The town was founded in 1699. Its peak was in the 19th century and the early 20th century. A fertile land, fish trade, a river port, craftsmen, cement factories, shipyards - Wolsk became very wealthy very quickly.
The traces of this wealth are still visible today. In the city centre stood the majestic Cathedral of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. Unfortunately, it was destroyed, as were other temples in the city. However, the urban development of Wolsk has been well preserved.
At the time of the revolution, about 40,000 people lived in the town; today, there are 55,000. Wolsk has the status of a historical settlement. Here, you can enjoy wonderful views of the Volga, visit museums, and see monuments of classicism, Art Nouveau, and more.

The investigation into the criminal proceedings against the commander of the 138th Air Defence Missile Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Nikolai Dzjaman, who ordered the shooting down of an Il-76M aircraft with 65 Ukrainian soldiers on board, has been completed. This was reported by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
