly 300 billion pounds in defence spending, but, as the finance minister Rachel Reeves previously said, the source for covering the additional 4.7 billion pounds will be determined only when preparing the autumn budget.
According to Independent, Burnham does not yet know what exactly the future head of government will have to look for to cover this shortfall.
❗️ On 22 June, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he had decided to leave his post. He clarified that he will continue to hold it until a successor is elected. The elections are expected to end by 17 July, and the new prime minister is expected to take office on 20 July.

A California resident has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI: the 34-year-old Michael Laines claims that the ChatGPT chatbot worsened his mental condition, diagnosed as bipolar disorder, and led to a suicide attempt, Reuters reports.
The American said his conversations with the AI shifted from a manic episode into a prolonged delusion. According to the plaintiff, the bot not only confirmed his belief that he was Jesus Christ, but also began to present itself as a deity.
Laines claims that he repeatedly told ChatGPT about his diagnosis and medication regimen, but the bot did not suggest that he seek help—instead, it fueled the user’s unhealthy condition.
The lawsuit emphasizes that OpenAI knew about potential risks for people with mental disorders but did not warn users. The plaintiff is seeking compensation and a court order that would require the developer company to automatically interrupt discussions of self-harm between ChatGPT and a person.
The company is reviewing the lawsuit filed by the Californian.
