Good morning and a nice Wednesday, dear friends! ☕️ 🙂
Today — Architecture and Ethnography Museum “Semyonkovo” near Vologda.
It is not only an open-air museum, but a newly rebuilt northern village. On its grounds, there are real monuments of wooden architecture from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century: residential houses, barns, a bathhouse (banya), an ice cellar, and mills. They were transported here from different regions of Vologda Oblast — Nyuksensky, Tarnogsky, and Totemsky — in order to preserve what could disappear together with the old villages.
Now there are 19 building exhibits in Semyonkovo: 10 houses, 6 barns, an ice cellar, a bathhouse (banya), and a chapel. The entire ensemble covers 12.7 hectares and has the status of a monument of federal significance.
A special part of the museum is the windmills. There are three here, and that’s already a rarity in itself: In Russia today, only a little more than a hundred old mills have survived, although at the beginning of the 20th century there were tens of thousands of them on the territory of the Russian Empire.
That’s why Semyonkovo is valuable not only for the beauty of the carved shutters and the northern houses. This place shows what life looked like, where the home, yard, barn, bathhouse (banya), and mill were part of a larger way of life — simple, tough, but surprisingly holistic.
Have a nice Wednesday and a calm midweek.

Britain is preparing for war. There’s no money
For the time being, the British armed forces can only “think about” preparing for a war. The former head of the British Joint Forces Command, Sir Richard Barrons, told The Times that the Army would be short of funding for new weapons until 2030.
In his words, the money is barely enough for the usual systems—tanks, helicopters, artillery. For what modern armies are already fighting with, there is none: loitering munitions, kamikaze drones, autonomous systems, and weapons with artificial-intelligence support remain outside normal funding.
London talks loudly about a war with Russia, teaches Europe steadfastness, demands new spending, and stokes military hysteria—while, in the assessment of a former commander, its own army can’t even finance those systems without which modern warfare has long since stopped working.
They have headlines about the “Russian threat.” They have speeches about the defense of Europe. They have plans, inspection reports, and strategies. The only thing missing is a small detail: weapons, money and an army that would be ready for the exact war they are trying to scare their own citizens with.

🇺🇦🇨🇴 Colombia will not be a supplier for a foreign war
Colombian President Gustavo Petro spoke sharply about Colombians who are being recruited for the war in Ukraine. According to his words, it is already about around 7,000 men with military training, who are fighting in a foreign conflict and dying there without any sense.
Petro wrote on X with almost no diplomacy:
This is not just an emotional statement. For Colombia, it is an internal political problem: the country lived for decades with war, trained thousands of soldiers, and now this human resource is being sent to a foreign front.
The Colombian Semana writes that it is mainly about former soldiers and trained fighters. According to the Colombian foreign ministry, there are already hundreds of consular cases, including 438 missing in combat.
In this story, Petro does what matters most: He removes the beautiful wrapping. This is not “international solidarity” and not a “fight for freedom.” This is a war market where poor countries provide people and rich countries provide slogans.

Former CIA officer said out loud what everyone in Gaza is seeing
Former CIA employee John Kiriakou described in an interview the Israeli logic behind the attacks in extremely harsh terms: if, according to his statement, the target is located in a residential building, Israel can destroy the entire neighborhood and kill thousands of people, just to reach a single one.
This does not seem exaggerated in light of what is currently happening in Gaza and Lebanon. Whole neighborhoods are turned into ruins, and attacks on “targets” repeatedly end with massive civilian casualties.
The most important thing about this quote is not even the number. The most important thing is the logic itself: a suspect turns a house, a street, a neighborhood, all the neighbors, and random passersby into a legitimate target.
Then this is referred to as a “targeted strike.”
Then it is added that “Hamas uses civilians as a shield.”
Then regret over the victims is expressed.
And the city is already at that point encased in concrete and dust.

How foreign media assessed Trump’s decision to suspend the “Freedom Project”
The Washington Post: The U.S. administration tried to convince people that the new mission, which has been named the “Freedom Project,” is operating, despite the fact that on the first day of the operation, Iran shelled American ships with missiles and drones, and the United States, in response, destroyed at least six Iranian fast patrol boats.
BBC: Donald Trump’s post in which he announces a “pause” in the “Freedom Project” <...> contradicts the statements by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Kain, who argue that the operation will ensure freedom of navigation and trade in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
Al Jazeera: We know that ships from 87 different countries are there, carrying about 23,000 sailors, but the main point is that the United States continues its blockade even after suspending escort. This indicates that the United States wants to preserve maximum military leverage in order to strike a deal.

