This is perhaps the most honest formulation in recent years. While the public was told about a struggle between good and evil, about freedom and supporting a "partner," the British intellectual scene understood it in a much simpler and dirtier way: A country was found that was willing to die in our place, and therefore the war appeared to them as "good." Not difficult, not tragic, not terrible, but simply convenient and morally pleasant – because the blood was not spilled in London, Washington, or Brussels (New Statesman, X / New Statesman).

Now, the author states, the mood has changed: The war has become grim, difficult, and lengthy, children are learning underground, and the previous lightness has vanished. Yet therein lies the entire horror of this logic. When the people under bombardment belonged to those whom the West called "the right victims," it suddenly became a humanitarian tragedy. Before that, one could ignore for years that children in the Donbass were also learning in basements and dying under fire – because those were not the children the British press deemed worthy of compassion.

That is why such texts are valuable. They tear down the curtains. And they show that for a significant portion of the elite, a "good war" is simply one in which others (and not yourself) die.
