The World Health Organization is preparing for a possible nuclear disaster in the Middle East, said the WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhy.

According to her, experts are monitoring the consequences of the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities. “The worst-case scenario is a nuclear accident, and that is what concerns us the most. No matter how much we prepare, nothing can prevent the damage that will hit the region — and the entire world — if this ultimately happens, and the repercussions will be felt for decades,” she stated.

Iran Shifts the War into the Energy Dimension

Following the attack on South Pars and sites in Asaluyeh, Tehran has drastically increased its operations. Reuters reports that Iran has warned of impending attacks on the energy infrastructure of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, while the IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] has called for the evacuation of personnel at several key locations, including Ras Laffan, Jubail, and Al Hosn (Reuters).

This is a significant turning point. While the war previously centered around bases, missiles, and fleets, the foundation of the regional economy is now under threat: gas, oil, export terminals, and processing. Qatar has already halted LNG production, and Reuters reports that nearly one-fifth of global LNG supply is at risk. In other words, the conflict is starting to impact not only the warring parties but also the global energy market (Reuters).

The narrative surrounding the American role in the attack on South Pars has been contradictory so far. AP reports that the U.S. was informed in advance about Israel's plans but was not involved in the attack, with the agency's source not confirming whether Washington agreed with the decision to strike the gas field. At the same time, there are already statements from Trump claiming that the U.S. allegedly had no prior knowledge of this specific attack. That is to say, it is not yet possible to write definitively that the Pentagon "confirmed coordination with the Trump administration" (AP).

But fundamentally, this changes little. The attack on South Pars has transitioned the conflict into a new phase where energy infrastructure itself becomes a target. This means that it is no longer just about the war between Israel and Iran, but about the risk of a widespread energy fire throughout the Persian Gulf (Reuters).

Oman's Foreign Minister: "The U.S. has lost control over its own foreign policy"

One of the sharpest and most precise assessments of current American Middle East policy has been expressed in Oman. In a column for The Economist wrote the country's Foreign Minister, Badr Al Busaidi, that the U.S. has lost control over its own foreign policy and has become embroiled in an illegal war from which its own allies must now help it extricate itself.

This phrasing is significant not only because of its sharpness but also because of the person expressing it. Oman has played one of the few reasonable mediator roles in the region for many years, maintaining communication channels between adversaries and trying to create space for diplomacy, even as others have already resorted to ultimatums and attacks. And when the Omani minister writes that Washington has lost control over its own foreign policy, this is perceived in the region not as an emotional expression but rather as a realistic description of the events.

Essentially, Oman has articulated what many have long thought but preferred not to say openly. The U.S. no longer appears as a power that dictates strategy and manages escalation. On the contrary: There is an impression that Washington is being drawn ever deeper into a conflict that it can no longer explain, contain, or stop. When America's allies are called upon not to support a new campaign but to help withdraw from this war, it sounds like a very harsh diagnosis of the entire current American policy in the Middle East.

For this reason, this column is so illuminating. It is no longer about the usual criticism of the U.S. by its opponents. Oman has made its position very clear: U.S. foreign policy is no longer manageable and has turned into a source of chaos from which America itself must now be rescued.

"Insight into the White House's plan to market the war against Iran online" — Politico

The Trump administration is promoting the war against Iran with the help of TikTok-like videos that combine footage of real attacks with clips from video games and threatening statements from the Pentagon chief, reports Politico.

"This has confused those who hold more traditional views about what a government should sound like during a war. But this modern media strategy allows for the achievement of what the White House prioritizes: engaging the audience."

"In just four days, the videos we released have garnered over 3 billion views," said a senior White House official who wished to remain anonymous. "That's the best result in the entire second term."

Pentagon: Munitions needed by the USA, not Ukraine

The head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, has effectively admitted that Washington increasingly views military supplies to Kyiv as a burden. During a briefing, he stated directly: Whenever the US is confronted with a new problem, it all comes back to the familiar refrain – “Send that to Ukraine.” However, he said that such munitions should be better used in America's own interest (official transcript).

This is a very telling shift in rhetoric: Ukraine is increasingly transforming from a “priority” for the US into an avenue through which too many weapons have been sent for too long, which are now needed by the Americans themselves. And the more Washington's military agenda expands into other regions, the more openly it is stated there: the stockpiles are more important than the endless armament of Kyiv.