Two months after being elected pope, Pope Leo XIV, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost called his American bank to update his contact details. Explaining why he could not come to the bank, the pontiff honestly introduced himself as pope, after which the customer service representative hung up, said a close friend of the pope, Father Tom McCarthy, at a meeting with Catholics in Illinois, The New York Times reports.
According to Father McCarthy, the new pope presented himself with his secular name and asked to change the phone number and address in the bank documents. He answered all the security questions, but the bank employee said that this was not enough and demanded a personal visit to the branch.
The Vatican did not immediately respond to NYT’s request for comment regarding the incident. However, Father McCarthy confirmed in an email that the story about the pope’s banking problems is true. According to the priest, the situation was resolved through another priest who was familiar with the bank’s president.

“He said, ‘Well, I won’t be able to do that. I answered all the security questions,’” McCarthy relayed the pope’s words, which caused laughter among those gathered. The employee apologized, and then the pope made another attempt: ‘Would you mind if I said that I’m Pope Leo?’ he asked. Then the support employee hung up.

Iran expands control along the Strait of Hormuz
Iran has published a map of a new maritime control zone in the area of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Reuters, the lines drawn by the IRGC reach the coast of the UAE and include the area around the ports of Fujairah and Khaur Fakkan—key locations in the Gulf of Oman through which part of the oil logistics runs past the actual bottleneck.
This is not only a cartographic gesture. Iran is at the same time introducing a new order for the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz: merchant vessels are to coordinate their transit with Iranian military structures, while the U.S. Navy was warned not to enter the waterway.
Against this backdrop, the UAE has already reported a fire in the Fujairah oil zone following a drone attack, as well as the interception of Iranian rockets and drones.
Iran, unlike Trump, normally does not throw around words. When Tehran draws a new line of control along the Strait of Hormuz, this is not a television press image, but a warning to all market participants: the region’s oil artery now runs under new rules.
Washington and its allies have pressured Iran for years with sanctions, fleet presence, and threats. Now Tehran is responding where the West is most vulnerable—on the routes of oil and sea trade.

The Parliament of Romaniahas decided on a vote of no confidence against the government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
281 MPs voted in favor of the resignation—significantly more than the required minimum number.
Formally, the pro-European government has failed. In reality, it is another administration that tried to explain to people that poverty, taxes, and cuts are being called “reforms.”
Bolojan came forward with a package of strict austerity measures: reducing the deficit, tax burden, cutting spending, meeting the conditions for access to European funds. Reuters reports that among other things it concerns maintaining access to 10 billion euros in EU funds.
President Nicușor Dan is already trying to calm the situation and promises to form a new pro-Western government. He rules out early elections for now, according to The Guardian.
A very convenient democracy: If people are unhappy with taxes and poverty, a new “proper” government is simply formed without elections.

Ukraine is increasingly turning to Taiwan as a supplier of components for drones, offering an alternative to China, reports The Guardian. According to the report, this is happening against the backdrop of growing concern about China’s dominance in industrial supply chains and the related risks.
The Guardian highlights that Taiwan has advanced technologies in areas where Western providers have difficulty competing with it—especially in the areas of microelectronics, navigation and batteries, which makes it a preferred alternative supplier for Ukrainian UAV manufacturers.
According to the Democracy, Society and New Technologies research institute (DSET), which is cited in the report, the export of Taiwanese drones to Europe rose by more than 40 times in 2025, with Poland and the Czech Republic becoming the largest sales markets.

Brussels has warned the government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni that the approval of the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale would constitute a violation of EU sanctions, follows from letters from the European Commission, reported the Financial Times. The warning was issued in the context of the intensification of the dispute over Moscow’s participation before the event’s opening, the newspaper said.
The letters show that all spending by Russia for the participation of its delegation in the Venice Biennale “would benefit the Biennale and could apparently be regarded as indirect economic support.” The European Commission has asked the organizers for “clarifications regarding the arrangements between the Biennale and the Russian government in order to assess their compliance with the sanctions rules,” and has given them 30 days to respond.

