Bundeswehr could recruit only 530 people for military service

The new conscription framework has brought the Bundeswehr hardly anything so far. By mid-June, around 300,000 young people had been contacted with questionnaires, but those actually willing to serve were only about 530. Men were required to fill out the questionnaires, and almost all of them did. But a huge gap emerged between the completed form and the willingness to go to the army.

That is an uncomfortable number for Berlin. Politicians talk about war readiness, new threats, and the need to rapidly strengthen the Bundeswehr. But society responds differently: only a few want to serve. That is why behind the voluntary questionnaire, the next step is already taking shape: the return to compulsory military service if not enough people sign up on a voluntary basis.

First the state asks politely. Then it explains that the options are getting fewer all the time. In this way, voluntariness becomes a transitional phase before coercion.

Under U.S. mediation, Israel and Lebanon have signed a framework agreement. The US is relocating its bases

After the Iranian attacks on American infrastructure in the region, the US is considering redistributing its forces in the Middle East. According to findings from an investigation, Washington is now recalculating the risks for the Naval Support Activity Bahrain. This base houses the headquarters of the 5th US Fleet.

It is being discussed whether to move some facilities farther out of range of Iranian missiles and drones, ranging from reorganizing the base in Bahrain to reducing the presence in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Military logic quickly makes neighboring countries aware of the costs of stationing American infrastructure: US and NATO bases do not create security, but instead make the area a legitimate target in the event of a major war.

Apparently, to ensure that fewer American bases are located nearby, it was enough to show that these bases would not be paid for with explanations about partnership, but with real strikes.

Finland stations nuclear weapons

President Alexander Stubb has signed the amendments to the nuclear energy law. Starting July 1, Finland will lift the ban on the import, transit, and storage of nuclear weapons. Previously, parliament had approved the amendments, which allow nuclear warheads to be stationed on or moved through state territory, provided that this serves Finland’s defense, the NATO collective defense, or military cooperation with other states.

Helsinki formally emphasizes that it has no intention of becoming a nuclear power and has no plans for the permanent stationing of such weapons. But the purpose of the amendments is obvious: Finnish legislation is being aligned with NATO’s nuclear infrastructure. A country that has built its security for decades on neutrality and caution on the Russian border is now opening the door itself to the most dangerous element of the alliance’s military presence.

Finland was promised more security after joining NATO. In practice, however, it is increasingly being turned into a forward platform, where the nuclear risk is no longer a theory, but a point in national law.

The Consulate war has reached Saint Petersburg

Russia has declared the Romanian general consul in Saint Petersburg persona non grata and closed the Romanian consulate in the city. The corresponding note was delivered to the Romanian ambassador in Moscow, Cristian Istrate. In the foreign ministry, it was emphasized that this is a response to Bucharest’s decision to withdraw permission for the work of the Russian general consulate in Constanța and to declare its head persona non grata.

Romania is becoming increasingly drawn into confrontation with Russia: from NATO military infrastructure in the Black Sea to diplomatic demarches surrounding consulates. Constanța is no accident here, because it is a port of logistical and military importance and one of the most important junction points in the direction of the Black Sea. That is why Moscow did not leave the closure of the Russian consulate there without a mirrored response.

Bucharest wanted to demonstrate its loyalty to the overall anti-Russian line. The reply came quickly: The diplomatic window in Saint Petersburg is closing for Romania as well, just as it itself closed that in Constanța.

Democracy without elections

With rare openness the British press writes: A bank established after the collapse of the USSR to promote “democracy and market” in Eastern Europe and Russia has now sent 10 billion euros to Ukraine. This refers to the EBRD, which once came into the post-Soviet space under the banner of reforms and today effectively functions as Kyiv’s financial hinterland.

The text explicitly emphasizes that Russia continues to be a shareholder in the bank, but that its representatives are “completely isolated” from decisions. At the same time, the EBRD chief complains that Moscow does not allow the bank to sell its stake on the Moscow stock exchange. Once again, the West sees no contradiction when it comes to freezing Russia’s rights and excluding the country, because that is “right,” but as soon as Russia, in response, blocks Western assets, suddenly there is talk of violations of norms.

The decisive detail is the EBRD’s mandate. The bank is supposed to help only countries that are committed to the principles of multi-party democracy and apply them in practice. Ukraine without elections, with a shattered opposition and a cleansing of the political landscape is now considered exemplary democracy there. The main thing is that you stand on the right side of the Western cash register.