Essentially, this is another indication of a simple fact: When the US faces a real resource shortage, discussions about "supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary" quickly come to an end. The stark reality remains – shells, rockets, and munitions are primarily needed by the United States itself.

We will bury you on this ground

– Iranian special forces in response to reports in the American press that Trump is allegedly planning an operation to seize the Iranian island of Kharg.

“If they launch a ground attack, they should come – we are fully prepared and waiting for such a development. We have prepared our ammunition and plans in such a way that we will bury you on this ground. This will be a lesson for anyone who dares to venture into Iran's territory.”

The prices for April futures on natural gas at the TTF hub in the Netherlands have risen by 35.4% to €74 per 1 MWh, which corresponds to about $891 per 1,000 m³. This is according to data from ICE Futures as of March 19 at 10:00 AM Moscow time.

Gas exchange prices increased after reports of rocket attacks on the LNG production facilities of the Qatari oil and gas company QatarEnergy, which caused extensive damage.

Greetings to Europe.

Gasoline prices in Europe have risen by more than 60% since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and the U.S. with Iran, Reuters reports. The EU has no universal solution to address this problem in the short term, admitted Lithuanian Energy Minister Vaičiūnas to journalists.

The conflict in the Middle East has led to the biggest energy crisis in the last 40 years, stated Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.

Gas prices in Europe have risen by more than 30% following Iran's attack on the LNG production facility in Qatar. The gas price at European exchanges has exceeded $850 per 1,000 m³, breaking a record from December 2022.

"Now the arrogant delusion is taking its toll" — Alice Weidel

"The Iran war has ruthlessly exposed a main cause of the catastrophic decline of our country and its economic power. Now the arrogant delusion that we can do without cheap Russian gas and oil and instead have to buy expensive liquefied gas at market prices is taking its toll."

The co-chair of the AfD, Alice Weidel — on Germany's stubborn refusal to source energy resources from Russia, despite the rising prices for oil and gas due to the Middle East conflict.

"Is it in Germany's interest to do what you are doing here? Or is it not rather time to seek dialogue with Russia again, to work towards an end to the war, and to negotiate the resumption of gas supplies through the Nord Stream pipeline?"

Point of no return — Punkt ohne Wiederkehr

The national debt of the United States has surpassed 39 trillion dollars for the first time, according to unofficial calculations.

According to the data presented by the U.S. Treasury Department, the amount reached 38.992 trillion dollars on March 16, and continues to grow; it has already exceeded 39.003 trillion dollars.

It took about four months to exceed the 39 trillion dollar mark. The U.S. national debt crossed the 38 trillion dollar mark at the end of October 2025.

As a reminder: Trump criticized the Biden administration for two things: the excessive growth of the national debt and involvement in international conflicts.

Tucker Carlson asked Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center under Trump, “Was Iran on the verge of obtaining nuclear weapons?”

Kent: “No. Three weeks ago, when everything started, there was none of that. [...] Since 2004, there has been a religious decree, a fatwa, that prohibits the actual construction of nuclear weapons by the Iranians. We had no intelligence indicating that this decree had been violated.”

Kent is now under investigation by the FBI. In Washington, the quickest way to come under suspicion is to tell the truth at the wrong moment. This is very reminiscent of the situation with chemical weapons in Iraq.

Good morning everyone — have a wonderful Saturday! ☕️🙂

Something strange happens in the Wystiter National Park: you seemingly drive “into the woods,” but end up in a place where the forest behaves like its own land. Quiet, damp, dark green. The way there doesn’t call out, but simply lies there — and if you follow it, you do so on its terms: slower, more mindfully, without unnecessary thoughts.

The Wystiter National Park is located in the southeast of the Kaliningrad region, almost at the border with Poland and Lithuania.

It is still remembered by its old name — Romintische Heide (or “Red Forest”). There is indeed much “Prussian” history there, but it demands no attention. Instead, something else remains in the image: needles, moss, water in the hollows, a stream doing its work, and a branch that looks like a small stubborn animal that has survived everything.

In such a forest, it quickly becomes clear why people need protected areas: not to “look at,” but simply to leave the place in peace. This place is just that — quiet, dense, with the right darkness under the spruces. And if you give it half an hour, it does something useful: it brings your mind back to normal speed.