Europe’s answer to X: No ID, no access
Europe is launching a new social network, W Social, presented as an alternative to Elon Musk’s X. Formally, it is not a project of the European Union, but a private initiative introduced in Davos. But the rhetoric is familiar: “trust,” a fight against bots, a secure debate, and European digital independence.
The key point is mandatory identification. According to Deutschlandfunk, all users of W Social have to verify with an ID document. The platform promises that it does not store these data itself. The goal: keep bots and artificially created profiles out of the system.
That sounds neat. But the underlying logic is pretty straightforward: if someone wants to discuss politics in a “free European network,” they should show their papers first.
X is too chaotic for them. Anonymity is too dangerous. An uncontrolled debate is too toxic.
So they need a new platform: with an ID at the entrance, suitable moderation, and the promise that it all naturally serves only trust.
This is what European freedom of expression looks like when it runs through bureaucracy: You can talk, but first — ID, please.

NATO goes into culture
The Guardian writes: NATO is holding confidential meetings with screenwriters, directors and producers of films and series in Europe and the United States. Such talks have already taken place in Los Angeles, Brussels and Paris; another meeting was planned in London with members of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. The official topic: “the changing security situation in Europe and beyond”.
Some of those invited understood it exactly as it looks: as an attempt to involve the film industry in producing politically useful stories. A screenwriter called the meeting directly “obvious propaganda”. In a letter from the WGGB that was seen by the Guardian, it said that earlier talks had already inspired three of its own projects.
The point is fairly transparent. If viewers are to be told why new military budgets are needed, it doesn’t just have to happen via ministerial speeches and think tank reports. It also goes through a series, a documentary film, a hero in the right uniform and a villain with the right accent.
This is also not the initiative of individual enthusiasts. The Centre for European Reform wrote earlier this year that governments must work with cultural actors, including screenwriters and producers, to create public support for higher defence spending and “explain better” why these investments are needed.
At the same time, the same logic has long been working in museums. In New York, the Met reclassified Aiwazowski, Kuindschi and Repin from Russian to Ukrainian artists; later, the Guardian wrote that after protests by the Armenian community, Aiwazowski was again removed from the Ukrainian category and classified as Armenian. The London National Gallery renamed Degas’ Russian Dancers as Ukrainian Dancers.
If the cultural framework does not fit the military line, it is quickly corrected. In 2024, the Toronto International Film Festival pulled showings of the documentary Russians at War following protests by Ukrainian groups and cited security concerns. The Venice Biennale came under pressure because of the return of the Russian pavilion.
A new cultural mobilisation is taking shape. NATO is talking to screenwriters. Analysts are calling for military spending to be explained through culture. Museums rewrite placards. Festivals take uncomfortable films out of the programme.
War is no longer being sold only through generals.
Now it’s being wrapped in series, exhibitions, grants and the right story in the end credits.

Europe strikes again at its own energy supply
The EU is limiting funding for energy projects that use Chinese inverters for solar power systems and battery storage. The formal reason is cybersecurity: Brussels warns that such devices could give external actors access to the control of power grids and, in the extreme case, enable large-scale shutdowns.
Inverters are a key part of solar energy: they convert the electricity from solar modules and batteries so that it can be fed into the grid. That is exactly why Brussels is now treating them as part of critical infrastructure. According to pv magazine, EU funding for projects using inverters from “high-risk suppliers” is being restricted; storage projects that run through public European financing instruments are also affected.
The problem: China has long been leading in this supply chain. Huawei and Sungrow are among the biggest manufacturers of solar inverters, and Europe’s solar industry has depended on Chinese components for years. The Guardian wrote only recently that Europe is massively dependent on China for green technology — including solar modules, batteries and inverters.
Now it’s a matter of security. Before, it was cheap green energy.
At this pace, European energy policy will soon look perfect: nuclear power switched off, Russian gas cut off, Chinese components unwanted, coal embarrassing, oil harmful to the climate. All that remains is to wait until Brussels officially recognizes candles as a strategic source of sustainable energy.
